To think an indoor pool is going to cost a fortune?

DH all in favour of buying a house with an indoor pool. I'm more skeptical of the running costs. I'm not even sure where to begin with who is right. We would use it but at what cost!?

My family had an outdoor pool. They heated it for parties and the rest of the summer we swam in it cold. We loved it and became very hardy. We emptied and cleaned it out once a year which was hard work but fun. In the old days we had to hoover it to clean the leaves up which was very slow as if you went too fast it would stir up the dust. Later we got an automatic cleaner. Some summers we spent the whole day in the pool, only coming out to eat and then getting back in again. My mum got some guy to give us swimming lessons and we would invite our friends round for them and he would teach us all these tricks like sitting cross legged on the side and doing forward rolls into the pool. It was magical! Heating it was expensive, the rest of it was mostly our hard work, although to be honest I didn't see the bills! They built it when I was four, we were still swimming in it in our 40s without any major works.

Gemma2019 · 29/03/2021 23:38

We had one roughly that size a few years ago. Doing everything ourselves it still cost £600 per month to run, including heating and chemicals.

AlwaysLatte · 29/03/2021 23:39

We went to look at a house with an indoor pool once and actually the pool was what put me off it! For some reason I find indoor pools really creepy, but maybe I'm odd!
I would also think about the dampness and smell of chlorine, which is bound to pervade other areas unless it's in its own pool house.

NewHouseNewMe · 29/03/2021 23:50

A lot of people install an air source heat pump for an indoor pool and apparently it works a treat. High upfront costs but then delicious year round water.

viques · 29/03/2021 23:50

I stalked a house on rightmove for years, it had an amazing indoor pool, then it got sold ( weep) , so disappeared off the market, then to my shock and amazement it reappeared and they had filled in the pool and turned it into the worlds biggest kitchen . Bastards, that was my pool in my fans
Tasty house.

viques · 29/03/2021 23:51

my fantasy house, but I’ll take tasty house.

Shrivelled · 30/03/2021 00:05

If you need to ask about the cost of running a pool then you can’t afford it.

Ericaequites · 30/03/2021 00:55

Don’t. Pools are money pits. This spring, I plan to take out the pool my parents built 45 years ago, as it receives so little use.

@HairyToity

Can't comment on indoor pool. I love wild swimming, and I've always fancied a natural pool:

We have the land to create it, but not the cash or time to attempt it ourselves. A girl can dream.

Outdoor wild pool!

Dita73 · 30/03/2021 02:49

Never buy a house with a swimming pool. They’re a complete pain in the arse

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 30/03/2021 03:09

I'm absolutely amazed by some of the costs quoted on here! I have an outdoor saltwater pool and it doesn't cost much to run at all. I wouldn't fancy an indoor pool much though, unless in a separate pool house, too smelly. We only get the pool guy out twice a year, to close it for winter and open again in the spring (we are in Oz so get about eight/ nine months a year out of it). Its hooked up to the solar, but I can imagine that might not work in the UK. We test it every two weeks, and buy chemicals as and when needed, but its not very costly, a bag of salt is $11. We did need to buy a new chlorinator last year at $1100, but that's guaranteed for 7 years. It is a bit of a pain to clean, we are probably going to get a robot in the sales, but that isn't exactly a necessity. And I bloody love my pool, everyone told me the novelty would wear off but it gives me a thrill every time I look at it, as I always wanted one. Grin

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 30/03/2021 03:32

Having said all that. its kind of a how long is a piece of string question, costs will vary depending on many factors, size of pool, heated/unheated, indoor/outdoor, chlorine/salt , serviced or not etc etc.

BlackCatShadow · 30/03/2021 03:38

@StrugglingToBeStylish

If it helps, OP, I went to see a house with an indoor pool. Running costs were £20/month plus annual servicing apparently
I'm not sure I'd believe them.
StrugglingToBeStylish · 30/03/2021 07:18

@blackcatshadow

No, I think it’s probably feasible

My husband had a pool growing up as well, his parents are notoriously frugal and apparently it didn’t cost much at all

StrugglingToBeStylish · 30/03/2021 07:20

Nothing wrong with asking if you’re good with money, it’s something you would want to know irrespective of income surely?

justwaydamin · 30/03/2021 08:49

Yes the damp is the other problem. And the cover which cost a fortune when one of the kids (pool) toys got stuck in the retractable roller part. And the cost of having someone come out weekly for maintenance, just the inconvenience of having someone coming to your home every week is annoying when you don't like people generally Grin

When the kids friends come round they always want to go in it and as a PP said you can't just leave them to it. Then you have to supervise and shout 'don't run!' Every 12 seconds because they're so busy bombing then Climbing out to run around and bomb again. Bloody nightmare would never have a pool at the house again.

We were renting that house for 3 years and left because the owner wanted to sell it. FIVE YEARS later the house is still on the market. (Smart) people just don't want a house with a pool unless they're serious swimmers and literally swimming in cash.

Thehop · 30/03/2021 09:12

@SeasonFinale just clutching at straws really 😂

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 30/03/2021 09:15

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo
I know of a 2 bed terraced house that recently had a long thin pool built in the back garden inside a glass retractable structure. I think it’d be very hard to sell but perfect for current owner!
Infinity pool by any chance?

Yes powerful jet and pool about 8m long.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 30/03/2021 09:32

My relatives have just filled in their indoor pool. It was costing about £1000 month to maintain.

Arbadacarba · 30/03/2021 09:42

Just reading because it's always been my fantasy to have a house with a pool (not going to happen unless I win the lottery Grin )

If you have an outdoor pool and only use it in summer (UK), does it need to be heated? You swim in the sea in summer, at least I do if I'm able to get to the sea on a hot day - just wondering why a pool would be different?

LaurieFairyCake · 30/03/2021 09:45

This thread is so weird because of the differences in price Confused

Some are saying it's £30-£100 a month to run their pool

Others are saying £1000-£1300 a month

How can it be so variable Grin

Mercial · 30/03/2021 11:01

I think the costs do wildly vary depending on inside vs outside
Type of fuel used to heat
Air source/ground source heat pump or not
Type of cover
How hot you heat the water to

I'm going to have a pool company come do a check as part of the process and see what they say. We'd definitely get an air source or hear source pump accompanied by solar on the roof of the pool house. I don't mind the up front capital costs but I don't want £500 out the window every month.

OP posts:
Anne1958 · 30/03/2021 11:25

Op, a swimming pool is very expendise to run even when you can afford it let alone when you’re keeping an eye on costs.

Mercial · 30/03/2021 12:27

I don't know if we can afford the running costs hence me asking. As you can see from the answers there's a huge variation in costs. If it's 250 a month that's fine. If it's 1000 that's not fine! I thought it sensible to ask for people that have direct experience.

LegoPirateMonkey · 30/03/2021 12:38

This thread is making me want to move abroad somewhere we could have an outdoor pool that we could go in year-round. It seems like so much hassle to have a pool in the U.K. but it’s my dream to live in a house with one!
