Had to dash to the shops. 15yo DD came with me.

I needed deodorant and I like to use the stick kind. The shop we went to had just the spray which I can't use or the roll on stuff that always feels gross and wet to me.

My DD could see me getting frustrated and shrugged and said "Mum, just get the men's stick one. It's bigger and there's no pink tax so it's cheaper too"

I genuinely thought the kid never listens to me waxing lyrical about these things, but clearly something has gone in!!
Maybe there is hope after all...

(turns out the mens one is way better tbh)

A couple of years ago a friend’s tween daughter asked if I could go shopping for make-up with her with her birthday money and I was a bit confused - I’m an old punk/metalhead and don’t wear much make-up these days and any expertise I could claim is theatrical make-up - but she’d apparently remembered me saying make-up can just be like colouring in on your face, it should be fun. I introduced her to Barry M and we had a blast.

Ponoka7 · 09/04/2021 14:09

"Apparently girls don’t need to be warm and only require flimsy clothes."

Women's clothes are exactly the same. Shirts/dresses without sleeves and decent looking cardis are expensive. I'm only 5'2" so can't buy men's versions. The difference in quality of cargo pants for camping used to do my head in.

pepsicolagirl · 09/04/2021 14:15

Case in point is school trousers. DD has insisted on mens trousers (she is tall) since starting secondary school. Unlike girls trousers they fit nicely without being tight, they are thicker material and they have pockets!!

I have 4 boys so haven't bought any women's deodorant etc for about 10 years when I realised pink tax. Really annoying though

celiafforcandle · 09/04/2021 14:36

@steff13, don't you mean: Where's Wally?

Gosh that was years ago, a friend's boy was obsessed!

HelloCanYouHearMe · 09/04/2021 14:41

@Respectmyauthoritah

I always thought men's stuff was more expensive. Men's clothing and gifts always seems far more pricey than mine.
I've always found mens clothes to be comparitable in price, if not a little cheaper and of much better quality
PinkiOcelot · 09/04/2021 14:47

🤣🤣 good on her!
You see, when you think they’re not listening, they are! Sometimes!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/04/2021 14:48

And women's things are frequently not fit for purpose. Children's swimwear that gives you non-sunburned boys and sunburned girls. Board shorts that men men can surf but women can only sit on the beach.

It makes me so angry. I mean I just buy the boys and men's stuff but really!

ChristmasFluff · 09/04/2021 14:57

Totally agree - noticed the men's deodorant stick thing ages ago, as I too am a stick person.

Also jeans. I have a slender pelvis and wide waist, so always have bought men's jeans - way better value than jeans shaped for women.

If you've been waxing lyrical about it in front of her, how come you were looking at the ladies ones?

It's pockets we talk about in our house, although ds would like to point out his games shorts do not have pockets in either.

sanfranfibber · 09/04/2021 15:09

I'm a big believer that all health and beauty 'issues' have been sold but the products not marketed to women. Otherwise how would they get us to spend more and more money?

As an example, Men's nivea aftershave balm is both the perfect post shave soother for your bits and an excellent foundation primer...

I asked myself the same thing. I blame society and a lack of sleep

I have, for years, bought men's "leisure wear", as they're better quality so jogging bottoms (I need a long leg), hoodies and jackets (especially wax jackets which I find roomier and better priced than the women's), men's fleece-lined beanie hats are thicker and cheaper than women's, men's polo shirts and packs of socks, basic sweaters etc.

Smaller sized men's shorts - better quality fabrics, longer and generally better fitted, cheaper and with proper, deep pockets! The only things I can't wear (I've had to give up) are men's trousers as I'm just the wrong shape. 🌹

The history of pockets in women's clothing shows how attitudes to women have changed, the suffragettes were well known for their pockets in clothes.

I play golf (don't shoot me!) and you would not believe the difference in price for men's and women's clothing. Plus, even in a proper sports shop, there's so little choice for 'the lady golfer'.

So I buy men's polo shirts (their small is equivalent to a women's medium) and men's trousers, which is a revelation. Disclaimer, I am an inverted V body type and have a thicker waist and narrow hips.
They have deeper pockets, more choice, longer length. Why do manufacturers think that all women who play sport are 5 feet 2 and only wear pink?

KizzyWayfarer · 10/04/2021 08:51

Whenever I see the advice to ‘never wear a white bra under a white top, always wear nude’ I think how successfully we have been conned to blame women for wearing the wrong bra, not manufacturers for selling us thin, see-through clothes.
I mean, tops you have to wear a vest underneath for decency, what’s that about?

I don't know about there, but here in the US it was Where's Waldo.

Aprilx · 11/04/2021 07:50

I have just looked up my brand of deodorant which does different versions for men and women and different styles (i.e. a roll on, a stick, a spray etc), the price per ml for each version is identical. I have also looked up razors and too many options to really look at, but on the face of it, the pricing seems pretty much the same too. This is on boots.com

‘‘I genuinely thought the kid never listens to me waxing lyrical about these things, but clearly something has gone in!!

I’d have expected the younger generation to be more tuned in to pink tax to be honest, like you said yourself you were browsing the female section til your daughter pointed out to you the male version would likely be cheaper.

I rely on DD to remind me to not default to the pink section in supermarkets and pharmacies.

Oneeyeopen · 11/04/2021 12:18

Another example is Canesten cream for athletes foot is a third of the price of canesten for thrush.
It is a weaker strength tbf but for a mild case I've found it to work just fine.

Sparklingbrook · 11/04/2021 12:29

I always wonder about those stick deodorants and how you apply them with any sort of effectiveness. Especially anyone who has underarm hair.
I'm a spray person and we just have communal spray it's the Loreal men's one at the moment, must have been on offer somewhere because it's usually v expensive.
