Fucking mouth ulcer

Cocothecat42 · 26/03/2021 07:56

I don't get them often but when I do they wipe me out. Headaches, sore eyes, swollen glands, it's like they make me genuinely unwell.

Dp doesn't get it, says its 'just' a mouth ulcer. What causes them? What even are they? Why do they make me feel so bloody awful?!

Am using mouthwash daily but I don't rate any of the topical ointments like bonjela or igloo they just make it worse. Anyone else suffer badly from them? I feel like I have permanent headache until it starts to get better and am taking paracetamol 4 hourly.

Try putting a bicarbonate of soda paste directly on it. Tastes horrible and stings so much but the stinging is very short lived and the relief is almost immediate.
Mine don't sound anywhere near as bad as yours though. You have my sympathy.

Smashmallow · 26/03/2021 08:02

Sometimes a B vitamin deficiency. If they don't clear up in a few weeks you should get to your dentist and get them checked out.

itsasmallworldafterall · 26/03/2021 08:04

Is it possible you get the mouth ulcers when you are run down , rather than them causing the other symptoms? Try corlan pellets. Visit your GP for a full blood count if you suffer from then often. Contact your dentist if any ulcer lasts more than 3 weeks.

randomer · 26/03/2021 08:05

Strong solution of salt water, gargle.

Skigal86 · 26/03/2021 08:05

I had one recently that just wouldn’t go and someone suggested switching to an SLS free toothpaste (most of the sensodyne ones are) and within 24 hours it was so much better and gone in a couple of days.

Mxflamingnoravera · 26/03/2021 08:11

Aphthous ulcers sometimes need antibiotics to help them heal fully. If you are getting the full body reaction you mention it might be worth asking the dr or dentist to prescribe an antibiotic.

gmailconfusion2 · 26/03/2021 08:16

I supplement folic acid which seems to help as I used to get them so much and they were about the size of a 5p piece. Since taking supplements I very very rarely get any

HipHopBanzai · 26/03/2021 08:17

I suffer badly with ulcers. Yes to the corlan pellets mentioned up thread, they definitely help. Changing to a SLS free toothpaste has made a huge difference for me though.

Cocothecat42 · 26/03/2021 10:48

Whenever I get one it's always the same symptoms. This isn't particularly worse than any others I've had, I just seem to suffer badly when they occur.

Thanks for the tips all xx

I think its worth a trip to your GP when you have one for a check over - sometimes mouth ulcers are a symptom of other things going on which are worth ruling out

VestaTilley · 26/03/2021 10:53

I get them a lot. I have an autoimmune disease- they often go hand in hand.

Ask your GP for blood tests to check your immune function.

I gargle with salt water (then spit it out, don’t swallow it!) which helps a lot.

I get them when I’m run down/stressed/tired.

AntiSocialDistancer · 26/03/2021 10:55

Dont continually take a corsydol mouthwash, only use it when you have an outbreak.

Anbesol liquid NOT gel is magic. Completely numbing, worth it in mean time.

And yes I would speak to GP

Pikachan · 26/03/2021 10:55

I also find igloo and bonjela don’t help much. Have you tried anbesol (the liquid, not the gel)? It’s the only thing that works for me.

CommanderBurnham · 26/03/2021 10:55

I take ibuprofen as it is anti inflammatory and gives pain relief.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/03/2021 10:56

Have you recently had a Covid vaccine? I know two people who developed mouth ulcers within a week of having their first dose. Nothing like as bad as yours though.

May be a complete coincidence of course. I didn't have one myself.

SwanShaped · 26/03/2021 11:05

I agree with the anbesol liquid. It stings like fuck when you first put it on but then numbs completely for a bit. Your ulcers sound awful. I find sugar gives me mine.

Aweebawbee · 26/03/2021 11:38

There used to be a fantastic product called Adcortyl that was a steroid paste for ulcers. It didn't just kill the pain, it killed the ulcer. For some reason it was discontinued in the UK (the line wasn't making enough profit I guess) and there were a lot of complaints. However, you can still get a similar product in Australia called Kenalog. Maybe available online?

Mxflamingnoravera · 27/03/2021 13:41

You can get orobase from pharmacies. I still have a tube of acortodyl!

zingally · 27/03/2021 14:01

I used to get perhaps 4 bad ulcers a year.

Then I had an (unrelated) nasty tongue infection that caused me to have a severe sensitivity to mint - making most toothpastes intolerable.
I was recommended a flavourless toothpaste, which is also free from SLS (the foaming agent in toothpaste).
This was maybe 3-4 years ago, and I haven't had a single mouth ulcer since.

zingally · 27/03/2021 14:02

Forgot to add, the toothpaste is called Oranurse. I get it from Amazon. It's about £3 a tube.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 27/03/2021 14:26

I have always suffered with mouth ulcers. It turns out they are part of an underlying autoimmune issue so worth getting them investigated. In terms of treatment, ambesol liquid is great for numbing the pain (but hurts like hell for about 10 seconds). Zinc supplements are also meant to work.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 27/03/2021 14:32

Have you tried gargling with hydrogen peroxide?
I don't get mouth ulcers, but apparently its good for those too (I use it for sore throats).

It cleanses the ulcer and reduces the bacteria in your mouth and tastes so disgusting you'll forget about the sore throat/ulcer/whatever
Available in most chemists at 3% or 6% solution - you need to dilute it further, but there'll be instructions on the bottle. I don't think it's controlled, but you need to ask the pharmacist/assistant, unlikely to be displayed. Quite cheap - c. £1 I think.

Agree with PPs that the ulcers could be induced by something else - anemia, other vitamin deficiencies or stress- that also causes your other symptoms, rather than the other symptoms being caused by the ulcer, worth getting checked out with your GP.

Xyzzzzz · 27/03/2021 14:32

I get them all the time too. I have three atm. I use difflam mouthwash that helps

happinessischocolate · 27/03/2021 14:38

My dd used to get them all the time, the doctor said it's a sign of vitamin deficiency so now she takes multivitamins and hasn't had any for a couple of years.

FlorenceandtheWashingMachine · 27/03/2021 14:41

Ex used to suffer until I read somewhere that eating sunflower seeds works. It did for him!
