That isn't good enough?!

I entered the Motorway services at 9pm
Because I needed to use the loo. I stopped at Birch services on the m62. This really isn't good enough to me, this is the sight I encountered, walking into the female toilets. A propped open door to the lorry park round the back of the service station. Propped open with a crate, I closed the door because frankly I didn't feel safe using the loo with that door open and I told the service station staff afterwards that I'd closed the door and they told me it was left open so people who park round the back of the service station don't have to walk round the building and can just nip into the Female toilet and go through there into the service station to access the service station facilities.

Aibu to expect men to walk round and not through the ladies toilets to access the gents/ Costa whatever ?

That isn't good enough?!

They would face some quite hefty fines for having a fire door propped open like that, so if nothing else that should motivate them to do something about it. But from a personal safety point of view, it’s absolutely unacceptable.

ChillyB · 27/03/2021 08:43

Also report it to their local fire service fire safety team - they are the people who inspect against fire regulations and will be interested in this from that perspective.

ThreeB · 27/03/2021 08:45

YADNBU - that's appalling. I'd go down the route of reporting it to the council H&S enforcement team. It's a breach of H&S regs and the disregard they are showing for safety in this one area is probably replicated in other breaches across the site.

Iamthewombat · 27/03/2021 08:49

The majority owner of Moto (Birch is a Moto service station) is the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). USS is the pension scheme for university staff.

That is where I’d be directing my complaint. You are more likely to get a sympathetic response than you would if you complain to the CEO of Moto, although I’d do that too.

The Moto business is run on the cheap (I’ve had professional dealings with them) and their strategy is to spend as little as possible on infrastructure and staffing. As you have seen at Birch.

@Iamthewombat thank you!

Ludicrous

I’d complain to everyone I could think of, fire services, council, insurance company if i could work out who it was, police? Would the police be interested? Unlikely 😀

But yeah deffo complain

Lalliella · 27/03/2021 09:12

Totally wrong. Why don’t they prop open the door to the men’s loo as lorry drivers are predominantly male?

TheJerkStore · 27/03/2021 09:18

This is outrageous!
Absolutely report it.

STARmyarse · 27/03/2021 09:22

My god, imagine a parent letting their child go in to use the loo and then never coming back out cos they’ve either ran into the car park or been taken. It doesn’t bear (bare?) thinking about and 100% sounds like the type of missing child stories that we hear and are never solved.

Terrible.

Notabs · 27/03/2021 09:26

@STARmyarse Yes that’s a great point, a child could easily run out etc 😢 Plus the fact it is a women’s toilet with men going through. Please OP report it to everyone you can and also I would post about this on social media because it needs attention immediately 😢 xx

BarbaraofSeville · 27/03/2021 09:28

Worth pointing out when you complain that it's the lorry park that the door opens onto, so even worse risk to child safety due to larger vehicles and worse visibility.

Iamthewombat · 27/03/2021 09:43

Some idiot with half a brain probably got asked if it’s ok to do for the lorry drivers and said yes.

Undoubtedly this. Where was the duty manager in this? Either he/she is incompetent and doesn’t know what is happening or it was him/her who authorised it. Neither explanation is particularly edifying. It will be something ridiculous like, they wanted to make sure that the drivers could get to the fruit machines easily without - shock - having to walk around the building.

midnightstar66 · 27/03/2021 10:10

Agree to shout about this on social media. Although I'm sore management will blame a staff member but it will hopefully get it stopped ASAP.

LaceyBetty · 27/03/2021 10:13

That's really scary. Agree about sending my 8 year old daughter in alone thinking she'd have to come out the way she went in!

CounsellorTroi · 27/03/2021 10:14

Totally out of order. I would assume the main entrance has CCTV. Why hand people an opportunity to walk in without being seen?

IsAnybodyListening · 27/03/2021 10:51

The picture alone suggests the opening of a horror film. As other posters have said it is completely outrageous.

Report it to Head office!!

I would also make a report to the local fire department as it breaches fire safely............they might decide to "inspect"

Wishitsnows · 27/03/2021 11:00

Yes definitely complain to as many areas as you can think of including head office and put it on social media. This is really shocking

NoSquirrels · 27/03/2021 11:00

@PurpleDaisies

Maybe they’ve done it to increase ventilation to reduce covid transmission risk? I’m not saying that it’s a good idea though.
The staff told OP why they’d done it- I did shut the door! The staff re propped it open as they said that lorry drivers and people who park round the back should be allowed to access the service station from The back car park ie the ladies toilets.
Wishitsnows · 27/03/2021 11:00

Good shout on fire safety

midnightstar66 · 27/03/2021 11:05

Maybe they’ve done it to increase ventilation to reduce covid transmission risk?
I’m not saying that it’s a good idea though.

Except that they clearly communicated that wasn't the reason.

PurpleDaisies · 27/03/2021 11:10

Thanks @NoSquirrels, I missed that. Blush

MrsSpringyTheElephant · 27/03/2021 11:14

What the actual fuck?! Surely this can't be legal?! I have no actual words, I am just shocked!

PandaFluff · 27/03/2021 11:18

I don't understand why people who park around the back can't go around to the front and use the entrance everyone else uses which probably has security cameras. This is just asking for something horrendous to happen.
