Just seen this on the BBC news website.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56647128
It’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone in motoring speak out publicly against suvs. I pray this is the start of a major backlash and rightly so! Before anyone says..”you’re jealous” as I usually see on these threads, I would just like to say-I could afford one myself but I wouldn’t be seen dead in one!
Also I am only talking about city suvs. In the countryside/farming it’s of course a different matter.

@Macncheeseballs

Indeed I know all about the great reset but individual car ownership is not sustainable in big cities in the future, they are not used most of the time, car share/hire schemes are a much better idea or just get rid of them altogether
^^

If you don’t want the annoying disabled people to “derail” with their annoying assertions re human rights @Macncheeseballs , don’t say shit like this. Wink

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Imagine stopping and hearing ever so faint "oops I did it again" getting closer grin Now that would make people look properly

Jedward or the Cheeky Girls - pedestrians wouldn't go within a mile Grin

Nooooo😂 Or O Zone!

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Somebody started a thread on here a little while ago to mock people who 'self-identify' as disabled - as if you get a government certificate to declare that you are (which you must display in public at all times to justify yourself) and, if you haven't been given one, there's nothing whatsoever wrong with you.
Actually in some countries you do. You just don't display it. Obviously. My father had a card which was a proof of disability so he could get discounts, adjustments and priority. No issue around it. It doesn't have your medical infor on it. Just name, dob, validity and photo. I can't remember if it has an address, I don't think so (that is on our national ID anyway so would be nothing extra).

Oh, I know there are schemes - such as the Blue Badge - but that doesn't cover anything but parking for holders and, of course, that excludes all of the folk who are indeed disabled and physically incapacitated, but don't quite qualify for a BB.

That sounds a good scheme, where your Dad lived/lives, but, sadly, it's still not going to exhaustively cover everything for everybody who ever needs it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/04/2021 19:31

Yeah, it is really practical and there is a system out in. It is however, as everything bit of a pain in the arse bureaucratically (as in anything really there). But it takes away this "are you? Or are you not?". It's nkt perfect by far, but it is better than nothing. He also had blue badge for parking.
(We also had no self declared exemptions for mask wearing. You got letter from a doctor or you did not go into the premises. Didn't help much with the numbers though🙄)
Sorry for derail!

HadEnoughofOtherThreads · 09/04/2021 19:56

We’re currently sharing DP’s Tesla. Decided to get rid of my economical Mini Clubman just before the 1st lockdown as I needed a bigger car (family of 5, kids’ bikes, etc). Haven’t replaced it yet as I’ve been WFH since.
I only need to drive the Tesla 2-3 times a week for the AM school run and once a week to do the big food shop.

Tesla is great and very roomy. DP is well-built and tall, tall kids including an adult child. Automatic collision sensors whilst driving and stationary (parking sensors).
I do worry about the lack of engine noise to warn others, so I am very cautious when reversing or moving out of parking spaces. Most people don’t look when crossing the road, regardless of engine noise or not.

HadEnoughofOtherThreads · 09/04/2021 19:59

*And we live in London.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/04/2021 20:12

Thw cheapest tesla I found is 24k from 2014😱

The way technology moves, isn't there issue with it being basically obsolete in old cars now? No idea. Asking😁

lettinggoagain · 09/04/2021 20:41

@Macncheeseballs

Able bodied or not, is slightly derailing the point of the thread
How is it derailing the thread?? Disabled people often need bigger vehicles due to transporting wheelchairs etc, which are practicalities that some don't have to think of.

Bfs mums disabled and they have a 4x4 which is classed as 'disability car' they got through the council. If they made a regulations to get ride of these then they'd have no transport. She won't go on public transport.

Rhayader · 09/04/2021 20:59

We live inside the ULEZ which means we needed a petrol car. We also need a 7 seater to fit all the kids in. It was sad to say goodbye to our old hatchback when when my youngest was born we had quite limited options of cars to buy that fit those two categories and ended up buying a skoda kodiaq SUV.

