To buy my 3 year old a double bed

We’re moving DS to a bigger room in the house and I was wondering if I would be unreasonable to buy him a double bed. My reasoning is that if he needs me in the middle of the night it would be easier for me to slip in and out of his big bed rather than bring him into mine and disturb DP, the room can fit a double comfortably and he’s going to want one when he’s older anyway. DP isn’t sold on the idea.

My nephew was bought a double at roughly same age. He really struggled to feel secure in it, too much space. Parents ended up selling it and buying a single.

Mine has had a double bed since 4. There's plenty of room to snuggle in and read stories and mine sleeps diagonally.

NameChange30 · 08/04/2021 12:55

DS (4) has a single bed with a pull-out trundle bed underneath, for sleepovers and in case DH or I need to sleep in his room for whatever reason (we haven't needed to yet). It's the best solution for us, he has the floor space in his room but we have the option of another person sleeping there if needed.

I can understand getting a double if you cosleep regularly or if you want to use it for guests sometimes, but we don't.

NameChange30 · 08/04/2021 12:56

Oh and just to add, for reading stories we just cuddle up in my bed, or sit on his bed together.

MsScoot · 08/04/2021 12:56

@AntsInPenzance are you being sarcastic? If not, I am very jealous of your daughters room and would like it for myself

Mummaofboys93 · 08/04/2021 12:57

My eldest went from a toddler bed to a double bed at 3. He absolutely loved it & I found he slept so much better. Sadly for him he's had to downsize since his brother came along bit he didn't mind too much. If you have the room I dint see why not!

honeylulu · 08/04/2021 13:00

Our youngest had the former spare room when she was born which had a double bed. If she was having a bad night I'd scoop her out of the cot and get in the big bed with her.

When we moved house that double became the spare again and youngest had a bunk bed which was much more of a pain if she had a bad night. A couple of times I took her into the spare double room with me anyway.

Eldest has had a double since he was 12. Apparently "everyone" does. Hmmm. But we have the space so I'm fine with it.

dalrympy · 08/04/2021 13:27

Yep. Mine had a 4ft double. Perfect for sleepovers when they get older and for guests if needed.

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 08/04/2021 13:28

All our kids are in doubles. They've been in them from very early on. It's handy if we have guests to stay as one kid will vacate their room which is no skin off their nose as they're always sharing each others beds anyway (DS 9, DD11 and DD14 are always up for a sleepover as they get on so well). It's also very handy for sleepovers. DD14 regularly had up to 5 lasses over for sleepovers and there was loads of room in the two doubles.

If it fits, why not? I do find this assumption that all children will need double beds when older odd though, I'm only 30 and neither me nor my younger siblings, nor my DH nor his younger siblings, had double beds until we left university and got our own places. And we certainly had a big enough house and enough money to have done this.

We were perfectly comfortable in singles until 18 and in the uni holidays. None of us had long-term partners at that age to be fair, but if we had, some of us had a second spare single bed in our room, or I guess once our parents were comfortable with the idea maybe we would have switched to a double.

They don't need one of course but it is nice if you have the space

Is it? My parents had the space but I honestly never wanted a big bed, i wanted the floor space so much more, for playing!

MrsKoala · 08/04/2021 15:12

It works for us. All rooms here have king/super king beds and we co sleep in whichever one we want. Our rooms are big with fireplaces etc so it doesn’t impact on playing space.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 08/04/2021 15:27

Baffled by people saying they were cramped in a single bed as a teen. Do you mean a 2ft 6 bed?

No. I mean a full-sized single. I found it cramped and uncomfortable, especially when I got older and wanted to read, sit on my laptop or study in my bed.

Derrymum123 · 08/04/2021 15:36

Brilliant idea. So much easier to get out of after they have fallen back to sleep. Go for it if the space aspect isn't a problem.

PippinStar · 08/04/2021 15:40

Mine has been in a double since 22 months, and my 6 month old will go into one from the cot too when the time comes. He loves it, it’s great for when he wakes during the night. Not sure how it makes a difference changing single wet / sick sheets vs double ones?? And yes, you can get double bedding with diggers and tractors and everything else on them!

Laiste · 08/04/2021 15:41

Yep, we did the same. DD in double at 2 and a half yo.

Just be aware that it's hard to find children/baby pattered bedding in double size. We just get DD chinzy flowers for hers.

LysistrataVickers · 08/04/2021 15:41

I would. If I had the space and cash I would buy both mine (4 and 7) a double bed. They'll get one eventually anyway.

SeasonFinale · 08/04/2021 15:44

@Dddccc

A 3 yeah old does not need a double bed for any reason
Well it would appear that this 3 year old sometimes still has their mum sleep in with them too, so apparently they do need a double bed for this reason.
Crispyturtle · 08/04/2021 16:00

Yes absolutely do it!! Both of ours went straight from cot to double bed, so much easier in the night if they wake I just get in with them and we both go straight back to sleep. I could not be doing with lying cramped up in a single bed with my arse sticking out of the duvet waiting for a kid to go back to sleep.

I was replying to post about when kids are older so probably wouldn't need space for playing then
NewYearNewOldMe · 08/04/2021 16:25

Do it. I bought my then 9m old a double bed and it was the best decision I've ever made as a parent. Easy for me to slip in and out of. He's 2.5 now and mostly sttn but when he's Ill or whatever is great to be able to get in with him for a cuddle.

Dd has a couple of sets from this brand and they're really nice. I also got her a frozen 2 set in double sized that's a different brand from amazon which is fine but the fabric is cut in an awkward place. She loves it though.

I know. I’ve been searching for a Disney princess themed king size duvet for ages. The only ones I can find are £65 from China. In the end I’ve found something with generic pink and purple butterflies on.

I have found mine craft themed bedding easier to get - I assume they think adults play it too maybe.
