AIBU to ask my daughter's primary to school to not hold their non-Uniform day next Thursday to collect money for the National Autistic Society

I know its a pain to change dates and there are bigger issues etc. But seriously! Using April Fools day to collect for individuals that often struggle with humour and are often picked on as the butt of jokes just seems extraordinarily insensitive. I have 3 autistic spectrum children and they don't think this is funny!

For fuck’s sake you will make yourself look a right fool if you complain about this!

ZombieEthel · 26/03/2021 17:32

I suggest people read the full thread before commenting aggressively and swearing at a mother who was just trying to protect her kids.

This!

How the hell is a non uniform day at the end of the term ‘taunting’ your son??

eatsleepread · 26/03/2021 17:48

The OP knows she's in the wrong, and I don't think she needs the point hammered home any more.
Happy weekend, OP!

Shoppingwithmother · 26/03/2021 17:59

There are only 30 posts on the thread, and it was a pretty fast turn around from the OP so I don’t think people can be blamed for just quickly posting their opinion. That is what AIBU is after all.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 26/03/2021 18:04

oneineight
Yes that’s what I thought the OP was going to be about when it started.

Christmasfairy2020 · 26/03/2021 18:06

Schools broke up today?? Well mine have anyways

Submariner · 26/03/2021 18:09

To be honest I thought this was going to be a thread objecting to fundraising for NAS in light of the Mendip House scandal.

Comefromaway · 26/03/2021 18:12

Both my kids used to have major meltdowns on non uniform days as they couldn’t cope with the change/rules so it’s a bit of an insensitive fundraiser.

Mumofsend · 26/03/2021 18:14

Definitely overthinking. April is autism awareness month, makes sense to mark the start of it

memememe · 26/03/2021 18:26

i find it ironic that they are doing a non uniform day. thats the day my autistic kids suffer with most. school has uniform, not home clothes. well at least its not dressing up!

Onairjunkie · 26/03/2021 18:32

Being hypersensitive to non-issues will not help your kids. At all. Do not project this onto them.

NotAPanda · 26/03/2021 18:43

Your being dumb and all these awareness days are stupid
I hate them with a passion
Especially since there are acceptable and non acceptable autistic people
And autistic girls have extra dumb shit to do that autistic boys don’t get away with
Why is a special interest in STEM and autism hyper focus great but not a special interest in dolls people and dresses
Sincerely
Autistic girl (and her autistic BF)

Brieminewine · 26/03/2021 18:45

Get a grip OP 😂

Anne1958 · 26/03/2021 18:58

I don’t know why people are continuing to be unkind to the Op who’s the mother of 3 children who are on the spectrum and is going through a hard time right now.

cansu · 26/03/2021 19:08

I have two autistic children and would not make this association at all. I would be celebrating the fact that the school have chosen to raise awareness of autism. Making a fuss about this would be ridiculous.

ZombieEthel · 26/03/2021 19:20

Indeed. People are getting really nasty now. Whether or not you agree with the OP's concerns - and I happen to think she was overthinking the issue - there's no need to be nasty, swear at her or tell her to get a grip.
littlepattilou · 26/03/2021 19:24

YABU @Wills Smile and overthinking it (as some posters said.) Glad you decided against complaining, and I hope your children and all the others have a fab day! Grin

Emeraldshamrock · 26/03/2021 19:31

The DC love to wear their own clothes, they are a day early as off school the following day.
I don't think there is a connection towards it being a day of jest.

OrangeSamphire · 26/03/2021 19:33

The whole concept of a ‘non uniform day’ for my autistic child always led to anxiety, stress and an inability to actually go to school that day.

A non uniform day is not the best way to show understanding of neurodiversity. At all!

It's not an awareness day. They're simply donating the money raised to autism charities.

It might be nice to be charitable yourself and appreciate that they're helping charities that I imagine you would support.

OrangeSamphire · 26/03/2021 19:47

It might surprise you to hear @saraclara that many autistic people do not support the work of the NAS.

And ‘it might be nice’ if schools and other organisations who want to support autistic people did it in such a way that wasn’t distressing.

Lindy2 · 26/03/2021 19:52

As the parent of a child with ASD you are over thinking this.

April Fool's day is really a non event.

It's the end of term, a bit of a fun thing for the kids and a financial benefit for the autistic society. That's all that matters.

Winifredgoose · 26/03/2021 19:55

I also have a child with autism and I don't see that the two things need to be connected. It is the last day of term and they are dressing up to raise money. April fools day is a v v minor 'celebration' in the calendar that goes largely unnoticed.
