To think there is a serious problem with the housing market in this country

Kitchendisco21 · 06/04/2021 16:06

I was just about to buy my first home having spent 10 years saving a deposit. Thanks to the stupid help to buy intervention, the houses I was able to buy are now 50k more expensive so I am completely priced out. I am so utterly sick of it.

And no, I can’t move elsewhere/ get somewhere smaller/eat fewer avocados! I have been saving for a decade.

Aibu to be so fed up. I read last week that 98% of keyworkers couldn’t buy a home in the uk now. When will people actually wake up & see what a major problem there is? I am so angry.

Only on mumsnet would 800k be described as ‘not much of a cushion

Given what we have been through it isn’t

I am just trying to warn you that life doesn’t run in straight lines where everything works out and you always have money left over to put into savings. Sometimes you have to cash in the gold in order to pay your electricity bill and buy bread.

True dat!

On another thread someone bringing in 9k a month, putting 2k plus into savings/pensions, having a rainy day fund, separate saving vehicles for dc uni etc, small mortgage relative to earnings was also told they didn't have have enough of a cushion!

I think it’s more that tulisaisbrill has spent much of the thread telling other people how they are getting it so wrong and that she has the answers to what we all should be doing. It was just being pointed out that she may not be as bulletproof financially as she thinks she is.
terribleg · 09/04/2021 00:30

No one is completely bulletproof financially nonetheless 800k & 150k salary is still a pretty good cushion. The only thing I can see she said is older people had better opportunities but i've not read the whole thread yet & don't have the filter thing.

£800,000 and a £150k job is pretty good but as I was trying to explain was that although we didn’t have quite that. Within 5 years, having to pay for private cancer treatment and operations because we think we lived in the wrong postcode and years of unemployment that cushion gets wiped out very quickly.

TulisaIsBrill · 09/04/2021 00:49

All I’ll say is I do have excellent private medical cover and critical illness cover too. But yeah, I’m not stupid enough to think that something unexpected can’t affect me. But ffs - I seriously think it’s ridiculous to say I’m not trying my hardest to make my family pretty resilient to shocks.

And the only thing I mentioned that I think is a good idea - nothing I said was financial advice, is to stuff your pension as full as possible because of the advantages of tax relief. And diversify your assets. I mean if anyone believes that’s ‘bad advice’ that no one should follow, fair enough. I don’t.

TulisaIsBrill · 09/04/2021 00:54

And frankly enough, leaving aside a personal problem, if there’s an economic shock where I lose my job etc, then so will many others, so it’s not like I’ll be alone. Except I’ll have a large amount of buffer that will hopefully tide me over.

If it was a ‘local’ shock to my particular job, then judging by LinkedIn, I could walk into innumerable 100k jobs tomorrow. The 150k one might be a bit tougher, granted.

TulisaIsBrill · 09/04/2021 00:57

Plus, remember I’m 800k liquid. It’s not tied up in a stupid pile of bricks.

How could we forget 😂😂😂😂. You really don’t need to keep justifying your choices to strangers on the internet! For someone who declared themselves ‘out’ of the thread, that sure is a lot of detail.
Iamthewombat · 09/04/2021 09:25

How unpleasant to read about a financially savvy woman being ill-wished.

You forgot to mention your £150k job and sing the crypto advert, like you do in the very other post.

Reminds me of that time when Katherine Jenkins put out a tweet or something saying she wanted to correct all the rumours about her affair with David Beckham, that there was nothing going on. And everyone, literally everyone in the media and elsewhere scratched their heads saying ‘what rumour?’

TulisaIsBrill · 09/04/2021 10:31

I forgot about that. Yes, the rumours of my affair with Idris Elba are unfounded.

🤷🏻‍♀️ Haters gonna hate. I think they are just pissed of because I don’t borrow via their beloved banking system.
TulisaIsBrill · 09/04/2021 10:38

Most of these haters probably can’t envisage a person who’s accrued this level of wealth without using leverage - it makes their brain explode because it’s not via their sacrosanct ‘property market’.

BLToutanowhere · 09/04/2021 10:49

Round my way they are building new estates everywhere, but the prices are only going upwards. Why is this? Demand. Until you address this, you'll never build enough new houses to give everyone a house.

Conveniently ignoring the supply aspect. Of fake money and a never ending amount of schemes to prop it up.
DynamoKev · 09/04/2021 11:07

@TulisaIsBrill

Fact is, unless you earn 85k plus in the south east, you are utterly disenfranchised if you want a shot at all three of
  • Kids
  • House
  • Retirement

It's crazy and it shouldn't be like this.

And remember - this is coming from a person who earns 150k and has f*kloads of assets so it's not the words of 'envy' and I don't need to be told 'cut down on avocados and iPhones'. I'm sorted but I'm very angry most of my friends are f*ked.

One reason for this is the stupid over concentration of jobs in the South East, many of which don’t even need to be there.

jealousy is an awful thing. Have fun with your 800k, I know who I'm listening to for advice ;)

Indeed.

Frankly I don’t want these debt fuelled banker fellators to do what I do anyway. Let them enjoy their BOE/FED ‘money’ - I’ll follow the words of Shania. She’s proven a better economist than Paul Krugman, Mark Carney or Janet Yellen.

lettinggoagain · 09/04/2021 15:55

@TulisaIsBrill oooh I've not heard of her I will have to get learning, you're teaching me haha! But exactly, until you actually learn how this 'money' is created you can't make any real sense of it all.

Definitive how the housing market got messed up play list:

  • Dizzee rascal - dirtee cash
  • Shania Twain - ka-ching

Two songs that say more about the state of affairs then anything else imho.

But if you really want to watch something that goes right back to 2003, and would never be shown today

This BBC (yes - that fawning property propaganda institution today - can you believe it!) documentary goes into exactly how the market got so messed up. Liar loans. Prices are set at the margin, so if people were allowed to just lie and say they earn twice what they could to get a mortgage, guess what happened to prices!

This is a golden piece of history - it should be shown to every politician and every young person to explain exactly how it came to be they are paying for this madness.

TulisaIsBrill · 09/04/2021 16:16

Btw to anyone who’s wondering how I can spend so much time on this thread over the last couple of days, I work part time.

So yeah, all you haters - I can add a 100k to my salary in a heartbeat if I just said ‘ok, I’ll go full time’. But why bother when I’d be taxed so much?

BillMasen · 09/04/2021 16:24
