Easter holiday term dates? Ours are ridiculous

Our Easter holidays are ridiculously long. I know other private schools have shortened theirs given the amount of school kids have missed. Could I do a quick poll of dates? Ours are Thursday 25th March-Wednesday 21st April. I think school should take them back a week earlier. When do your kids go back?

MyDcAreMarvel I’m a lone parent, I’m always with my children, sorry but after 2 weeks with no break I get exhausted and end up itchy for them to go back, I have 4 under 10 and oldest has autism and is very challenging One week would be enough for me. But then I think the 6 week holidays are too long as well, wasn’t expecting judgement!

I work at an Independent school, we moved our hols start date from 26th March to 1st April shortening them from three to two weeks. This was because of all the time the students missed actually being in school over Lockdown. It was a very popular decision with staff, students and parents all supportive.

The long holidays is one of the ticks in the cons column of private schooling for me.

We struggle to take holidays around school holiday time due to the nature of our business, and the idea of having my children off over easter for almost a month is not appealing.

I think people are finding it especially challenging without the option of foreign travel and so few activities available.

Private prep, broke up on 1st April, back on 20th. Very short by private standards and not adjusted due to COVID. I’m happy as less time to sort out childcare for, but I know we’ll have a longer holiday somewhere to make up for it. I haven’t counted how many weeks they are off in summer yet!

That does sound long, but logistically it must be difficult for schools to shorten the holidays. It would only take a couple of teachers not being able to accommodate it for the whole school to be unable to accommodate it. In theory, your dc shouldn’t have missed any school because the school have provided online learning, so teachers and children have still been working for the same amount of time as they would be normally.

Easter is my favourite school holiday - half terms feel too short, summer holidays feel long. Two weeks is just perfect!

Both DS's broke up on the 1st and go back on the 19th

Choosing private school and then being surprised or irritated that they have long holidays is bizarre!

If you want shorter holidays, choose a state school-they have 2 weeks at Easter and have done for many years

1st to 19th here - state.

Local private school is the same.

DD is private, and has LESS holiday than me in state! She broke up three school days before me, but goes back a week earlier.

DDs are at a free school. It's always 2 weeks at Easter, 3 at Christmas but they shortened last Christmas to 2 weeks and have given us an extra week this summer, making it an 8 week break.

2 weeks for Easter is fine. It's a week for 1/2 term.

Wow I didn’t realise private schools had such a long Easter. Does this mean they have less time at Summer?

Not usually, no, their summer holidays tend to be longer too. But in my experience private schools tend to have longer school days on average

26th to 21st a couple of inset days lobbed on at the end.

Suits us. Private schools, DC worked very hard during lockdown and they were exhausted by the Easter holidays.

My DDs indy broke at lunchtime on 1/4 and goes back on 20th. Looks like shorter than some state schools!

I went to private and had 4 weeks at Easter and Christmas and 8 in the summer. Half terms were always a week. We did longer school days and Saturday mornings which probably made up for these extra weeks.

I had classmates from all over the world including East Asia, Australia etc. I assume the long holidays were to give them the opportunity to go home.

That would make sense if their days are longer.
