To think an indoor pool is going to cost a fortune?

DH all in favour of buying a house with an indoor pool. I'm more skeptical of the running costs. I'm not even sure where to begin with who is right. We would use it but at what cost!?

My in laws have one and we worked out its £85 for gas per month to heat the pool. Cleaning costs not that much. There are chemicals plus heating costs. It's indoor.

They don't have much money any more but can afford the bills. We use it when we visit but they barely use it so it's probably not heated when they aren't using it so it's going to cost less than £85 per month a lot of the time.

It is nice. Like having a hotel pool to yourself. The kids love it. Family members and friends love it.

We have an indoor pool which is heated with air source heat pump spring and Autumn and solar during summer. Our bills are nowhere near the costs quoted here. We did however have to have the fiberglass restored this winter which set us back 10k and I'm eyeing the rickety 40 year old pool house wondering how much longer that will last... It is absolutely glorious and through last summer we thanked our lucky stars we could be locked down at home. Our electricity bills for a 5 bed detached with air source heat pump for heating and hot water, plus the pool are around 300 a month.

Wherearemymarbles · 29/03/2021 22:21

Depends on the size i guess.
We go on holiday to a place with an indoor pool. Not sure the heating cost but they need to run a 3kw dehumidifier 24 hours a day all year round.

That’s basically £4000 per year just in electricity.

It is a big pool though in a big room.
A friend has an outdoor one. £10,000 to get it relined.

Its often said a house with a pool is worth less than one without.

Coconut2010 · 29/03/2021 22:23

We have quite a large and deep indoor pool and it costs a fortune to heat, it can be as high as £100-150 per week in the winter (but the kids and myself like it at 29 degrees...). Filtration also consumes a lot of electricity. And pretty much every year something does break in the filtration or heating pump (despite having chosen good quality equipment).
Unless money is a non issue for you or you are a passionate swimmer, I would forget it. We’re not passionate swimmers, we just thought it would be a nice to have but we hardly ever use it. We have teenagers and after the initial excitement they are now completely blasé. However for some reason they love their grand parents’ outdoor pool (in a warmer climate, not in the UK), they spend most of the day playing in the water (I think it’s because it’s warmer outside than in our swimming pool room and they can play in and out without feeling cold).

Happytobejabbed · 29/03/2021 22:28

My SIL filled her outdoor pool in. It cost too much to run.

She was also advised that having a pool could make a house hard to sell as potential buyers are likely to be put off by the running costs even though they are initially attractive.

PegasusReturns · 29/03/2021 22:29

I used to rent a house with a pool. No idea what it added to the utility bills, but it needed cleaning 4 times per week and we used a maintenance service which cost about £700pcm.

It was very well fenced but it made me very nervous.

ColourfulElmerElephant · 29/03/2021 22:34

Your running costs will depend upon so much. What’s the size of the pool and where is located? Indoor can be basement, attached to the side, or in its own house in the garden and all will vary. How much water you have in the pool will also have an impact (you don’t need to fill them up if they are deep). How you will be heating it (assuming you will be) etc.

Miasicarisatia · 29/03/2021 22:34

I would worry that an outdoor pool Could attract alligators

Zenithbear · 29/03/2021 22:38

I have two friends with outdoor pools. They have brilliant parties in the spring and summer. I only have a wildlife pond but it's still nice to dip your feet in on a hot day.

tiredmum2468 · 29/03/2021 22:39

There's 2 houses in our area who have pools and both sublet the space for baby and children's and maternity swimming classes/ yoga/ water aerobics to help with the running costs
I'd love the idea if we could afford it then there's the insurance issue for people coming in as we certainly couldn't afford to pay a lifeguard!

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 29/03/2021 22:40

I know of a 2 bed terraced house that recently had a long thin pool built in the back garden inside a glass retractable structure. I think it’d be very hard to sell but perfect for current owner!

thriftyhen · 29/03/2021 22:40

We have a large outdoor pool. I think it depends on how much you want to heat it and whether you look after it yourself or get a pool company to maintain it. I just run the pump every day so that the water filters round. DH does all the chemical stuff and hoovering of it; it's a bit of a hobby for him! I think it's great, but we love swimming, although it's kept covered and isn't used when the leaves are falling off the trees. It's definitely a luxury, but you do have some control over the amount of maintenance you are prepared to do yourself.

I would love to see an alligator

Seems unlikely in England, sadly.

Infinity pool by any chance?
Serin · 29/03/2021 22:51

My friend has a natural swimming pool, I came out with 6 leeches eating me. Hmm.
Another friend has an indoor pool (in a large conservatory) but rents it out to a childrens swim school and makes a profit.

Orphlids · 29/03/2021 22:51

I once worked for a company which built and maintained swimming pools. It was then I decided I would never, ever burden myself with a swimming pool. The relentless efforts that are necessary to run the bloody things as well as the financial burden. Ugh, I’m getting depressed just thinking about it!

Shadowboy · 29/03/2021 22:52

My parents have a heated outdoor pool heated through solar. It cost a fortune to have it built and then they discovered a leak so it was re-tiled and then they had a flood so it filled with silt from the neighbours garden..... anyway my kids love it but I do think was a huge expense for the little use it gets...

Holothane · 29/03/2021 22:54

In my fantasy world I have a pool, indoor, I can dream.

Pamelaaaaa · 29/03/2021 23:01

Surely it will depend massively on the size? Unless it's 25m and you can actually swim in it, it's more a glorified paddling pool for kids. No way would I pay for that but right now I'd give you every penny I own to be able to swim properly in my property.

Are there many alligators wandering the streets of Britain looking for swimming pools?
MzHz · 29/03/2021 23:07

@Mercial are you intending to swim properly? Train?

Then look at an endless pool

Fits in a garage, like a treadmill but for swimmers

All the Team GB swimmers got them over lockdown

They’re great! Honestly amazing

MzHz · 29/03/2021 23:08

I’m a swimmer

I wouldn’t bother fannying about with a 10m pool in a glass house, it would have to be something I could actually swim in.

How much you got?

It’s doable! Wink

ClearMountain · 29/03/2021 23:11

We had one and we filled it in because of the mould, damp and smell of chlorine. An indoor pool needs a detached pool house imo.

Mercial · 29/03/2021 23:17

It's in it's own building but attached to the house if that makes sense. I'd guess at 10m long. Apparently it's 2 meters deep in the deepest part.
