Shapps says people can start thinking about summer hols abroad and that the cost of the covid test needs to be driven down. Anyone else as excited as me?

@comingintomyown

A word of warning I booked to travel to visit my Mum in France and have subsequently discovered at the moment you are legally required to buy the government travel COVID package and what I was reading this is £520 per person which puts it out of reach , I don’t feel this has been well publicised unless it’s just me !
Is it tests? I haven’t heard that term either
osbertthesyrianhamster · 09/04/2021 17:57

Fab! Got tickets to see family in July.

abricotine · 09/04/2021 18:00

There have been articles in the news this afternoon how the government is saying the price of tests is unacceptable and has to come down. They are half the price overseas in the EU.

abricotine · 09/04/2021 18:01

Definitely a YANBU from me OP

@ChristmasFluff

It seems like the entire world (except Australia and New Zealand) is deliberately refusing to see how the virus became a worldwide problem due to air (and other) travel.

This really should be a wake-up call that the way we lived previously is not conducive to the survival of the human species - not just because of vaccines, but because of climate change. But no.

Safety is being sacrificed to corporate finance. And I am by no means opposed to opening up business - but mass travel isn't sensible until/if this virus is controlled.

If those places are so great then why not emigrate to one of them? Personally, I can't think of any place I'd like to live in less than either of those places, although plenty of people seem to love them, good, more for them. I personally can't wait to travel to see family abroad. Safety is an illusion, and money makes the world go round. The virus is here to stay. That's life, time to get back to living it.

The collective noun there is a "cheeky fucker" of tests.

Sorry if this sounds sarcastic, I don't mean it to.

I am genuinely interested in knowing how you were planning to get the tests done other than this way.

Thank you in advance!!

Shapps is lying crook, so I won't taking anything he says seriously ever.

MaryShelley1818 · 09/04/2021 19:30

I can't wait to go away....we've booked Menorca for September (can be changed if needed) and I'm cautiously optimistic.

We've also got a few UK breaks booked too. 3 holidays cancelled last year and definitely ready to travel again if it's deemed safe to do so.

Parky04 · 09/04/2021 19:33

Can't be arsed to go abroad this year. Will spend a week in the Lake District. Will consider abroad next year.

QuentininQuarantino · 09/04/2021 19:35

Oh god yes!! I want to hug my mum and dad meet my (no longer a baby) nephew and my new sister in law!

PradaBallbag · 09/04/2021 19:36

Given Jet2 have just cancelled my late June holiday, I can't say I'm excited! He needs to put his money where his mouth is and outline exactly when foreign travel can happen, and under what terms. Too many mixed messages from and government.

StarCat2020 · 09/04/2021 19:39

Another issue is that Boris can "allow" UK citizens to go abroad but other countries don't have to let UK citizens in.

Spain (for example) is still not allowing most non-EU citizens to enter -

MrsJBaptiste · 09/04/2021 19:42

DH works for one of the main holiday airlines and TBH, they're thinking more of pushing winter holidays rather than focussing on summer 2021.

It's shit for holidaymakers and those in travel industry. We'd just rather know and have some definite information as to how this summer will pan out.

MarshaBradyo · 09/04/2021 19:43

If it’s £520 per person (?)

That will be a disincentive for families

coconutmonkey · 09/04/2021 20:15

Luckily I don't live my life waiting to be told what I'm allowed to think about using my own brain 😂. Sorry if that sounds unkind, I just think it's high time that we stopped being told what and when to think!

AnneElliott · 09/04/2021 20:16

Not planning to go abroad this year - our holiday to Canada has been moved to 2022.

I'd like to go to Belfast but will have to see if the situation calms down by the summer.

EasterIssland · 09/04/2021 20:17

Start? I’ve been thinking about it for a lonf time !

EasterIssland · 09/04/2021 20:18

Regarding tests they were saying that they want to reduce the price of the pcrs as much as possible so it won’t be as expensive as some posters have seen as of today

EasterIssland · 09/04/2021 20:23

Mr Shapps said the use of PCR tests - those needing to be sent to a lab - enabled scientists to detect potential variants of concern.

But he said he was "concerned" about the cost of the tests, adding that the government was committed to driving down the price of these by working with the private sector.

The transport secretary also said the government was looking at the possibility of people bringing pre-departure tests with them that they can use before boarding their return flight, pointing out that people are now able to order free lateral flow tests.

carolinesbaby · 09/04/2021 20:50

The money puts me off. If I have to pay for 4/5 tests each for a family of 4, at up to £150 a time, that's going to more than double the price of our holiday and put it out of reach.

AdriannaP · 09/04/2021 21:05

I don’t understand why the tests have to be so expensive. They are 30/40€ in Europe.

VictoriaLudorum · 09/04/2021 21:12

Please do not come to Europe. We don't want or need you here and you have rejected us anyway.
Drunks - head straight to Dubai ;-)
