To ask about new Mirena coil and bleeding?

MrsBDarcy · 03/04/2021 18:07

I know I am being a bit naughty using AIBU, but wanted some traffic Blush
Got mine on 10th March. Some bleeding for a bit then it settles. Then spotting and light pinkish bleeding for a week or so. Then period roughly when it should have arrived and much heavier than previous bleeding so I assume definitely due to cycle. But I'm still bleeding 10 days later. Lightly but had a gush that soaked through knickers and jeans just as I thought it was easing. Watery but some stringy small clots. I'm sorry. This is horrible to describe. Is this me having a clear out before they potentially stop? I've had it put in to try and stop periods and with them, my hormonal migraines I've posted about before
Any experience? Thank you for reading this

I had spotting constantly for about 6 months, then periods gradually got lighter over the next year before finally stopping. It was awful for the first 6 months, but worth it.

Pinkyxx · 03/04/2021 18:38

same, spotting for 6 months then no periods at all and my migraines stopped as well. I'm on my 3rd never looked back!

MrsBDarcy · 03/04/2021 18:53

I just need to hang in there then? I'm knackered. Likely psychosomatic but I feel drained ...

Skysblue · 03/04/2021 18:55

I bled constantly for 3-4 months then had it taken out. Not a fan.

Hayder · 03/04/2021 19:02

Irregular bleeding is the norm for the first 3 months of having a Mirena coil, you should have this explained during your pre-coil Counselling. I’m really hoping you had counselling prior to having it fitted?

MrsBDarcy · 03/04/2021 19:36

Yes it is in the leaflet and was mentioned. I'm just interested in others' experiences

Criddlington · 03/04/2021 19:48

Yes, OP, your experience sounds familiar. It went on for a few months. Not great. For people with very heavy periods I'd say the end justifies the means, because it can transform your life, but if it's just for contraception then there may be better options ... the intermittent bleeding can be quite disruptive.

Mary46 · 03/04/2021 20:01

Hi op mine erratic at start for 5 to 6 weeks. Settled great. 3rd coil now. Not for everybody. Hope it settles for u

DramaAlpaca · 03/04/2021 20:03

Yes, normal. It will settle down but it can take up to six months. I think it took around four months for me, but after that no periods at all.

Ugzbugz · 03/04/2021 20:05

Yes rubbish for first 3 months but been great ever since, literally a day if light spotting now and then x

snowone · 03/04/2021 20:23

I've not had the mirena but I did have the implant which works in a similar way and I spotted 6 months. Was just about to get it removed when it finally stopped.

I currently have the Kyleena coil and I've had little to no bleeding since I had it put in but my periods were very light in the first place.

user1471462428 · 03/04/2021 20:40

I still have periods with a mirena coil and very heavily. I’ve had it for nearly 3 years and never seen any improvement, still also have migraines.

MrsBDarcy · 03/04/2021 21:21

@user1471462428 I'm sorry to hear that
My periods aren't heavy so that's not an issue. No need for contraception. It's literally to try and stop periods and hormone fluctuations. I guess I'll have to hand in there. What's that other coil type? Does that also have progesterone?

CareBear50 · 03/04/2021 21:28

I hated mine. Got it removed after eight months due to constant v might bleeding.....never felt clean....felt like the last day of my period constantly.

Now on mini pill which suits me v well. I'm low in iron so needed something to help with v heavy periods (not for contraception)

itsgettingwierd · 03/04/2021 21:33

I had mine beginning of January.

I had one last august that came out with severe bleeding in October.

I've bled pretty much since then and get a week of being ok.

Also have the seem to stop and sudden gush. I've been living in some cheap period pants from Amazon for past 3 months!

Last period was still ridiculously heavy (flooding through super tampon and pad every 20 minutes at times)

I was told 3-6 months to settle and then they may get lighter.

I have mine for endometriosis and possibly adenomyosis.

I'm like you and living in hope Grin

itsgettingwierd · 03/04/2021 21:35

Can I add not the same pair of pants 🤣 I have 6 pairs and will not leave house without them.

ElspethFlashman · 03/04/2021 21:40

I had mine for heavy bleeding.

Afraid it took 4 months for the flooding to stop!

I gritted my teeth and told myself to wait before throwing in the towel as I'd heard it was normal. But by God it was grim at the time!

But then it stopped dead. I haven't had a period in 4 years. 100% worth it for me.

What pissed me off is the term "irregular bleeding" which implies intermittent. Not constant flooding! No wonder they don't put that in the brochure!

MrsBDarcy · 03/04/2021 22:19

I was considering washable pads as I'm getting sore from sanitary towels
I haven't had this kind of whoosh before so was a bit shocked

Cushionsnotpillows · 04/04/2021 00:13

I got mine for very heavy periods after having DC. It took about 6 months to settle (with periods being as bad as they were before, still regular though and not much in between unexpectedly) but then it was like a switch just flicked and at the 6 month mark, no more periods at all. Loved it.

Marriagegoingtoimplode · 04/04/2021 00:29

Some people need the pill in conjunction with the mirena coil to manage bleeding. As pp’s have stated bleeding can be unpredictable for the first six months

user1471462428 · 04/04/2021 08:22

@MrsBDarcy there is a copper coil but my family planning weren’t keen on them and steer me away from it, not sure why.

MrsBDarcy · 04/04/2021 08:46

I'm having this one because of its potential to reduce and stop bleeding and hopefully take with it the fluctuations in hormones that set off my migraines. I feel a bit weary today though. I might get some iron. Is there any iron in chocolate?! 🤔

ForgedInFire · 04/04/2021 08:49

I bled constantly for 6 weeks when I had mine fitted and then I contacted my doctor who prescribed me a pill to take for 2 weeks and no bleeding since! Sorry but I don't remember the name of the pill

moochingtothepub · 04/04/2021 09:10

Sounds exactly what I had - was around 3 weeks then settled, only spotting since, I get 3 days spotting around every 4 weeks but not enough to need a pad really (I do use a liner for security but last all day)

Ilovefriday · 04/04/2021 09:42

I am on my third coil. My periods have never stopped completely but they are very light. I get a "period" every month, another bit of spotting that seems to coincide with my daughter's cycle and occasionally some spotting in between. It is always very light and I never need to use more than a washable panty liner (sorry if TMI) I am seriously considering switching to light period pants. The first 3 months were awful, constant light bleeding with random heavier days but it does get much better. Good luck.
