Same marigolds for bathroom and rest of house?

Justanotherworkingmom · 24/03/2021 15:46

Trying to work out if I'm being OTT or if my friend is just a bit gross.

I religiously wear different pairs of marigolds for doing the dishes, cleaning the bathroom and doing other stuff around the house, to the point where I even have different colour gloves for each task. I also find the idea of reusing the same gloves for the bathroom a bit grim, so will only use disposables for the loo or anything else like that.

One of my friends thinks this is OTT and, while she doesn't wear gloves for the dishes, wears the same pair for (e.g.) cleaning her bathroom and other chores within the house (e.g. cleaning windows, laundry etc).

Who is being weird?

YABU = Fine to use same pair for different stuff
YANBU = No, that's gross!

Never worn gloves to clean in the house! I just take my rings off and wash my hands when I'm done.

RubyFakeLips · 24/03/2021 16:21

I voted YABU but it depends how many categories of glove we're talking.

I have blue for loos, pink for bathrooms and yellow for the kitchen/general.

We do have some black gloves for awful jobs but think it pretty horrendous you're using disposable gloves, I would be ashamed. This year has proven thorough handwashing is effective, so I just wash the gloves between uses.

I wouldn't wear gloves to do laundry or handle food though.

makesIlaugh · 24/03/2021 16:30

@Wilkolampshade

I use the same pair of bare hands for everything.
And me...
ilikebungalows · 24/03/2021 16:30

I only wear marigolds for cleaning the kitchen and cleaning the bathroom. I keep the bathroom pair in the bathroom and the kitchen pair in the kitchen, I would NEVER use the bathroom ones to clean the kitchen.Yuk. I also keep another pair in the garage for use outside as necessary.

Okbye · 24/03/2021 16:36

Not unreasonable at all.

I have kitchen gloves and bathroom gloves. I think it’s gross to use the same ones that’ve been used to clean the toilets to then wash up dishes, mugs, cutlery etc with 🤢🤮

Your thick gloves long last than thin gloves, but you'll have to throw them away and weight per weight, it might not be that different.
Even using disposable gloves, I probably generate less glove waste than you do, as I rarely wear gloves anyway.

Except in the lab. You wouldn't believe the amount of plastic waste we generate.

Lweji · 24/03/2021 16:38

last longer, fgs

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 24/03/2021 16:39

I'm not a germaphobe at all. I'm quite average tbh. I'll use marigolds to do the dishes, and I might keep them on while I wipe down the sideboard in the living room or something.

BUT I do keep a different pair of marigolds in the bathroom cabinets for use in the bathroom.

I do not use the same ones at the kitchen sink for dishes and then take them upstairs later to plunge them into the loo + seat....that's just grim.

I'm shocked that the vote is pretty 50/50!!!!

Lordamighty · 24/03/2021 16:41

I use different colours, yellow for bathrooms, pink for the kitchen sink.

stuckinarutatwork · 24/03/2021 16:46

I used my yellow ones for washing dishes and cleaning windows.
I have a green-blue pair for the bathroom. I reuse them but only for use in the bathroom.

Marylou62 · 24/03/2021 16:46

When I read this type of question I always wonder how we coped in ye olden days! And I really dispare for the planet because of all the disposable products.. I know a person who buys eco this, eco that, won't use tumble dryer, organic food. But uses disposable gloves...for every little house hold chore, changing between each chore.. As I said I dispare..

XenoBitch · 24/03/2021 16:47

I use my hands. How can I change them?

FlyingBurrito · 24/03/2021 16:49

YABU to say marigolds, either you only ever use one specific brand and you mean Marigolds or you mean any brand of rubber glove in which case you should say rubber glove, marigold in this context isn't a thing.

ChazP · 24/03/2021 16:53

One pair of marigolds for cleaning out the guinea pig cage.
Bare hands for everything else.

I think the vote is pretty 50/50 because of the number of different categories the OP mentions. Using the same pair for dishes & toilet is grim, but having different ones for the sink, the windows, etc is too much.
tangerinelollipop · 24/03/2021 17:01

YANBU OP

Using kitchen gloves to clean the bathroom is gross

Lweji · 24/03/2021 17:05

Proper hand washing reduces the risk of pathogen transmission, but we do not usually wash hands to surgeon standards.
When we handle raw chicken for example, it is easy to get dirt under the nails that can be difficult to wash without scrubbing with a nail brush. Plus washing hands (or gloves) can spread Salmonella around. That is why I prefer to wear disposable gloves to handle whole raw chicken, which is difficult to handle with tongs or forks.
They are also latex gloves, which are biodegradable and made from trees without destroying them. Nitrile gloves are too, but take longer to degrade, btw. So, some people may want to calm down about their environmental impact.

RoseMartha · 24/03/2021 17:39

I have one pair of marigolds for washing up

If I have to handle anything grim will use latex gloves.

Otherwise use my hands and wash thoroughly after.

CounsellorTroi · 24/03/2021 17:41

I wouldn't wear my washing up gloves to clean the toilet, no!

Justanotherworkingmom · 24/03/2021 18:11

@RubyFakeLips Similar here:

Washing up/tidying kitchen - Pink long sleeve gloves
Bathroom - Green marigolds
Other housework - Yellow “silky” gloves
Garden - Black heavy gloves

Only use disposables pretty rarely eg scrubbing toilet, and agree it isn’t ideal environmentally.

therocinante · 24/03/2021 20:31

I don't often use gloves, feels like a faff when i can just thoroughly wash my hands.

If I'm de-moulding our horrid damp bathroom, I'll use them cos the stuff is strong, but otherwise I don't bother.

DipSwimSwoosh · 24/03/2021 20:32

If I use them I wash them after. If I don't I wash my hands.

ReverendRicketyCricket · 24/03/2021 20:39

I voted YABU because YABU not because you told me how to vote in your OP. For the avoidance of doubt - YABU.

Inastatus · 24/03/2021 20:40

I never use gloves, I find them too cumbersome. I think you are being OTT if you have to wear gloves to do the laundry!
I also use bare hands to handle raw chicken and have never had any problems in my 50 odd years of doing so.

mineofuselessinformation · 24/03/2021 20:42

I very occasionally use rubber gloves, but keep them on my hands while I wash them afterwards, so have no qualms about using them for anything I feel the need for.
