Struggling to sleep and just went on The Sun (I know, you don't even have to say it) to read a bit of rubbish. To my surprise there's a massive spoiler on there about the ending of a show (aired tonight) that I've watched for years and was looking forwards to watching tomorrow when I have time, as I couldn't tonight due to work and housework etc.

AIBU here? Can't we have a few days before it gets plastered all over the internet, or are we really meant to ban ourselves from the internet until we've been able to catch up on shows unless we want it ruined?! Angry

I'm probably being unreasonable to be fair, but I'm really upset! I was going to settle in with a cup of tea tomorrow and enjoy the last episode but now I know what's going to happen, so while I will watch it, it's just a whole load of meh!

I might sue for emotional distress.

And now I will try to cry myself to sleep.

For something like that I avoid the internet completely until I've seen it.

I avoid the sun at all times

drinkplease · 30/03/2021 01:54

Yabvu for reading the Sun

UhtredRagnarson · 30/03/2021 01:54

You understand how tabloids work? They compete to be the first to break the story. Of course they aren’t going to wait a day or two before publishing just for those that didn’t watch the live airing!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/03/2021 01:56

It'll be the first time they reported something accurately. Allegedly.

melj1213 · 30/03/2021 01:59

Tbh while I do try to avoid the Internet if I can't watch something as it is aired as I know I am at risk of being spoiled, I do wish media would put the explicit spoilers within the articles and make the headlines vague if it is being released within the first 24 hrs of something airing.

Like, would it kill them to put "Viewers Shock at Twist Ending to GoT" as the headline rather than "Viewers Shock at X killing Y allowing Z to take the Iron Throne in the GoT finale"? (Deliberately using GoT as the show has been out for a while, but still not using specifics bc I am sure someone would complain they were spoiled if I did)

It draws in anyone who wants to read about the GoT finale as they have seen it without explicitly spoiling the ending for those who haven't had chance to see it (imho its never a spoiler to say that that there was/will be a twist because there is always a twist in a finale, its practically the rule to have one)

I love the MCU and the lead up to Avengers Endgame was crazy with all of the fan theories etc so I knew I had to see it at the first showing bc I would not be able to avoid spoilers, so I saw it at a midnight release. By the time I had got back home and opened up my social media there were spoilers for major moments/twists/scenes already posted everywhere. For every fan that was being deliberately vague by posting "OMG Endgame was amazing, everyone needs to see it! That Cap moment (if you know, you know!) was sheer brilliance!" There were others who were posting "OMG I can't believe when X did Y/when Z died/when A event occured" for everyone to see, which ruins it.

@melj1213

Yeah, why can't they do that? Why does it have to say exactly what happened in the headline? It's ridiculous.

@UhtredRagnarson

Yes thank you, I may only have the IQ of a discarded shoe on the side of a lonely road but I do understand how they work.

I like to record the soaps and watch them in chunks on lazy days. I have to avoid a lot, including not looking at the paper stands in shops, to not get spoilers. They should just hint.

Sorka · 30/03/2021 03:01

Drives me mad. Like PP said, why do they have to give details in the headline? It spoils it and if I would’ve read the article to find out what happened there’s no point as I can see from the headline so I don’t even click.

The worst is when the headline is ‘SPOILER ALERT! Every detail from the episode and moment of suspense ruined’ above a big picture so that even if you try and scroll past before reading the picture’s given it away too.

I try and avoid the internet if I think things will be spoiled, which must affect sites’ revenue if loads of people avoid news sites/social media until they’ve caught up.

I get especially annoyed when there hasn’t been a single article or post about a show so I don’t think to turn myself into a tech hermit then Boom! Massive spoiler.

UhtredRagnarson · 30/03/2021 03:13

You already heard it all when you saw the spoiler Wink

Netaporter · 30/03/2021 03:14

Was the show unforgotten? I think we all were 😭 at that ending!

Jetsthebestgladiator · 30/03/2021 03:59

Yeah Unforgotten? I watched later on catchup. I seen what the ending was just before. My own fault for going on the internet.

steff13 · 30/03/2021 04:07

I think once it's aired, it's fair game. I was way behind on Supernatural when the finale aired, and I knew I'd have to be ok with being spoiled or stay offline.

Pinchoftums · 30/03/2021 04:16

Try being a football fan who usually has to work on matchdays. (My phone remains off, the radio unturned and then some patient mentions the score....)

Pinchoftums · 30/03/2021 04:18

PS YABVVVU for reading The Scum. The source of so much pain.

TangledUp789 · 30/03/2021 04:21

It’s no longer a spoiler once the episode has aired live on terrestrial TV. It would only be a spoiler if someone had watched a preview tape and posted about it online before broadcast.

I missed Unforgotten when it aired tonight and didn’t watch it until a few hours later. So I made sure to stay away from the Mail Online/Twitter etc during that time, as I knew everyone would be talking about it!

ElphabaTheGreen · 30/03/2021 04:26

YANBU OP. Sometimes it is unavoidable, even if you don’t digress into toilet paper masquerading as journalism like The Sun. No one watches TV in real time these days - it’s perfectly possible to have an article about the end of a show without ruining the outcome for those who haven’t caught up yet.

The BBC News app put on a massive spoiler article the day after a Ru Paul Drag Race UK elimination. I was fuming. I noticed that they’d pulled it pretty rapidly though when I went back to read it later after I’d seen the episode - I suspect they had a lot of spoiler-related complaints!

DS1 came home in a raging mood a few weeks ago. Junior Bake Off is our Saturday morning watch (one episode a week) but in school they watch Newsround every day...where they interviewed the winner. Now he won’t watch it with me Sad

SavingsQuestions · 30/03/2021 04:46

But was it Unforgotten though!? 😲 That ending...

rizzo23 · 30/03/2021 05:31

It was line of duty and the interview was with one cast member. If you opened the page there were no glaring spoilers unless you actually read it.

starrynight21 · 30/03/2021 05:44

You really need to avoid the Internet if it bothers you that much. You can't expect the press or other people to avoid mentioning a show just because you haven't caught up with it yet .

I'm pretty sure it's Unforgotten. I've never seen it, but I went looking after testing this thread and found that The Sun posted an article with a title that says exactly what happens in the finale.
Chanjer · 30/03/2021 07:27

More annoying when it comes up in your suggested articles on your home screen. So even if you're consciously avoiding media sites you can still get mugged

kungfupannda · 30/03/2021 07:35

We are only on series 2 of this and had just finished watching an episode when I went on Twitter and saw a post about the episode that had just aired which made it entirely clear what must have happened. I’d seen a couple of others just saying it was an emotional episode, then this one popped up. It now changes the whole feel of watching it.

Tbf, anyone who is that involved in a TV show that finding out what happens before they watch it upsets them probably needs to ask themselves why.
This is like going back to Free Deirdre. Confused
