Aibu to wonder how the Upper Middle class are surviving with all the ski trips, Xmas in the Caribbean & weekends in Norfolk?

Just that... Old friends of ours are part of the UMC set & pre covid had at least 2 ski trips a year, Xmas in Antigua, Safaris in South Africa & most weekends spent with "mummy & daddy" in Norfolk.... Obviously there are plenty like them. We haven't heard much from them over the years, lovely family but we drifted.. I'm pondering out load really, are the UMC making the most of lockdown or secretly breaking all the rules! This couple were fairly active on social media up until lockdown!

Upsiedaisy I’m in bits when are you publishing the book

CaraherEIL · 22/03/2021 17:19

UpsyDaisyTheThird
I am passionately in love with you and would read your regular column

KaleJuicer · 22/03/2021 17:24

We'll I've had about £20,000 in holidays refunded so I'm redecorating some of the house and have just ordered new blinds for several rooms. It's been quite boring but we're managing. Does that help?

littlepattilou · 22/03/2021 17:28

Mean and spiteful thread.

Bet you're rubbing your hands with glee at some self-employed people/people who have their own businesses losing everything too eh @Starzinhereyes ??? Hmm

PattyPan · 22/03/2021 17:52

It’s been possible to go to Norfolk for most of the time of year that you would want to.
Biggest outcry in my circle is actually over whether members’ clubs refund fees or not.

Movinghouseatlast · 22/03/2021 18:04

You don't really understand how the class system works. Upper middle class and rich do not mean the same thing at all.

Literallynoidea · 22/03/2021 18:05

OP you sound horribly chippy.

What a mean post.

ImInStealthMode · 22/03/2021 18:13

*Nice people worry about those who have less than them.

Unpleasant people look at those with more than them and spew petty little grievances*

Gosh, well yes it has been such a frightful bore, hasn't it?
We have been rallying round and volunteering at Food Banks etc.
Some of us are also marshalling at vaccination centres.
A lot of us have simply been keeping our farms going to supply the "lower orders" with milk, meat, vegetables and fruit. This is quite challenging as these people seem totally wedded to multi-national supermarkets in towns and cities, but hey ho.
Cocktail parties mostly done via WhatsApp or FaceTime, which Daddy calls "iFace", isn't that too adorable?

lazylinguist · 22/03/2021 18:15

Unpleasant thread. 'Not sneering' my arse. Everyone is missing the things they can normally do. I don't really see why that would apply more to UMC pursuits than to anyone else's. Why would an UMC person miss their trip to Antigua more than anyone else would miss their camping trip to Wales or Cornwall etc?

AuntieMarys · 22/03/2021 18:15

Glad you're not my friend

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 22/03/2021 19:53

I normally go on several long haul holidays per year.
I’m having a terrible time but it could always be worse. Thanks for asking, OP. Smile I’ve booked two holidays to Devon this summer though so I very much hope they go ahead!

callmeH · 22/03/2021 23:11

Probably still visiting parents in Norfolk but trips abroad skiing have been cancelled

Of course trhe skiing's cancelled, have you seen how flat Norfolk is??

callmeH · 22/03/2021 23:15

@ProfYaffle

I'm working class and live in Norfolk.

I'm really unclear how to feel about this thread

Grin

I'm in Norfolk too, thinking of building a ski lift on the road outside, at has a 2 degree slope and at the moment it's cold enough.
GoneCrazy · 22/03/2021 23:44

Dilemma8188 · 22/03/2021 23:46

Tbf most people I know feel a lot like OP so don't blame you. There is a chasm between those that have pottered around their large houses putting money aside and everyone else who's really struggling to make ends meet so there is real resentment out there and it is justified. It's not just "one of those things" that there are people "more fortunate" than others. It's the result of a broken political and economic system. I love trawling through mumsnet but by and large the demographic on here tends to be well off...

Dilemma8188 · 22/03/2021 23:48

Oh and agreed @UpsyDaisyTheThird that was genius. Although would you believe I received a Christmas newsletter from a family friend if my husband's which read remarkably similar....

hahaohno · 23/03/2021 02:52

the money we've saved from our trips in the last year has gone to charity.

😂 how generous

Pyewackect · 23/03/2021 03:18

1forAll74 · 23/03/2021 03:52

Lots of people go to all of these places that you mentioned, not just the upper middle classes, whatever this means. It's a bit of an outdate term now. But I would guess, that people who have a stash of money, break the rules, and just hop on a private jet and go where they fancy, and can skip any of the covid rules.

Rollmopsrule · 23/03/2021 05:03

You sound very envious of your friends lifestyle.

BritWifeinUSA · 23/03/2021 05:41

Maybe they’ve blocked you on SM and that’s why you can’t see any posts from them. I’d have blocked you too if you were my “friend”

HOkieCOkie · 23/03/2021 05:45

Don’t be jealous and bitter it’s not becoming.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 23/03/2021 06:02

This virus has brought out a lot of this kind if behaviour, its very ugly
