We need to talk about socks

Where do they actually go?!
I put in 5 pairs with the rest of the washing. I know I did. I looked at what I was doing. I was even thinking about the Bermuda triangle of socks when I was doing it so I know I made sure they went in with their friend.
Yet here I am, folding laundry and am missing the friend of 3 socks. 3! I'm the only one who has touched this laundry and I feel like I'm going crazy!

Please, someone, tell me the truth of the sock. I must know the truth. Is it aliens?

I have a set of five pairs for my 9 year old (one of many sets but this particular one he weirdest). Each heel and underside has a separate colour. I have all five colours and not a single pair. Insane.

This is the main suspect.

They are inside duvet covers. And even sneakier, inside the elasticated corners of fitted sheets.

But honestly if you use a tumble dryer check where you empty the filter.

I live alone, I don't wash or dry socks with bedding so no way is it in there, and I have an odd sock box with about twenty in.

A few do seem to get dropped on the way to or from the laundry and then don't get matched up again because they are of sync.

And they're not in the washer, I just got a new one AND had the drains rodded!

I think maybe some fall down the back of a radiator. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't put socks in the tumble dryer.

Odd socks regenerate into Tupperware lids that don’t fit any containers.

No tumble dryer here either. We have been discussing getting one but it sounds like the sock problem will just get worse if we do!

I own a sock bag. I’m so lazy I just live with the odd socks 😂

I have a few theories

Bedding
Husband incapable of pairing so odds are paired as ‘it’ll do’ - drives me insane!
kids sock drawers appear to one sock not paired and they don’t think to bring it to the sock basket

It won't be bedding for me, I always turn the duvet cover inside out and then grab the corners of the duvet and shake the cover down over the duvet so it flips to the right side. It would come falling out then!

It is amazing how they just disappear. I end up chucking the lone socks after a year.! It's one of life's big mysteries.

Yep sock disappearance is a big problem here too. We have a bag full and every few weeks I go through and try to match them up but never find them all.

DD now gets them once I've given up and turns them into sock puppets or barbie clothes or shreds them for stuffing pillows/sleeping bags/teddies she's made.

I have to assume some sort of sock monster/borrower/gnome is stealing them because otherwise I'd find them somewhere at some point.

I blame the Hogwarts house elves!

@WomenAreBornNotWorn funny you should say that, every single one of our teaspoons has gone missing over the last few days. We don't have a single one in the drawer, and the dishes are all done 😂 DH said he has 3 in his office from when he's taken a cafetiere of coffee there and has taken a spoon with him for refills but that doesn't account for all the rest!

Someone told me to buy a bunch of socks in just one or two designs and Chuck out the rest, I did and the problem was solved. Instant quality of life improvement - still makes me happy several years later.

My teen DS is unbelievable for this. I buy him socks, then within a week or two there are no pairs, just odd ones. But this doesn’t happen to anyone else’s socks, so I conclude in our house it’s not the washing machine. DS always wears odd socks as he never has a pair.

We have this and also had missing pants. DD swore she had none. They weren't in the wash basket or stored on her floor. They hadn't got caught up on the ironing or left attached to her leggings. So I duly bought new packs. The following week the underwear knicker must have felt guilty and brought them back because I ended up finding 13 pairs had magically appeared from my washing machine. They didn't bring me back any socks though.

That definitely explains it, I think our forks have joined them too!

Definitely put them in net bags. Will change your life. And if they still go missing then it is definitely witchcraft

I solved this yesterday, I moved an armchair and found 20 socks. All black and all odd
