Is Reddit always strict?

I joined a Reddit forum and was banned for 1 day by a moderator saying that only people of that occupation are allowed to comment on that forum. The discussion was nothing to do with the occupation and more to do with someone's emotions overwhelming them which I was trying to reassure them.

I also posted a month ago asking what the profession was like as it was something I wanted to go into but wanted other opinions and the post was refused by the moderators saying it is not appropriate to ask questions about the profession. Why would I go into a profession without finding out what it is about?

I am finding it very strict and being silenced or a cancel culture going on. It's funny as some of the 'professionals' who do comment give some very bad advice and can start arguing with other professionals on there.

Ah so I'm going to guess it was r/teachingUK

The 3rd rule is:

  1. This subreddit is not a career clinic
r/TeachingUK isn't a careers service. We can't offer advice tailored to your precise circumstances. This includes questions like:

should I become a teacher...

Seems pretty clear to me. Yes, they recommend UKcareers but the fact that it's currently closed doesn't mean you can post on teachingUK anyway. If you asked in a shop to use the toilet and they said 'no but there's a public toilet in the library over the road' that doesn't mean you can go 'Its shut so I'm pissing here!' if you find out the library is closed 😕 YABU

Are you new to the internet?

I understand that, they signposted me to the careers one but I found it was private. I think something has happened in the press about other groups going private out of protest for an incident that happened.

I will just speak to people in real life. It's a waste of time phoning the Getting into Teaching hotline or speaking to universities as they just want to recruit people to get their money.

Try the Staffroom on MN or the TES forums.

Zig27 · 27/03/2021 12:34

@PaulineScrambledPhones

Thanks for the suggestions. They closed the TES forums in December 2020 - I don't know why.

Plenty of teachers on MN - just post here.

(Teacher training places at uni are limited btw - they certainly aren't desperate for your fees!)

Reddit isn't for serious discussions. I'm on a political sub, and it's full of cop haters, impossibilist Trots and Momentum. Its only good quality is that it's not official.

I mostly use it as a manual for Elite Dangerous, IAF, and arguments about the regional names for bread rolls.

So why didnt you just apply?

I hope overreacting and going on about "cancel culture" over one tiny issue you have aren't dealbreakers in this new profession you're going for.

NotMineToTell · 15/06/2021 18:15

@Denny19889 Promoting your dodgy website is against the rules. I've reported your post.

Myrighteyeball · 15/06/2021 21:57

OP, you are thinking of not entering a profession you have spent 'thousands' training for based on the attitude of some Reddit mods.

This indicates that you are currently too sensitive to criticism to be an effective teacher.

I suggest you seek some CBT or other therapy to help you develop your resilience.
