To think I can report boss for ‘fun illegal’ flight?

Bosswoes · 30/03/2021 09:54

Namechanged as outing. My boss announced to the team today that he’s flying out of the country with his wife this weekend. ‘Bit of a fun illegal flight’ he said. He’s previously laughed about attending parties during lockdown. He’s an overpromoted wankbadger at the best of times and seems to revel in telling us these stories glorying in what an absolute untouchable don he is.

But he’s right isn’t he... There’s nothing we can actually do? Me and two other team members are absolutely gunning to report at this stage, but, as his little underlings, we don’t even know his address (I think that’s how people usually report?) We’ve also considered going more senior within the business but there’s only one guy above him and they’re bff bros and top guy has form for having ignored (if anything bonded over!) previous complaints - by others/ on other topics about this same guy Confused. Thoughts? I should also say the nature of our business is sort of PR/ political - the brazen hypocrisy makes my eyes water!

OP posts:

What's the flight?

CentBoppers · 30/03/2021 11:26

Does he actually have his own plane or is he taking a commercial flight?

IntermittentParps · 30/03/2021 11:27

Just get on with your own life and stop this petty crap
How is it 'petty' to be concerned about public health? If he doesn't get tested and quarantine, he's putting at risk not just people on his journey and at the destination, but also at the workplace.

OP, if you have no HR/union/industry body, might Public Health England be able to advise? (this is a stab in the dark so apologies if it's totally not what they do). Or a government dept (again, don't know who).

Itsalonghaul · 30/03/2021 11:35

If he is not joking about going away, I would ask him if he needs anything to be completed during the ten days of quarantine. If he states he isn't planning to quarantine then I would ask him where he was going, and you feel he is putting you all at risk by disregarding the quarantine. Ask him what he plans to do to safe guard the office and team.

You can do this in a perfectly civil way without offending. It is your life and safety that could be at risk, so it is okay to speak to him about it.

I would look for a new job. He sounds too tiring.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 30/03/2021 11:36

The moment he is out in public or steps into the office (if you are in one) after Tuesday morning, call the police via the non-emergency number.

Or even contact the police now. I don't agree with talking to the press or making it known via social media or any other way.

DdraigGoch · 30/03/2021 11:46

If all else fails then put laxatives in his tea.

Sounds like you all need to look for a better job anyway, though I appreciate that the job market isn't ideal at the moment.

Hadjab · 30/03/2021 11:58

So, you’re planning on reporting him for something he hasn’t actually done yet? He hasn’t even left the country, and you’re plotting a big expose? I’m assuming he’s not had his first jab yet, so you’re worried for your safety, rather than being extremely petty?

Hadjab · 30/03/2021 12:00

Contact the police to say what exactly? He hasn’t actually done anything yet!

Bloody hell!

PhilCornwall1 · 30/03/2021 12:09

*Contact the police to say what exactly? He hasn’t actually done anything yet!

Exactly. So the Police turn up at work or his home and he says, I just said it to wind them up, looks like it worked. No crime committed, send Police on their way.

Bluntness100 · 30/03/2021 12:22

The bottom line is you can’t travel for fun right now, there are all sort of hoops to jump through, so whatever he has told his team is probably bullshit. If him and his wife are flying it is hugely likely it’s due to a difficult personal Emergency but he has chosen not to share it.

And who's the arbiter of what's good for public health? Are you campaigning to close down fast food shops too? What next?
IntermittentParps · 30/03/2021 12:31

Brownteddybear, what a weird thing to say. No one is campaigning to close down fast food shops, no Confused. As far as I know, they're complying with government rules and the law. Which this man will not be if he travels abroad for a non-permitted reason and fails to get tested and quarantined.

Sleepdeprivedmama1 · 30/03/2021 12:42

Leave it; let him be all gloaty about it but really its none of your business. Plus it could come back and bite you in the backside.

Danni91 · 30/03/2021 12:48

Who is replying to him when he says these things?
Any of you?
Or do you all just sit there silent?

I think hes just trying to wind you all up!

You're either sitting there in silence looking anxious as fuck, or someones saying something and hes thinking 'ha, they can't tell me what to do!'

There is ALOT of people who don't believe covid is a thing. He could be being serious of course, has he otherwise put all the covid procedures in the work place?

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 30/03/2021 12:54

@PhilCornwall1 If he is winding people up he will stop doing so after that. I hope he is of course. Some police forces might then caution him for wasting police time for his misplaced humour.

Maybe he might actually behave like an adult after that.

memberofthewedding · 30/03/2021 12:59

I agree with the poster who said that the people who are really dodging the regulations dont boast about it. They have "ways" of making it happen and aren't going to drop themselves or their mates in the shit by bragging to the junior staff in the organization. I would take this as a wind up.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/03/2021 13:17

Wasting Police time, heard it all now.

Brownteddybear · 30/03/2021 13:18

@IntermittentParps sorry for not being clear and it's not as much directed as you but my point is that what has society become that we will all report each other for "breaking" rules/ non compliance etc and you said it affected public health. So by that rationale there are many many things that affect public health and put strain on resources.

OP is clearly unhappy at work and her manager sounds awful so what I sympathise I think her energy is best focussed elsewhere as this is petty and she's not doing it for "public health" reasons!

snackmonster · 30/03/2021 13:20

To be honest there seems to be different restrictions for rich people at the moment. I can't see the benefit of reporting him - I doubt anything would come of it and it would probably cause you more issues than him.

IntermittentParps · 30/03/2021 13:22

what has society become that we will all report each other for "breaking" rules/ non compliance etc It's become a bit more responsible.
and you said it affected public health. It does.

Sure, but this is one that's staring the OP right in the face, that affects her and colleagues as well as wider society. And she WOULD be doing it for public health reasons, by definition.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 30/03/2021 13:27

I can't help but feel as though this is an enormous waste of energy on your part.

If you're unhappy at work and I can see why you would be why not focus your energies on looking for a new job?

It would be a more positive way of channelling that frustration than sitting there steaming about someone else's life choices.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 30/03/2021 13:29

@PhilCornwall1 knowing some of the accounts about Derbyshire police, I would not put it past them.

Extremelyilluminated · 30/03/2021 13:33

Putting optrex in someone’s coffee can have potentially disastrous consequences. It can put someone in a coma.

RonObvious · 30/03/2021 13:33

@Bluntness100

Honesty I never knew so many people were itching to report folks until I used this forum, every single day there’s someone wanting to report someone for some bullshit or another, Covid, school places, this, it’s mind boggling.

Who exactly are you going to report him to?

Reported.
Arbadacarba · 30/03/2021 13:34

Do you have a work whistleblowing line?
