And to think I actually used to like him.

I find this jarring

'The Queen publicly said that women in Britain are raped because of the way they dress or behave'

I'm no royalist but the Queen has lived through an awful lot of stuff and has had to talk to all sorts of wankers over the years

I always like the story about her taking the Saudi guy for a drive Grin

She's a woman. She has daughters. She was s truck driver and mechanic in ww2. She gave the boss of Saudi a massive fuck you.

I'm sure she has lots of dodgy opinions. And as I say, I'm no royalist. But it seems really peculiar to raise her in conversation.

The problem is men. Men all over the world, of all religions and races and everything. Men. They are the ones doing the raping.

UrbanRambler · 09/04/2021 01:59

@NiceGerbil Just because we have our own problems with rape and abuse of women in the UK, it doesn't mean that IK's comments should go unchallenged. Surely it's good that people in powerful positions face criticism if they make misogynistic comments, regardless of what religion they are?

NiceGerbil · 09/04/2021 02:04

'That is what would never happen in the UK, as the national government is secular. As well as the fact that rape is actually a crime in the UK.'

Rape is illegal in Pakistan

'Rape is a criminal offence in Pakistan. Punishment for rape in Pakistan under the Pakistani laws is either death penalty or imprisonment of between ten and twenty-five years. For cases related to gang rape, the punishment is either death penalty or life imprisonment.[1] DNA test and other scientific evidence are used in prosecuting rape cases in Pakistan'

'In 2019, Government of Pakistan established more than 1,000 special courts across the country. These special courts would focus only on addressing the issues related to violence against women in Pakistan. The establishment of special courts were hailed by many human right organizations.'

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_in_Pakistan

This discussion is worth having and should be had. For him to say this is appalling. The question was about children too.

But it's useless if the conversation gets diverted to inaccurate information, and an assumption that 'they' are doing so much worse than 'us'.

Coyoacan · 09/04/2021 02:08

I don't trust international media anymore after having seen how the Mexican president is misrepresented either through ignorance or stupidity.

PurpleRainDancer · 09/04/2021 02:16

Hypocrisy of the highest order, shame on him.

Feckfeckfeck123 · 09/04/2021 02:19

In September a French citizen was raped in rural Pakistan when her car ran out of petrol at night on a deserted stretch in the middle of nowhere. Last month her two attackers were sentenced to death. At the time a policeman publicly questioned why she was alone and this led to mass protests, by both men and women. I'm pretty sure there will be protests happening at IK's recent gem but may not necessarily be covered by the media.

I agree Gerbil. One would think this shit doesn't happen here.

NiceGerbil · 09/04/2021 02:23

Of course, urban.

But that's not really happening is it.

Example (picked randomly, there's others)

'I agree, for some reason that region has a very disturbed view of women. I don’t know where this idea stems from (considering they have alternative religions 🤷‍♀️) but there’s an attitude of avoiding the whole issue and sticking with the idea of blaming women. The cultural ideology obviously allows and promotes this belief that women are inferior and will always be the ones in the wrong even if they are the victim.'

Religion etc is irrelevant.

In more overt or subtle ways it's everywhere.

The way that it's to do with while ignoring what people who are near have done. Is just shrugging off a problem by othering.

Yes let's talk about it. Yes let's talk about how his words were awful and what impact they may have.

But let's Not say oh it's a regressive society/ religion. And that's why. It's an easy and pretty dodgy answer.

Pitcairn Islands were Christian.
Donald pussy grabber presented himself as Christian
RC church facilitated CSA globally for decades
Church of England also protected and ignored CSA
Rape convictions are at an all time low
Just a few weeks ago a man who was reported by multiple people including video and car reg, carrying out the sort of sex related crime that should have rung massive alarms. Was. Well I live in a met area. I doubt they gave it a second thought. Then he murdered a woman
Rate of women being murdered at home has gone up during lockdown. Also rates of child abuse including sex abuse.

Yes let's talk about what he said.
But a fair few posters have said oh well. Muslim. What do you expect. Etc.

It's easier to other, but it's wrong. Saying well those men are somehow totally different to these men. Nice idea. Not true.

jessstan2 · 09/04/2021 02:31

That's a fair post, NiceGerbil.

I too do not trust any shade of the media, Coyoacan.

I looked on YouTube to see if the interview with Imran Khan was on there but all I could find was him talking without sound from him (and I can't lip read), with a voiced commentary from someone else (an American).

There is an international outcry about this, including from Pakistan. I'm glad Jemima, with whom he co-parents and remains 'good friends', has spoken out.

NiceGerbil · 09/04/2021 02:41

Two sisters were murdered in a park. Not long ago.
The police weren't interested in the reports they were missing. Even though the family said it was really out of character.
The family went and looked and found the sisters bodies.
They called the police.
The police officers took selfies with the two dead women and sent them to friends in the met.

My personal opinion is that we only know all this, heard about it, that it even got in the news was because (oops met!) their mum was a person who was not a nobody.

'She served as the Archdeacon of Southend in the Diocese of Chelmsford from September 2013 until her retirement on 31 December 2016.[1] She was the Church of England's first female archdeacon from a black and minority ethnic background.'

She had a voice

In England. Police officers failed to do anything. The family, after looking for, if I understand correctly, a few days. Found their bodies.

They called the police

The police took selfies with two women who had been murdered and shared them with police friends

Their names were Nicole Smallman, she was 27, and Bibaa Henry, who was 46.

I wonder on these threads. When it's all ooh those people over there are awful. Do they even read the news.

NiceGerbil · 09/04/2021 02:44

Oh that post took so long I didn't see the replies!

Still.

The sort of. I suppose it's s tribal thing? We good they bad. It's just s way of not facing up to anything. IMO.

Mittens030869 · 09/04/2021 09:47

But even with rape being illegal in Pakistan, how often would women report being raped if it leads to them being shamed by their local communities? Are there any statistics on that? And how many actual convictions and what’s the sentence? Not that we have anything to be proud of in that context, though.

The most gross thing for me is that Kahn defends sexual abusers of girls in this way, too. That was the attitude in churches when I was a child victim as well and sadly it still exists in some churches.

But no public figure would ever say it publicly now. (Although the attitude existed in the police and SS attitude regarding the sexual exploitation in Rotherham.)

toffeebutterpopcorn · 09/04/2021 09:58

Does he also condemn children and males who are raped? What about murder victims - are that also at daily for being too... squishy? Annoying? In the way? Are robbery victims blamed for having something too nice that someone else wanted?
