The mysterious cut and fractured finger

Hello you lovely net full of vipers... I have a mystery (well 2 mysteries) for you to solve.

  1. Aibu to think that if you fractured your finger you would know how you did it?
  1. This ones going to need a diagram...(it will follow) how would one get a cut on the underside of their leg that ran from one side of the leg to the other just about 4 inches above the back of the knee... so imagine someone standing up with their back to you, the scratch/cut would run horizontally across the width of their leg... not actually a cut but a large deep scratch about 2-4mm thick that's not directly straight... bicycle injury apparently but I'm not seeing it

Here's the diagram of leg cut/scratch to scale of course

I very frequently find myself covered in bruises and have no idea how I got them, so i don't think it's a huge stretch to imagine someone could injure themself without remembering it.

Heyha · 03/04/2021 21:36

I'm in...but first what do the edges of the cut/scratch look like? Clean or jaggery?
As a smallholder I have had all sorts of weird bumps and marks that I've had to think back about how I've got them BUT I agree I'd have definitely known if I'd actually fractured a finger or toe or even come close "that bloody gate/pig/pony/door" kind of thing.

TheMatryoshka · 03/04/2021 21:37

I don't really know how to answer this, some context might be helpful!

NiceTwin · 03/04/2021 21:37

Could it have been done by the pedal? That would leave a horizontal mark.

I can't imagine how you could not recall how you fractured a finger although my father fractured a rib and only found out 6 months later, has no idea how it occurred.

LizRegina · 03/04/2021 21:38

@ShinyMe have you ever broken or fractured something? I've found them excruciatingly painful as have all people I know but looking for a bigger range of opinions on people who have actually experienced a fracture

halesie · 03/04/2021 21:39

No, not necessarily. People's sensory feedback can be v different. Friend's DS fractured his wrist and barely noticed. I find bruises and cute on me that I have no clue about. Like PP have said, context would be useful...

Bunnybigears · 03/04/2021 21:42

What do you think happened, I've had all sorts of odd injuries on the back of my legs when riding DS's bike as not has spikes metal pedals. Also fractured fingers without knowing about it until later.

CushionsandCandles · 03/04/2021 21:43

2- doesn't worry me, particularly scratches common

1- makes me wary of DV or alcohol.

Mollymalone123 · 03/04/2021 21:43

I fractured a finger when a door slammed in it- it swelled up but wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be.also walked around on 4 broken toes and couldn’t wear my shoes for about 3/4 weeks- didn’t get any treatment for them- back when I was about 14 years old. I broke them jumping in a friend’s pool and didn’t get treatment- my mum was a nurse so unless my leg was hanging off then u were expected to just get on with it.

Bunnybigears · 03/04/2021 21:43

I bloomin knew about it when I fractured my elbow though. I think fingers and toes are a bit different. DH has fractured toes and not realised.

TheMatryoshka · 03/04/2021 21:43

So you think someone is lying to you about their injuries? I don't get it

dancinfeet · 03/04/2021 21:43

I had an ankle xray about a year and a half ago, turned out I had sprained it. The nurse who did the xray said that there were numerous small healing fractures on my heel bone and ankle in various stages, none of which I remember specifically doing or had been to the minor injuries department for. The sprain must have hurt more.

Mollymalone123 · 03/04/2021 21:43

The scratch/cut could be the pedal mark

ShinyMe · 03/04/2021 21:44

I haven't broken any bones, no. But I do know people with very different pain thresholds. In my experience, often sporty people don't feel injuries til the adrenaline wears off. My dad was an ice climber and would come home with cuts on his face where bits of ice fell on him and he didn't notice at the time. An ex of mine cracked some ribs falling off a horse once and didn't feel any pain til later.

DrWankincense · 03/04/2021 21:46
  1. Easily? Like if you caught the back of your leg on the pedal or something?

  2. Possibly a bit odd but people do have different pain thresholds so perhaps.

I am extremely clumsy and injure myself frequently but don't always realise at the time. It's only the next day when I have a bump or bruise I notice. And if I don't notice for a few days I'd often be hard pushed to tell you how I did it.

Xiaoxiong · 03/04/2021 21:46

I have been scraped exactly like that when stepping down off my bike, forgetting the clip is in on the other side, pushing my foot down to undo the clip and thwacking the other pedal into the back of the knee of my standing leg. If I hadn't been wearing leggings, the edge of my pedal would probably have drawn blood. I've had all sorts of cuts, scrapes and bruises from cycling, most of which I can't even remember getting!

Do you have reason to suspect a lie though, is the more pertinent question...

LeroyJenkinssss · 03/04/2021 21:47

A fair number of people have ‘a bit sore’ wrist or ankle and it turns out to be broken. It’s not hugely uncommon. A tip of finger fracture is easily missed and very often overlooked. I have asked a number of people if they remember when they broke x or y and they didn’t even know it had been broken.

What’s the issue with whoever is telling you about their injuries?

Beetlelove · 03/04/2021 21:48

My son fractured his finger a few weeks ago - absolutely no pain at all. No discomfort- nothing. I only took him to the hospital because he did it at school and they advised me to get it checked incase his bail fell off (that part was bruised). If it had happened at the weekend we wouldn’t have taken him! He currently in a split with no physical activity for 8 weeks so it’s a serious-ish break but he still says it did not and does not hurt at all.

DrWankincense · 03/04/2021 21:48

Sorry, I'm slow to type so see the latest replies.
I've broken several toes, which did hurt and bruise badly but I could walk/limp around ok and fractured one which I knew nothing about until I had a different foot issue caused by historic fracture.

Beetlelove · 03/04/2021 21:49

BrimFullOfAsher · 03/04/2021 21:49

I have a particularly nastily fractured finger - it didn't actually immediately hurt. Though I knew I had definitely injured it as I couldn't bend it. I thought it was just dislocated though, as there was no pain - just numbness/loss of sensation

Moondust001 · 03/04/2021 21:53

(1) Just a finger? I broke my ankle and didn't notice for four weeks. It was a bit sore though. I have also broken two toes without noticing in my youth.

(2) Playing with the dog.

So...
I've found them excruciatingly painful as have all people I know but looking for a bigger range of opinions on people who have actually experienced a fracture
... you are obviously a wimp!

needadvice54321 · 03/04/2021 21:54

My 17 year old broke his wrist playing rugby, got up and carried on playing.

It was only when we got home that I thought we should get it checked before his next game, took him to A&E and it was broken! Before it was xrayed the doctor said she would be amazed if it was broken but to "dot the i's" she'd get it xrayed. She was amazed by the results!

magicstar1 · 03/04/2021 22:04

Twice I’ve gone to hospital in the past few years ... a broken wrist, and a broken thumb. Both times I was told that they were rebreaks. I remember spraining my wrist aged 8...apparently that was really broken. The thumb I have no clue. I must have had a high pain threshold as a child.
