We need to talk about socks

Where do they actually go?!
I put in 5 pairs with the rest of the washing. I know I did. I looked at what I was doing. I was even thinking about the Bermuda triangle of socks when I was doing it so I know I made sure they went in with their friend.
Yet here I am, folding laundry and am missing the friend of 3 socks. 3! I'm the only one who has touched this laundry and I feel like I'm going crazy!

Please, someone, tell me the truth of the sock. I must know the truth. Is it aliens?

@cardibach

I just buy black socks. All black. I may have an odd number, but I don’t have odd socks.
This. It is the only solution.
taintedtrees · 31/03/2021 02:04

Black socks don't work. They fade at different rates and you end up with 20 black socks all different shades. Trust me, I had this very phenomenal just yesterday.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 31/03/2021 03:49

I’ve just taken to wearing odd socks as long as they are the same length I don’t care.
I do have some that match if they are going to be seen.
DH refers to them as “divorced” socks as in the have left their partner and found a new one.

DinosApple · 31/03/2021 07:32

I have a massive pile of odd socks too. It started when the DC were tiny and it has grown since. DH wants me to keep them for dusters Hmm.

I shall count before I bin them later today!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 31/03/2021 07:39

Whoever is responsible is almost certainly also the pen thief. No matter how many pens I buy there’s never one to hand. WHERE DO THEY GO?

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 31/03/2021 12:29

@DinosApple

I legit need to know how many there are Grin

And where do hair bands go anyway? I buy at least 100 a year, yet I can never find any.

I've found socks underneath the rubber seal of the washing machine. lift up the rubber after a wash and check there if you have any missing

x2boys · 31/03/2021 13:14

I just buy black socks for everyone ,yes they still go missing ,and sometimes people end up with different size socks ,but they are always black.

BLToutanowhere · 31/03/2021 13:22

The socks have a legend, a prophecy that one day, a sock will come forth from the land of B'asket to lead them all to a new world. A land where socks can pair up regardless of colour. Where a few holes in the toe don't matter. Where fading isn't punished by the human overlords. They wait for this day but in the meantime, they sacrifice to the sock God's to try and make it happen.

Lillyhatesjaz · 31/03/2021 15:03

I have discovered that the socks sometimes go over the back of the drawer I keep them in if I take the drawer right out there is often a few in the base

Snog · 31/03/2021 15:34

Why not wash your socks in a laundry net so there is nowhere for them to escape to?

Lurkingforawhile · 31/03/2021 15:47

I sorted out my OHs sock drawer last year (very bored after surgery on sick leave). He had been stealing my odd socks. Not purposely of course but through carelessness. That's where I find most of them now.

RosieRedPetal · 31/03/2021 16:00

Someone told me the only solution is to wash them folded into pairs.

Sadly I don't think I'll find mine in his. I went complete Marie Kondo a few years ago and I won't let him touch my laundry now, I actually quite look forwards to sitting down with a big basket and a cup of coffee and start folding things beautifully Grin

I know, I'm pathetic.

That would just feel like I'm letting them win to be honestAngry

I agree with the socks. We have an odd sock bag and do sometimes reunite pairs (good task for the children).

I think DD2 may have all the hair bobbles though - they multiply once they get to her room.

But, OP YABU for your title.... now I have a variation of the 90's song 'Lets talk about sex' going round in my head 😟

@JesusIsAnyNameFree

Took some time, but 104 odd socks, including one baby bootie... My youngest is 10 and I didn't bother with booties because she was a kicker. The oldest socks were from the 1970's, hand knitted, and were my sole (and much appreciated) inheritance from my grandpa. There were no unseemly arguments about money in this family Grin.

There were more odd socks but we found around 25 pairs in the odd socks bag.

104! That's nutsGrin

It must feel good having those 25 pairs though! I feel oddly satisfied knowing I have a lot of clean socks. I think it's cause I'm worried about having coronavirus on the floor and keep changing my socks a ridiculous amount of times Hmm
