AIBU to find 'Easter trees' ridiculous?

I'm already annoyed at the general melding of traditional holiday themes, eg Easter crackers, Halloween wreaths etc. Yes it is precisely none of my business and people can decorate or pull crackers however they wish but I have lots of irrelevant opinions.

But Easter trees? Easter trees have tipped me over the edge into proper Grumpy Old Women territory. Now (an important distinction) if the 'tree' is the shrubbery type then that's fine. But NOT an evergreen tree. That's nonsense!!

Evergreen trees are very well suited to Christmas because they are a symbol of life and hope when most trees are empty and bare. Makes no sense then to use them for a springtime celebration. Easter time is time to celebrate new life; lambs chicks, flowers budding and trees growing new leaves. An evergreen tree does not symbolise these things.

YANBU: Evergreen trees have no place in Easter decorations

Rant over. Thanks for reading. I'm off to have a herbal tea to calm down. 🍵

It isn't an evergreen tree, it is usually just twigs or a white bare branch tree with decorated eggs hung on it for decoration.

UltraVioletRays · 30/03/2021 06:52

YANBU

Dogsaresomucheasier · 30/03/2021 06:53

I’ve not seen an evergreen Eater tree. Pussy Willow sticks in a vase with eggs hanging off them were around in my (equally grumpy old lady’s) youth, though. That is an Easter tree imho.

JerryMoreIceCream · 30/03/2021 06:54

Good lord I have just looked and seen that people are digging out their Christmas trees, yes that is ridiculous. But my point stands it is just meant to be some twigs in a vase with some plastic decorated eggs hung on them to celebrate Easter and the coming of Spring.

InvincibleInvisibility · 30/03/2021 06:55

In other European countries its traditional to hang painted eggs from branches.

AlwaysColdHands · 30/03/2021 06:56

There’s one in a front garden near me, really made me smile to be honest! Celebrates spring

WaltzesWithSnobs · 30/03/2021 06:56

I've seen evergreen trees as Easter trees! Which I find ridiculous. Yes, shrubs and 'spring' type trees are fine. Quite nice, actually.

Yup. I saw someone coming out of a shop with an Easter wreath the other day. Just why? Why not enjoy xmas traditions at xmas, Easter ones at Easter, Halloween ones at Halloween etc? Why does everything need to meld into one hyper-commercialised sludgefest?

OverByYer · 30/03/2021 07:00

I put eggs on my apple blossom tree last year to bring a little lockdown cheer. I also left eggs in a basket for the little children to help themselves too. Not religious but felt we all needed a little joy. Will probably do the same this year

Rockbird · 30/03/2021 07:00

I'd rather an Easter Christmas tree than the assortment of giant serial killer-esque bunnies that someone has put out in their front garden on the road my youngest's school is on. They've put in loads of effort, God love them but bloody hell.

Sparklingbrook · 30/03/2021 07:01

Never seen an evergreen Easter tree. Only the twiggy branch things with Easter eggs etc hanging from them. Not my thing but have seen some nice ones, very cheery for Spring.

In Waitrose they sell the tree, the decorations, Easter wreaths and Easter crackers. Grin

Oysterbabe · 30/03/2021 07:05

I quite like the twiggy things but actually don't gaf how anyone chooses to decorate.

Wellyouknowbest · 30/03/2021 07:12

I want one now, but have a terror of a cat and actually probably nowhere to put it. I have a friend who decorates for each season and it makes me feel like I'm not doing enough Blush. You know not #makingmemories. (That tongue in cheek btw)

LemonRoses · 30/03/2021 07:13

Made worse that there should be no celebration, no decorations until after Good Friday. Lent is a time for fasting, solemnity and not a time for fairy lights. Easter Sunday is the time for jollies.

smigg · 30/03/2021 07:17

My mum would always bring some branches in from the garden & hang eggs on so I do the same.

Januaryissodull · 30/03/2021 07:17

I think yabu.

I haven't seen an evergreen Easter tree personally. But I have decorated some twigs with eggs.

What's the harm? It brightens the place up, you could keep the decorations for years so it doesn't have to be wasteful.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 30/03/2021 07:19

I made a Blue Peter Easter tree in the 80s. Essentially a large branched twig with decorated half egg shapes and chicks make out of 2 yellow cotton wool balls sitting in them. Possible some ribbon on it.
I was enormously proud of it.

CounsellorTroi · 30/03/2021 07:22

Didn’t even know Easter trees were a thing until I saw this thread.

DancingDunes · 30/03/2021 07:23

I was born in Germany and we have them there but they're usually sticks painted white which we hang painted eggs on. I have one of these so if you mean those YABVU however if people are using a full size Xmas tree I think they've lost the plot.

DiptyqueandDiamonds · 30/03/2021 07:30

I haven’t seen an evergreen tree used as an Easter tree yet!

We use small branches painted white in a vase to hang coloured eggs from, put up a few strings of colourful bunting in the garden and have fresh flowers in the house.

We do also have a pastel coloured wreath for the door. I don’t think that’s a Halloween tradition though as OP said?

The children enjoy it and it’s lovely to see spring and pretty colours in the house and a feeling of holiday.

Ginfilledcats · 30/03/2021 07:31

As pp said, I loved inGermany as a child and we always had little painted wooden eggs on twigs. My mum still uses the same ones, and I've done the same for my home ever since I owned one.
I also get wreaths regularly for my door, including an Easter themed one at present. I think it's nice and quite frankly something interesting and to look forward to at the moment eh?

I think I'd find Christmas style trees trimmed with Easter decs weird though but each to their own

AuntieStella · 30/03/2021 07:33

I've never seen, or seen an article about or a picture of, an evergreen.

Twigs/branches (plus or minus catkins) with (probably) home made egg decorations have been around for decades.

BoobsOnTheMoon · 30/03/2021 07:34

I had an Easter tree every year as a child. But it's a completely different thing from a Christmas tree Shock

An Easter tree is a few small branches in a vase, the branches should have buds or catkins (preferably pussy willow) and then you hang hand painted eggs from it.

It's definitely a very old tradition.

Icecreamsoda99 · 30/03/2021 07:36

I've just googled it, not my taste but if reusing the Christmas tree I can't see the harm. I'm a big one for decorating, you'd hate me OP, I have a different wreath on my door changing with the holidays and seasons Grin I'm sure I get a lot of sneering adults but the kids love it.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 30/03/2021 07:41

Omg it's so ridiculous, tat on Facebook I've seen : easter trees , easter crates, decorating your door for Easter! Hanging decorations for easter ....the list goes on. Easter is a catholic celebration with of course its roots in paganism.....I doubt anyone that buys this rubbish even knows the idea behind it all.
And dont get me started on the Easter bunny
