Horrid, cringey things people say

I nanny for a family that call dinner ‘sup sups’

It makes me feel ill. I’ve tried and tried to get the kids to stoppit and almost succeeded but due to lockdown, their mum is at home constantly and feeding them these twee little sayings as apparently it’ll be ‘a shame when they grow up and don’t say them anymore’ Hmm

Sup sups is the absolute worst but we also have ‘beddiebyes’ and ‘pop pops’ (I can’t even write what that one means because Its nauseating but it’s a bodily function)

The children are 6, 9 and 11, not babies.

It sounds dramatic but the thought of hearing these stupid phrases again tomorrow for another weeks is spoiling my Sunday Grin

Anyone got any to add to make me feel better?

@TheVampiresWife

That is horrific! I bet you were mortified lying in bed when they did that?? 🐭

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 21/03/2021 16:55

my fella' 'my bloke' hate it

And so old-fashioned, especially 'fella' which takes me right back to Jackie magazine, circa 1987.

Blondiney · 21/03/2021 16:57

@Myneighboursnorlax

This thread has just made me remember my late DGM used to always say “knicky-knacky-noonoos” in a singsong voice for knickers/pants.
Aww, that's cute.
spookybitches · 21/03/2021 17:00

@Mylovelyhorsee

I can’t stand hearing twee versions of grandparents names especially when the grandkids are tweens. For example, gong gong for grandad or some other made up nonsense.
Gong gong is actually the name for grandpa in quite a few south east Asian languages. Nothing twee about that at all.

Put it this way, your emoji just gave me traumatic flashbacks.

@StillCoughingandLaughing

It does annoy me when adults expect other adults to call them by nicknames, though. Not Jen instead of Jennifer or Chris instead of Christopher; I mean “My name’s Steve Fox, but everyone calls me Foxy” or similar. Not everyone, Steve.
You often find in this instance they are the kind of people that make up their nicknames for themselves as they like to be a bit "quirky"
Cheeeeislifenow · 21/03/2021 17:03

Anyone who puts on a stupid sing song accent for their kids! Nauseating

For young children this is an important vstage for development.

Deedyn · 21/03/2021 17:03

I agree with you OP. I too would find them VERY irritating!

I also get annoyed when I read ‘Only two SLEEPS to go....Arghhhh

badacorn · 21/03/2021 17:05

My DH and I use loads of made up words we’d hate others to overhear. I think it’s one of those things that is always much worse when someone else does it. Like farting.

Most of the examples here don’t bother me at all. Except “yummy” and all variations on that.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 21/03/2021 17:06

@AlCalavicci

Not quite the same but my DH use to change everyone's name slightly , so Tony = tone Karen = kaz Billy = billy bob Paul = pauule 0r paulie David =davy-do My name has two very common abbreviations both of which I am fine with but oh no he has to make up his own
Your husband is my husband 🤣. Mine does this too and one day it’ll be the death of him 🤣
Homehaircuts · 21/03/2021 17:06

To have a "cheeky" something. Especially when posted on SM. Like "out for cheeky drinks" "gone away for a cheeky weekend" I don't know why it just sounds irritating. Of course having been seeing as many 'cheeky' posts, as nobody can go or do anything these days.

Chanel05 · 21/03/2021 17:07

Sarnies 🤢.

When someone posts a picture of a bath/glass of wine/feet up etc, with the caption 'aaaaand relax'. I have a SAHM friend with kids in school, a nanny, cleaner and a rich investment banker husband who posts shit like this. You're whole life is one big relaxation, pipe downHmm

Okay, this one is definitely cringe, and I hope that very VERY few people have experienced it.

Way, way back, I had a few dates with a man I'd met at work. We got on really well, loads in common, etc etc. On our 5th date, I invited him back to mine for dinner. We were kissing on the sofa and he started moaning.

Then he leaned close and said 'Oooh, he wants it. Can you feel him?' I must have looked puzzled, as he went on to clarify... 'Mr Penis, he wants you to touch him. Go on, touch Mr Penis,' in this creepy, soft voice that just turned my stomach.

I can't remember what lie I made up to get him out of the house, but I managed to hustle him out on some pretence, and then told him I didn't think we were a good match. I think he's married now...

Yikes 😳 Apart from anything else, if he wanted me to touch it, I would not be calling it ‘Mr’. If I’m touching it, I should at least get to know its first name.

Sorry I have another one.
'Grab and go' ' context: On days when I have to grab and go. Grab something' 'grab a bite to eat' etc etc

Bellver888 · 21/03/2021 17:15

Grab a bite to eat makes me feel sick and I’ve never actually understood why

pilates · 21/03/2021 17:18

When a man says “the wife” instead of my wife
and “smashed it”

sneakysnoopysniper · 21/03/2021 17:20

I user to call my grandmother "nan" or "nana" right into adulthood, Thats the only one that stayed with me.

lollipoprainbow · 21/03/2021 17:20

An acquaintance on Instagram says that her 8 year old son makes a 'cracking brew' could punch her !

sotiredofthislonelylife · 21/03/2021 17:22

@thepeopleversuswork

There’s one of these threads on here every day and they are just snobbery or bitchiness masquerading as social commentary. It’s a new socially acceptable snobbery to laugh at people for saying “hubs” or “hun” or “sup sups” or whatever. It just makes the people doing it look small minded and unkind.

I honestly think if other people’s family words for things rile you up this much you either need to get out more or find another job.

Life is too short to get this invested in stuff which is none of your business.

Hear hear!!

"Boom" and (even worse) "bish bash bosh".

No. Just stop talking.

paintedpanda · 21/03/2021 17:24

We have a senior consultant at work who uses the word "leggies"... in front of patients... who are adults... even when they're awake to hear it... Hmm

Sh05 · 21/03/2021 17:25

@greenfrogs1
My DC used to have a teacher who said Pacific, it used to wind the kids up but what was worse is a few of the other teachers picked it up as well!