Opal93 · 09/04/2021 21:41

I recently bought one. I do love it, being high up makes me and the kids feel safer. However it is costing a lot more in fuel. It has a really large boot which is great for bikes/scooters/pram and all the gear that comes with having children and 3 car seats fit in the back. It has been difficult getting used to parking and the spacing though I definitely need to work on it

Macncheeseballs · 09/04/2021 21:49

Rickitarr, we need to find a solution to reducing our reliance on cars that benefits everyone including the less abled, sorry that angered you but its a huge problem that needs addressing

worriedatthemoment · 09/04/2021 22:36

We have what is termed as a suv as we need the space it gives in size , its easy ti park and doesn't take much more space up than my toyota yaris
I don't see the need for porshe etc but if people want one let them have one
Of course cars have got bigger as to fit 5 in comfortably etc
Years ago we used to squish about 8 or us in a little car as no seat belt laws or car seats etc

worriedatthemoment · 09/04/2021 22:37

Also our suv is only a 1.2 engine

Dongdingdong · 09/04/2021 22:41

I wonder how many people on this thread who hate SUVs take long haul flights, eat meat or have multiple children. Probably most of them. Some people’s hypocrisy knows no bounds.

worriedatthemoment · 09/04/2021 22:42

Why do people feel the need to tell others what car they should or should not buy or drive
Shall we apply the same to houses , I mean why have 4 beds if you don't need, we can squeeze 2 x2 beds in the place instead.
People need to concentrate on there own lifes and less on others

lettinggoagain · 09/04/2021 22:44

That seems the way this country is going! I wouldnt be surprised if they start discussing soon about a child limit rule like they have in China. Confused
worriedatthemoment · 09/04/2021 22:48

@Ginuwine we have a quashquai but its petrol and only a 1.2 engine so better than most smaller cars
We did have a diesel a small astra bought it when we were told by a previous goverment they were better for the environment , hence low tax etc
Sold up for quahquai as also would be doing more short journeys as well and when realised not that good , can't day the quashquai feels bigger than the astra though and easier to park as has cameras and sensors.

worriedatthemoment · 09/04/2021 22:50

@lettinggoagain yes I know it seems people want control over everything and everyone, I dread the future for my kids sometimes , the world isn't better in my opinion in lots of ways than it was when i was a kid 30 years ago, reading some comments online etc how people behave is so much worse , lack of respect for others and different opinions is awful

bluetongue · 09/04/2021 22:51

I currently drive an older, small car. For my next car I’m considering a small to medium SUV. For context I live in Australia and cars in general are larger here.

As part of my job I hear about death and serious injury by dangerous driving cases. A scary number of these involve a small car versus SUV or work/trade type vehicle. The poor little cars don’t stand a chance Sad I just don’t feel safe in my small car now.

DdraigGoch · 10/04/2021 06:38

@Graciebobcat

Also it's not really surprising that cars have got bigger when people have. Ever tried to get into an old Mini? Cosy. And really unsafe if someone crashed into you.
My mother and her three sisters used to fit in the back of a classic mini. No seat belts in the back seats at the time of course.

That’s sad. If that’s the case I would tax them heavily to deter people that don’t truly need them from buying them. For legitimate business use you could then apply for a tax rebate.
Macncheeseballs · 10/04/2021 13:55

Worried - I don't dread the future for my kids, I hope they will get the chance to live in modern, advanced car free cities that encourage more walking, cycling, scooting and public transport.

None of those things, actually. Sorry to disappoint. Last long haul flight was 2009. Don't eat meat and only have one child.

As for people who need larger cars because they have disabilities, it's not beyond the wit of (wo)man to come up with exemptions although there are a lot of smaller cars that can accommodate those issues such as the Honda Jazz which has lots of headroom and good seats for those with back trouble. And there are other cars which accommodate wheelchairs.

ElephantsNest · 10/04/2021 15:11

The old hypocrisy argument....it’s okay for anyone to point out that certain choices have consequences. I last flew in 2015, have one child and eat meat maybe once a week for what it’s worth.
