Toddler boys hair

My parents are obsessed with my toddlers hair. Apparently I need to get it cut so he looks like a “real boy”🙄

It’s a mop of blonde curls. Super fine and not even shoulder length.

Surely it’s fine as it is?

I'm with you, my DS is the same. He really likes it as it is so I am not cutting it and upsetting him in order to conform to stupid stereotypes.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/03/2021 18:25

Of course it's fine; of course he's a real boy, he's not Pinocchio is he?

Popskipiekin · 27/03/2021 18:27

DS1 had amazing curls. He was mistaken for a girl a lot, but we loved his hair. We trimmed it when he was 2.5/3 I think.
I’ve been reading too much mumsnet clearly but be careful you don’t leave DS with your parents after the date of hairdressers reopening ....!

HideousKinky · 27/03/2021 18:31

Sounds adorable! Don't cut if you don't want to. Ignore your parents.

FluffyPJs · 27/03/2021 18:32

My son had beautiful strawberry blonde shoulder length curls til he was 7 and a half. No one ever thought he was a girl. He decided to have his hair cut short enough for spikes and I was gutted! He's now 15 and through the first lockdown regrew his hair. He's now got short back and sides and a gorgeous curly mop on top! Ignore anyone who says boys have to have short hair, let your child decide for himself what he wants.

Smurf123 · 27/03/2021 18:32

My ds age 3 hair is far too long atm again not shoulder length but long but hairdressers are all shut and theres no way I can scissor cut it without it looking ridiculous... And no way am I letting dh do a buzz cut that would be far too short for him imo
I wouldn't worry about them.. I'm ignoring mine 🙈

peekiboo · 27/03/2021 18:34

YANBU. DS had long curly locks until 4. 4 years of constant sniping from DPs and DPILs. We've cut it shorter at his request now he's older but we miss his gorgeous curls. Funny how we've had no comments from anyone re DDs long curly hair Hmm

Eileen101 · 27/03/2021 18:35

YADNBU. Don't cut it of you don't want to (and if he doesn't).
My 3 year old had stunning blonde curls after lockdown and yes, was often told what a good girl he was.
We had it cut, and DH was often a bit grumpy after I took him for trims that it "looked no different", and I was really gutted after. It's growing back well so if it curls in the same way, I'm not having it cut. Until he wants to of course.

Sexnotgender · 27/03/2021 18:36

He’s only just 2 so not able to decide for himself yet. Virtually every time I FaceTime them it gets mentioned! Just checking I wasn’t crazy.

We buzzcut ours as he looks ridiculous with long hair. Each to their own. I would simply bat back with "what's a real boy?" - hours of awkward entertainment

Happycat1212 · 27/03/2021 18:45

Wait till he goes to school he will get called a girl then. Happens to my son with long hair

traintrain · 27/03/2021 18:45

OP, I feel you, they provide my childcare and without fail, multiple times per week they tell me that he needs a hair cut.

For a start, no he doesn’t. Secondly, everything’s shut and thirdly, I’m not doing it myself.

It’s not even long though! Like more a halo of baby curls. It’s not even anywhere near his shoulders.

My 2 year old has gorgeous girls - I’m never having his hair cut (until he goes to school cos I’m not getting a bit comb through that 😂)

Namechangeforspring2021 · 27/03/2021 18:53

*nit

Namechangeforspring2021 · 27/03/2021 18:54

And curls not girls ffs 🤦🏻‍♀️

Confused do you live somewhere very unmodern? None of mine ever had this said to them.

Neither did the boys with long hair when I was at school - except for a few thickos who everyone ignored anyway.

PerspicaciousGreen · 27/03/2021 18:57

Totally up to you. If he'll let you wash it and brush it and keep it clean and tidy, do whatever you like. So many toddler boys have gorgeous curly locks! My dad comments on literally every zoom call how much hair both of ours have, even though it's a totally normal amount and they saw it last week too!

Happycat1212 · 27/03/2021 18:57

Live in London, he’s been called a girl loads of times, had to even complain to the school as they kept telling him he wasn’t allowed in the boys toilets because “he is a girl” I don’t think it’s unusual actually!

InsideNumberNine · 27/03/2021 19:02

My DS4 has never had his hair cut. It's way past his shoulders and gorgeous. He often gets called a girl but he has quite a pretty face too which adds to it. I won't cut it until he wishes to. He absolutely doesn't now.

I have honestly had none of this with mine, just asked the ones who are here.
853ax · 27/03/2021 19:07

I trim bottom to toddlers curls, as if they get too long/heavy the curls go.
To keep them longer I trim little bit from bottom often.
As hair gets thicker harder my 4yo will need a 'proper boy haircut' soon, my heart will break but it annoying him now he wants it shorter.

Tillytwilight · 27/03/2021 19:08

I like a nice sweeping fringe and short around back and sides for my toddler DS. DH prefers him with lockdown long blonde curls, which makes him look like a cherub and I really don’t like it. Counting down till hairdressers open!

HavelockVetinari · 27/03/2021 19:08

It's (sadly) a class wars thing - middle class kids often have longer hair, working class usually v short. So it depends on the predominant class where your DC go to school.*

  • Yes, I'm aware that the British are obsessed with class, yes, it's really shite, but that's how we are at the moment. It gets less important for each generation thankfully.
Happycat1212 · 27/03/2021 19:13

Well seems it’s happened to others on this thread, though his hair is long (past his shoulders) not just curly.
