Is this weird or am I a slattern

I think it totally fine to wash tee towels in with clothes washing .
My partner thinks they should be washed separately on a hot wash.
He thinks it just not right to have tee towels and underwear washed together as its unhygienic.
My clothes washing is on a 40 degrees wash.
Tell me Im not mad .
Happy Easter everyone.

I wash them with clothes at 30. That's even worse! They do go in the tumble dryer though, which I think gets very hot.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 04/04/2021 09:36

I don't use fabric softener because I'm allergic to it. Everything from towels to cloths to mucky undies gets put in the machine together and washed at 30. We do a drum clean every few weeks so it's not full of crap.

notalwaysalondoner · 04/04/2021 09:38

I do the same. If I’m doing sheets or towels I may stick tea towels in with them at 60C but only if I’m doing them anyway without anything else. I’m looking into reusable nappies and quite a lot of people put them in with other clothes (sometimes they rinse them separately first) which I find a bit gross, but maybe I’ll get used to the idea...

MrsJBaptiste · 04/04/2021 09:39

Everything in together on 40° although I do split lights/darks.

Recently started using Lenor Unstoppables which make everything smell lovely so who cares what goes in together?

Steptoeshorse1965 · 04/04/2021 09:39

Think life a bit too short to worry about such things myself.

Cokie3 · 04/04/2021 09:40

YABU for making me look up the definition of 'slattern' (which all dictionaries online lists it as a 'dated' term basically no longer in usage). The amount of very old-fashioned and out of use words I see on here gives all the online dictionaries a good workout. I once complained to a friend (pre-mumsnet) that people in England are so old-fashioned they still speak like Shakespearian times or Enid Blyton. I remember reading 'hurrah' (couldn't figure how that was pronounced) in a E.B book, and seeing 'jolly well' (almost peed myself laughing at how embarrassing and ridiculous it sounds), only to come on here and see 'jolly well' or 'jolly along' by someone, and a 'hurrah' by someone else. Proved my friend right when I showed her how they speak on here. Anyway,
I throw everything in one load if I can - sheets, towel, underwear, clothes. Wouldn't have the foggiest what the degrees are. It's automatic machine and I've never had or seen a machine where you can adjust the temperature degrees. Hot, Cold, and Warm setting, yep. But no picking the degrees though unfortunately.

DancesWithDaffodils · 04/04/2021 09:42

Everything all in together - although I do separate into whites, lights and darks.

No fabric conditioner in a wash.

Outside to dry if at all possible.

Inertia · 04/04/2021 09:43

Tea towels/ dishcloths/ aprons/ doormats / cleaning cloths go on a 90 wash every few days- this serves as the high-temperature wash recommended for washing machines.

I don’t put clothes in with this because I don’t want clothes ruined by high temperatures and bleach.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/04/2021 09:43

I’m a slattern

kereh · 04/04/2021 09:44

How do you manage to get through just one kitchen towel a day? I get through 5/6 daily by drying hands, wiping surfaces etc.

All kitchen and bathroom towels are kept in a separate basket which is full after a few days and boil washed. I don't understand the concept of not having enough for a load unless you never wash your hands or are happy to use damp towels.

Watchingthetelly · 04/04/2021 09:44

That thing when you wash and dry your hands at someone else’s house and they smell of damp and mildew. That’s towels washed at 30.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/04/2021 09:44

I will slatternise with you op. I too wash everything at 40!

YourCakesAreShit · 04/04/2021 09:46

Isn't that more just a towel that's used constantly and never changed? Which, by the way, is utterly boakworthy.
allgoodinthehood · 04/04/2021 09:47

Steptoe believe me Im not worried 😀
I just couldn't see the logic of putting tea towels separately in a washing machine . I personally think his work clothes ( manual job ) are far dirtier than than a tea towel .

Not at my house
CandyLeBonBon · 04/04/2021 09:47

Well that was a rather odd diatribe @Cokie3 - were you generally just having a bit of a dig or were you trying to be funny?

Benjispruce2 · 04/04/2021 09:47

YANBU.You should have set up a vote. Of course they go in with any washing. Does he think his pants should go in a separate wash?

thatonehasalittlecar · 04/04/2021 09:47

Your body’s immune system is a wonderful thing. No one needs to wash things at high temperatures (NHS uniform rules notwithstanding) and washing towels / bedding every day is disgusting. The planet is in a lot more danger than you are from week (or even month) old towels.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 04/04/2021 09:48

I am a slaters too, but not about towels and tea towels! Clothes get separated by colour, towels, bedding and tea towels each have their own washes. My tea towels go on a 90 degree wash, nothing in with them, washing liquid no softener.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/04/2021 09:49

No. That's a towel which has been washed at whatever temperature and then left in the machine too long before hanging out!

It doesn't even quite make sense. If everyone in England speaks like that right now, how can it be old fashioned?
Pleasure · 04/04/2021 09:50

Towels and tea towels together at 60
Bedding at 60
Clothes at 30 or 40

allgoodinthehood · 04/04/2021 09:52

I thought the word Slattern covered it perfectly.

UnderHisAye · 04/04/2021 09:52

Why does he think tea towels get especially dirty? What's he doing with them that they're too dirty to touch clothes?

fizbosshoes · 04/04/2021 09:53

I generally wash everything pale coloured (unless delicate or wool) at 50° and everything else at 40°.

MN seems to have much higher, and less eco hygeine standards than me. Grin
