What is in the picture?

Not aibu but this has been bugging me for over a year!

Without giving any context, I was wondering what people see (if anything) in the yellow circle.

I will come back and give context but just curious what people think it is or might be?

First pictrue is the original, Second has been lightened to see if it makes it any clearer.

If you muck about with the brightness and contrast you can see that the doorway is open, you can see the stonework beyond it that is black in the original.

To me it is most likely a light reflected on the irregular stonework. The light could be from within the door way or outside.

Not sure what the can of Heineken is though. At first glance it does look like a bloke in a hoodie holding a can of Heineken or other green beer can. Lech mabye?

i think its the otherside of the arch doorway. the 'eyes' and 'mouth' line up with brick work of the other side.

It resembles a face in a hood, because pareidolia, but from the proportions etc it clearly isn't. It's light thrown inside the doorway on the bricks, further distorted by the camera, flash and so on. Mildly creepy to look at but there's nothing there.

Exactly. Or, OP, your mother actually has a third hand, and is using it to smoke.

Which is probably actually way freakier than a supernatural Elizabethan bloke with a moustache/a child in a hood/Flat Eric wearing lipstick.

She doesn't smoke, All I know is they were both drinking coffee at the time the picture was taken, which they are both holding to their mouth in the pic.

Mums having a crafty fag for sure you can see her thumb which looks like the right 'cheek' the 'eye' is shadow between the two fingers holding the fag ect ect

I used to work in a hotel and a few people mentioned some similar things occurring.

I never really thought much of it but I guess it was quite interesting.

I bet if you took the same photo at the same angle in the day you'd see where that came from.

I've got a table in my room with far too much stuff on it and every night I nearly have a heart attack when I get a freaky shadow person on my wall. Every night. And it's always the pile of stuff on my table and the light from my phone. And I know it is. And I still get a shock because, well, either I'm really really stupid or its my inner animal on the lookout for danger.

Is the hotel near where you live? Could you go to that doorway and see if there is a patch on the wall that looks like this. Might seem a bit much effort but you've now got hundreds of curious MNetters so you owe it to us to check!

It is creepy looking but the "face" is the same colour as the stone on the building so it's probably something explainable

Yes, I wondered this. Especially as the people having a fag and a coffee in the dark are off-centre, facing in another direction, away from the camera, and there's nothing scenic or interesting in the background to warrant a photo of a stretch of bare stone wall.

And I say this as the daughter of a woman who is spectacularly gifted at taking truly terrible photos, and the DIL of a woman who, judging by her holiday snaps, actually prefers photos of people with their mouths half-full of food and their eyes closed. I think she must think it looks like they're having fun.
