Entertaining while entertaining?

Another thread just made me wonder...
When you host people for dinner and drinks, do provide some sort of entertainment as well? Or just chats following food and alcohol?

We finally had a postponed Christmas meal over Easter with friends. There may have been a racing sprouts tournament (and snow!).

normalsaline · 08/04/2021 12:52

@GuildfordGal

cringing so hard at the thought of a sing along at the piano Confused

We usually have musical instruments around and often guests will pick up a guitar or something after dinner and we'll have a little music/chat/'singing' with more wine until whenever Grin.

oh noooo it gets worse
Catflapkitkat · 08/04/2021 13:07

terribleg. I think you are pulling out leg.

If you have done a spoons/balloon art after dinner performance for guests and still claim to have friends, I can only the guests are fellow inmates after a canteen supper and you have stepped up because someone has nicked the ping pong bats again

moochingtothepub · 08/04/2021 13:08

???

For adults? Chatting and drinking (well probably in the reverse orderGrin) are the entertainment! Background music which gets whacked up if people are drunk enough to dance. Have a party (yes I know remember those?) pencilled in for late June so best reremember how to host

FizzyPink · 08/04/2021 13:09

Oh god no. My DP is fanatical about Articulate and always suggests getting it out when friends come over. I have to remind him they came over to see us and chat, not to play boardgames

Marmite27 · 08/04/2021 13:10

We’ve been known to get cards against humanity out Hmm

Catflapkitkat · 08/04/2021 13:18

Board games and card games are good ice breakers and can be fun. It's another level to hiring Dave the Magician to come in a pull a couple of pigeons from the sleeve of his jacket.

As to everyone picking up instruments and having a little music/chat/sing only if you are a member of Oasis, a hippy commune or a care home.

terribleg · 08/04/2021 14:33

@Catflapkitkat no-one comes back to my dinner parties 🤔

Catflapkitkat · 08/04/2021 14:36

terribleg. Hahaha. But on the plus side it shows that rehabilitation can work

sweeneytoddsrazor · 08/04/2021 14:48

The men go to one room with drugs and sex workers, and the women crack out the oujia board and talk to the dead Grin

Fatladyslim · 08/04/2021 14:51

We often have games nights with board games of those ones on xbox that you use your phone to answer.

Iveforgotten · 08/04/2021 14:54

Occasionally we’ll get articulate or a quiz game out. Maybe heads up on the phones but vast majority of the time it’s all about the food, drinks and chat.

terribleg · 08/04/2021 15:04

🤣

SwimBaby · 08/04/2021 15:12

We have a few silly and easy board games that often come out after we’ve eaten and had a few drinks. I wasn’t sure about playing a game at first but now think our best evenings have involved an hour or so playing a game.

GuildfordGal · 08/04/2021 15:40

Weird reaction Confused. Is it really so unusual for you to imagine that people might occasionally strum an acoustic guitar of an evening, after dinner and over a few drinks?

Both DH and some of our friends are musicians - it's really pretty normal.

terribleg · 08/04/2021 15:58

It's a little cringy tbf

GuildfordGal · 08/04/2021 16:04

It's a little cringy tbf

Why? Confused Have you never been in a group of friends with wine/beer and a guitar before? What on earth is 'cringy' about it?

terribleg · 08/04/2021 16:12

Yes I have & a family friend likes to sometimes sing after a gathering. I find it cringy, you don't.

Right. Well, vive la différence!

You’re in a tiny minority who doesn’t find this cringe as fuck. That was always the worst bit of a house party- some wanker bringing out the acoustic guitar to play wonderwall
Alreadyinmypyjamas · 08/04/2021 20:08

I generally strip for my guests. It's good for when I want the night to end as the usually leave pretty sharpish.

Yes. I dance for my guests. Whether they want me to or not.

Sometimes DH saws me in half. That always goes down a treat.

But the chainsaw juggling we tried that one time ... well, we don’t talk about that Sad

I think I’ve been to one of your soirées. Cracking night! 🥂🥳

Grin

It's fairly obvious that we're talking about completely different social scenes, people and experiences.

As I said, vive la différence!
