Is Reddit always strict?

Zig27 · 26/03/2021 21:03

I joined a Reddit forum and was banned for 1 day by a moderator saying that only people of that occupation are allowed to comment on that forum. The discussion was nothing to do with the occupation and more to do with someone's emotions overwhelming them which I was trying to reassure them.

I also posted a month ago asking what the profession was like as it was something I wanted to go into but wanted other opinions and the post was refused by the moderators saying it is not appropriate to ask questions about the profession. Why would I go into a profession without finding out what it is about?

I am finding it very strict and being silenced or a cancel culture going on. It's funny as some of the 'professionals' who do comment give some very bad advice and can start arguing with other professionals on there.

It's probably just that sub reddit. Each Reddit sub has its own set of rules that the mods oversee

Strangekindofwoman · 26/03/2021 21:10

It all depends on the mods. Most subs have their own rules as well as the general Reddit rules.

unvillage · 26/03/2021 21:12

"being silenced" Grin You broke the rules! Reddit subs have the rules on full display, you need to read them. I bet there's a dozen other subs for similar subjects where you can ask your questions.

Zig27 · 26/03/2021 21:16

@unvillage I think if the subs are part of that profession I don't want to go into a profession with people like that who don't respect others.

This is not what cancel culture is at all! Read the rules before you post.

letsghostdance · 26/03/2021 21:18

And it would be absolute madness to decide not to go into a profession based on an experience on a subreddit! Of all things!?

UneAstuce · 26/03/2021 21:19

What profession is this?

Zig27 · 26/03/2021 21:24

@ letsghostdance I did read the rules and it does not saying anything about not being allowed to post if you are considering the profession.

They don’t want to put people off the profession. The fact they have something to hide made me thinks it’s not the right profession.

It’s a subreddit, not a professional association...

letsghostdance · 26/03/2021 21:29

What could they possibly have to hide? I think that you're taking this a wee bit personally. It's fairly standard on subreddits to not be allowed to ask certain things. For example, if it's for people in that profession maybe they don't want to speak to people who are just looking, they want to discuss things specific to the profession. Have a look in the sidebar of the subreddit, there might be a linked one where you can ask questions like that.

Sparklesocks · 26/03/2021 21:31

I don’t think being banned from a single part of Reddit is equivalent to being ‘cancelled’.

DimidDavilby · 26/03/2021 21:35

Go on tell us the profession

CloudFormations · 26/03/2021 21:35

It could just as easily be said that you were the one who was disrespectful by posting on a sub without taking the time to learn the rules first.

All subreddits have rules, usually to stop them from being overwhelmed by posts which aren’t the kind of content their followers want to engage with. They are usually easy to find, so it’s just a case of you checking what the rules are before you post so that you follow them correctly.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 26/03/2021 21:39

This is Reddit. Each sub-Reddit is self-moderated, with clear rules, and you can expect to be muted or removed if you break them. They enforce rules strictly.

It’s not silencing or cancel culture. Reddit is known as the “front page of the internet”. If the sub Reddits aren’t moderated, they become useless and unusable, just from sheer volume of posts...

It sounds like this isn’t the sub-Reddit for you, if they don’t want people who aren’t in that area from commenting. You can watch the discussions and make an opinions based on those, or find another sub Reddit and ask there Smile

You know Reddit is a private company right? They can have whatever rules they want

therocinante · 26/03/2021 21:56

So you broke the rules of a sub that is allowed to choose its own rules, and based off the fact that you were removed as a result of breaking the rules you've decided you've been cancelled and also that you won't go into this mysterious profession because you think one part of a forum is representative of it and is somehow suspicious?

Seems like a totally normal response.

Zig27 · 26/03/2021 22:06

I have already said it before. There are no rules on there saying you cannot post otherwise I wouldn’t have posted. I think I will just observe from now on. I don’t need to be threatened by their moderators.

OP posts:
Strangekindofwoman · 26/03/2021 22:07

Why don't you message the mods and ask them?

Thenanny23 · 26/03/2021 22:14

As has been said every sub Reddit has its own rules.

I would say more generally I’m in some professional groups on facebook and WhatsApp etc; whilst well meaning it is irritating to get frequent posts and messages from people wanting to ask questions about the job, when the aims are more for peer to peer support, debate, and sharing research. There are other avenues in order to find out about the job itself.

therocinante · 26/03/2021 22:19

But they haven't threatened you, have they? They just told you they didn't want you to post. Unless this profession is something sketchy - are you trying to join a guild of assassins? - I think you're taking this far too seriously.

Zig27 · 26/03/2021 22:31

I understand what you are saying as they just want like minds to respond. They say join the UKCareers sub and ask in their but it is private and cannot be joined. I just don’t want to spend thousands retraining and hate the new career.

What's the profession?

Graciebobcat · 27/03/2021 07:18

Reddit does seem to have loads of rules. Probably to deter trolls, but it just deters humans who want to dip their toe in the water to see what it is all about. Can't be arsed with it.
