Had to dash to the shops. 15yo DD came with me.

I needed deodorant and I like to use the stick kind. The shop we went to had just the spray which I can't use or the roll on stuff that always feels gross and wet to me.

My DD could see me getting frustrated and shrugged and said "Mum, just get the men's stick one. It's bigger and there's no pink tax so it's cheaper too"

I genuinely thought the kid never listens to me waxing lyrical about these things, but clearly something has gone in!!
Maybe there is hope after all...

(turns out the mens one is way better tbh)

Wait what is pink tax?

Overdueanamechange · 09/04/2021 10:57

Go girl!!

KihoBebiluPute · 09/04/2021 11:00

@HOkieCOkie she was referring to the way that items marketed as "for women" are often priced just a little higher than the same article that is marketed "for men"

Go girl!!
I wanted to high5 her in the shop but she would have died of embarrassment at how cringe I am so I restrained myself. But yeah, she is kind of awesome

Brilliant! My DD 14 and I get along great but she does look incredibly bored when I give her my hard earned life tips. A few times now I have overheard her speak to friends using exactly my words on the subject (without referencing me). I mean word for word, I was completely astonished the first time. There is hope!

Yeah like with the deodorant. The one I used to use was marketed towards ladies and was £2.50 for 40ml. The one I bought that day was £1.99 for 50ml. The feminine version of the brand I bought for men is £3.50 for 40ml. Pink tax

I always thought men's stuff was more expensive. Men's clothing and gifts always seems far more pricey than mine.

CrazySheepLady · 09/04/2021 11:07

You've taught her well! And, yes, IMO men's anti-perspirants usually are better.

TwoTypesOfStock · 09/04/2021 11:14

Your DD is right. It always baffles me why women buy ‘women’s’ shaving razors when men’s are far superior.

MajorMujer · 09/04/2021 11:17

Good on your DD.
Mine is early 20's now but I remember fondly her righteous indignation at the Bic Lady Pens Grin

the reviews on amazon were funny though

Pink tax is paying a premium for pink, or more specifically products aimed at women when the "male" version works just as well e.g. deodorant or razors.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 09/04/2021 11:26

Men's clothing can be comparatively more expensive but that's because there is less fast fashion for men (designed to be sold in volume for less money) and also because men's clothing often uses better quality material. So higher gsm cotton that lasts longer, for example.

Have you not noticed women’s products are more expensive than the male equivalent. Ie, shaving products, deodorants.

Wait - you mean they get better quality clothing too? I know there must be a reason why I buy men's t-shirts, even though they do fit a bit funny.
Macncheeseballs · 09/04/2021 12:57

My kids know about pink tax through stuff they watch online

redheadwitch · 09/04/2021 13:04

Yep, I always buy men's shaving gel. A wider range available for men, starting at Tesco Value for £1. Whereas, women's options are all branded stuff for around £3+

sashh · 09/04/2021 13:16

Wait what is pink tax?

Just about everything designed to be sold to women costs more than that marketed to men.

It happens with everything from deodorant, to spectacle frames via cleansers and just about everything else.

It happens to a lesser extent with cosmetic v baby products, cotton buds and cotton wool are often cheaper in the baby isle then the cosmetics isle.

Crunchymum · 09/04/2021 13:20

What is a deodorant stick, if not a roll on?

minisoksmakehardwork · 09/04/2021 13:21

@Crunchymum - there's the 'cream' stick deodorants as well.

If I'm shopping in Aldi I buy their shaving gel ,under a £1 and their mens razors are good as well .
HOkieCOkie · 09/04/2021 13:38

@pepsicolagirl that’s crazy I never noticed that before! Good for her!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/04/2021 13:49

Men’s and boy’s clothes are always thicker and warmer: e.g. Boy’s t-shirts compared to girls from the same brand are likely to be made of thicker, better quality cotton. Apparently girls don’t need to be warm and only require flimsy clothes.
