To really not want to take a taxi during COVID

Jillybons · 24/03/2021 19:49

I know there are bigger problems!

But my car needs to go to the garage for a few days and I’m still required to be in the office. Going to have to take a taxi but feel super nervous about it 🙁 AIBU?

YABVU

Twoforthree · 24/03/2021 19:52

No she's not. I would be too.

But needs must.

PinkPlantCase · 24/03/2021 19:53

I wouldn’t want to either. Could you cycle? I might consider a hire car depending how long it’ll be for.

Sirzy · 24/03/2021 19:55

Hire a car for a few days then?

middleager · 24/03/2021 19:56

Can you check if they have perspex divider and drivers wear a mask?

You can keep the window open and take wipes, along with wearing your mask.

Happycat1212 · 24/03/2021 19:56

Lol what do you think about people that have to get the bus 🤣 get a grip

Suzi888 · 24/03/2021 19:59

YANBU covid is rife amongst taxi drivers if the isolation payments are anything to go by. Could you work from home or take leave?
I’d rather catch a bus. We’ve staff members who travel by train and bus every day and none have caught covid.

feellikeanalien · 24/03/2021 19:59

I've had to take a fairly long taxi journey (30/40) minutes when my car was at the garage. There was a perspex screen and the driver was wearing a mask. I pre-booked and paid using the firm's app so didn't have to deal with cards or cash. As another pp has suggested can't you maybe hire a car or does the garage have a courtesy car?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 24/03/2021 19:59

Yeah. You need to sort your anxiety.

I’m typing this from the tube which I’ve been taking twice a day since the start.

Sorry but the pandemic has turned a lot of people into nervous wrecks, and it’s totally unnecessary to be this terrified for the vast, vast majority.

FolkSongSweet · 24/03/2021 20:04

Not sure where you are but I’m in London and wouldn’t use Uber, but Addison Lee and black cabs have Perspex between passenger and driver, and you can wind the windows down. I think that’s perfectly safe and have taken multiple taxis over the past year as don’t have a car and have had a load of medical appointments and given birth.

FelicityBeedle · 24/03/2021 20:07

If you’re a key worker (or just persuasive) you can ask for a courtesy car, they won’t be advertising it but lots of garages are still doing them. DP got one the other week

ssd · 24/03/2021 20:08

Just open the windows.

Ted27 · 24/03/2021 20:10

I dont drive and use taxis regularly, at least once a week, and have continued to do so throughout the pandemic.
The drivers wear masks, if they cars ( as opposed to black cabs) there has usually been a plastic screen behind the front seats.
I havent had Covid, don’t see what what the issue is

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/03/2021 20:11

Get the tube?

I've been getting the bus every day into a city centre along with thousands of others. I think you're being unnecessarily anxious

SmidgenofaPigeon · 24/03/2021 20:36

Two years ago you’d have merrily hopped into a taxi with no thought on whether the driver might have a cold, or a stomach bug, or any other kind of virus. Now you’re worried covid is going to jump out at you from the driver’s seat. You’ll both be wearing a mask. You can wash your hands. Try not to touch your face.

Its not worth this amount of aggro, honestly.

SquigglePigs · 25/03/2021 06:18

I sympathise OP. I wouldn't want to do it either. We changed the garage we took our car to so we could walk home rather than get a taxi across our city. Having said that, in reality the risk is low if you take precautions so sometimes you need to do things that make you uncomfortable.

Cadent · 25/03/2021 06:38

YABU. Get a grip. It’s no different to all the people getting buses. Having to get a taxi for work does not make you special but means you’re safer!

TimeQuest01 · 25/03/2021 06:39

I think many local cab drivers that do school runs for the council got the jab weeks ago.

I think this could mean a lower risk of transmission and might make you feel a bit more relaxed.

I would call around my local cab companies and ask.

Roselilly36 · 25/03/2021 06:45

@SmidgenofaPigeon totally agree, complete madness.
