AIBU about workmen’s cold drinks

We are having new windows and a front door fitted.
I was out all day with the dog, but when I returned DP said he’d got some cold drinks in for the fitters, as they had been asking for them.
They had been offered and had drunk many cups of tea and coffee, but apparently wanted cold drinks too.
We have lemon squash in the house which they could drink, but they wanted coke and fruit juices.

My DP went to the shop and purchased Coke and Oasis for them.

My thoughts are: they’ve had hot drinks and a suitable cold drink has been offered.
If my DP can go to the shop and purchase drinks, why can’t they?

They worked 9-5 today and will do approx 9-1 tomorrow and we live in a small city, so not long days away from civilisation!

I know it’s not the end of the world, but requesting specific drinks, that we wouldn’t have in the house otherwise, seems a bit much!

Your dh got taken for a ride by cheeky people.

But the reason they are cheeky is because they can get away with it. It’s a sad world we life in when you need skills to fend off pisstakers.

Would you like a drink, we have tea, coffee, lemon squash or water?

Coke please

Sorry we don’t have that. Do you want lemon squash instead?
NOT ok I’ll go buy you some!!!!!

Ilovepotato · 31/03/2021 19:35

I feel so disappointed.

Twoobles · 31/03/2021 19:36

To be fair, most people have Coke in rather than “lemon squash”

No they don't.

The best I could come up with today for an unexpected guest was organic apple juice.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/03/2021 19:56

I never have coke in.

Vimto or orange squash.

cherish123 · 31/03/2021 20:28

They are being cheeky

@Leedsfan247

Always good to look after tradespeople and keep them on side - a few cold drinks - c’mon
You shouldn't need to "keep them on side" ffs. They are being paid for the work they do, that should be enough.
OddBoots · 31/03/2021 20:36

I want lemon squash now but I don't have any, only apple and blackcurrant.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 31/03/2021 20:43

I really fancy a joysexrenovation lemon squash now

BehindMyEyes · 31/03/2021 20:49

@Midlifelady

I would have given them what I had in the house but i wouldn't make a special trip. When I was getting my joysexrenovated I would bring donuts when I visited the site. But soon they were making special requests and I was spending £5-8 a time! I stopped - there was a shop around the corner if they really wanted something they could get it themselves.
Special requests ? Dirty gits ! I know what these tradesmen are like 😂
riceuten · 31/03/2021 21:06

Frankly, as long as the workmen are happy, watered and fed, they will do good work.

Mumsnetters has a bizarre attitude towards workmen. They don't want them to use toilets, drink and eat or listen to the radio. Or make noise. They just magically want work to be done noiselessly by silent and compliant workers making zero demands.

GiftedFish · 31/03/2021 21:16

As a Tradie myself I wouldn't dream of having anyone go to the shop for me. And even if offered tea or coffee most of the time I decline as I carry a water flask but if I do have one and like sometimes customer can get tea wrong I just drink it as it comes I don't make a fuss

GiveTheGirlAGun · 31/03/2021 21:42

We had this. We were having turf laid and DH got home to find 5 cans of an 8 pack of coke missing from the fridge. Anyway, typical bloke he went upstairs to hide and when I got home and went to see the guy doing it, he told me he was very hot and he couldn't help it.
Tea, coffee, still and sparkling water was on offer. DH was flabbergasted since it was his coca-cola. I only have diet and the guy didn't fancy. All cola went upstairs that night.

Namechange1991x · 31/03/2021 21:45

How b*oody rude of them.

winnieanddaisy · 31/03/2021 22:02

My daughter would get different types of fizzy drinks in for them . They would also be fed , usually BLTs . Her thinking is that they will be happy to stay working a full day , instead of sloping off every couple of hours for refreshments.
Tomorrow we have a man coming to fit 6 doors upstairs . It should only take half a day but he will at least be given a bacon butty and a cup of tea or coffee or water or cola etc etc etc

FudgeFlake · 31/03/2021 22:13

Someone upthread wanted to know how to get a thread into Classics.. You Report the OP using the buttons on the right, and in the Reasons bit you say why. Like what I've just done. Because this is the most entertaining thread going off completely sideways for ages Grin

theemmadilemma · 31/03/2021 22:20

Partner gave away a whole 20 pack of coke to workmen in 2 days. On top of tea, coffee etc. I was happy to provide. But the cokes were a bit much really! I suppose it's the same as when I visit an office, I'd expect to be offered the basics but not a choice of cold cans!

MimiDaisy11 · 31/03/2021 22:34

You haven't said how this happened. If your husband asked what they wanted and they said coke and fruit juice and then your husband went out to get them then it's hardly their fault. I find it weird that they requested he go to the shop.

Is paying them not enough to keep them "on side"
ElphabaTheGreen · 31/03/2021 23:06

I am so glad I checked to see why this thread is still rumbling. I’m lying in bed and have tears running into my ears.

You’ll be able to tell an MNer in real life now if you ask her to type ‘house’ into her phone but it autocorrects to ‘joysex’ due to overuse.

Notice the OP has never been back yet no shits are given. The fans want @Midlifelady!

sc0nes4t · 31/03/2021 23:08

To paraphrase Ross from Friends, between all the joysex finger fumbles and bacon sandwiches, I honestly don't know whether I'm hungry or horny.

Harmonypuss · 01/04/2021 02:43

I just RTFT (all 12 pages) and I've laughed so much I needed the loo (tmi, sorry).

But here we are at 12 pages, we've got joysex, slabs of coke, donuts, lemon squash, a stunt pineapple and a carawank, we're concerned about the rigidity of our dwangs/boggings/noggings and @fargonauts is having a joysex finger fiddle!

I'm worried about the structural integrity of my joysex, so, I've come to the conclusion that in order to get my joysex renovated, I need to get a slab of 'coke' (autocorrects as 'come' ☺), some donuts and lemon squash, then have a carawank and ensure that my dwangs are sufficiently rigid before adding the stunt pineapple!

I'm sure my joysex is well overdue for servicing at the very least, so I'm going to get a quote first thing in the morning!

I don’t care if they do any of those things.

What’d I’d care about was being expected to cater to them!

Do they now? We almost never have Coke in and generally only have squash in high summer.

Currently I think we have pink grapefruit leftover from last year. It's not something we drink as a matter of routine.

jontyl · 01/04/2021 07:14

Just googled joysexrenovation...2 results, both mumsnet. Bizarre. A few years ago a customer offered us 2 cans of coke. It was so old it had the openers that come off. Coupled with stale broken biscuits and chipped mugs on another site. You wouldn't treat a dog like that. Of course we thanked her for being so kind. Trades are thankful. A little bit of hospitality to trades goes a long way. Obviously I wouldn't expect customers to go out specially to get drinks but I guess your DH asked them what they would like without realising he didn't have it in. Maybe. We don't have the full story.
