Horrid, cringey things people say

I nanny for a family that call dinner ‘sup sups’

It makes me feel ill. I’ve tried and tried to get the kids to stoppit and almost succeeded but due to lockdown, their mum is at home constantly and feeding them these twee little sayings as apparently it’ll be ‘a shame when they grow up and don’t say them anymore’ Hmm

Sup sups is the absolute worst but we also have ‘beddiebyes’ and ‘pop pops’ (I can’t even write what that one means because Its nauseating but it’s a bodily function)

The children are 6, 9 and 11, not babies.

It sounds dramatic but the thought of hearing these stupid phrases again tomorrow for another weeks is spoiling my Sunday Grin

Anyone got any to add to make me feel better?

A good nanny is a real bonus to a family. It’s weird to think that a nanny won’t have any opinions on how things are done in the house she works in - that would make her a robot.

NiceTwin · 21/03/2021 12:00

My husband, who is in his 50's, called his parent's Mummy and Daddy. In fact his siblings did too.
I just found it really weird, not that I said anything but it was all a bit twee.

BabyBee93 · 21/03/2021 12:00

A friend of a friend still calls her parents mummy and daddy (early thirties!!!) and it makes me absolutely cringe

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/03/2021 12:01

Ok some of you need to calm down. I love these guys and am a very good nanny. But I won’t have the children say I need a pop pop when they need the loo for goodness sake! I mean honestly.

Horrid cringey things

That's pretty near the top of the list.

CruCru · 21/03/2021 12:01

I used to go out with someone who would refer to his parents as Mother! and Father! I mean, that was how he would say those words. I think he thought it made him posh.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 21/03/2021 12:02

@Zancah agree, overstepping big time.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/03/2021 12:02

For you brekkie people: Brekkies is a brand of cat biscuits in Germany (like Go Cat) so think on that.

I wonder if the makers of Kit-e-Kat get endless complaints from customers who were under the impression that they were buying four fingers of biscuity chocolate and instead ended up with a tin of meaty chunks Grin

Brownteddybear · 21/03/2021 12:02

@SozzledSausage

Someone on social media who regularly posts #boom #goals #dropthemic.

She's mid 40s and a bit overweight but seems to think she is fit, hip and trendy. I really like her but absolutely cringe when I look at her social media.

I was going to say what's her weight got to do with it? But women are fair game aren't they?Hmm
Fatladyslim · 21/03/2021 12:02

My DP's Mother DOESN'T say 'pop pops' or the worse alternative 'windy pops' but she makes me feel like she is going to. It makes me sick thinking about it and I just know one day she is going to say it to me or my son. I think dp told me she used to say it when he was small and now I am always on edge that she is going to. 10 years and I still feel this way 😂

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/03/2021 12:03

I have sleepy-bo-bos, nighty-night, moo-cows, sheepies, kitty cats, cuddles, jammies, brekky and only myself to talk to.

There are things that are actually evil and this is not one of them.

cuppycakey · 21/03/2021 12:03

Salady Bits or Picky Bits makes me feel really ill.

Ex Mil used to point and say "Ooh! Track Track" if she saw a tractor, even though nobody present was under 30.

GintyMcGinty · 21/03/2021 12:03

I hate

Nom

Nom nom

Okbussitout · 21/03/2021 12:04

Jesus I thought I had no chill. I'm changing between antidepressants right now and everything is irritating. But honestly I can't get that bothered about the language people use. To find it sickening or whatever.

One thing I don't like right now is grown ups saying habs for vaccine. Its just baby talk and dumbing down. But I don't think I could say anything makes me feel like op. And as I say I'm not exactly relaxed right now

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 21/03/2021 12:04

I know someone who always refers to her children as her 'wee cherub ' and 'wee prince' on FB. They are 20 somethings. None of my business but it does irritate me.

Mylovelyhorsee · 21/03/2021 12:04

I can’t stand hearing twee versions of grandparents names especially when the grandkids are tweens. For example, gong gong for grandad or some other made up nonsense.

funnylittlefloozie · 21/03/2021 12:05

The word "horrid" is twee when used by grown women. Makes me think of Violet Elizabeth Bott.

I cringe at famalam, holibobs and the absolute worst is hubalub instead of husband.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/03/2021 12:05

Also - heffalump and flutter-by.

sst1234 · 21/03/2021 12:06

OP, that really is bad. Honestly how do you not punch the mother in the face. I opened this thread thinking it will be something mundane, but that is something else.

Bloody hell it’s hard to get it right for some MILs.

jellyfrizz · 21/03/2021 12:07

@isseys4xmastinselcats

breakfast being called brekkie is my one
Everyone says this in Australia.
dancinfeet · 21/03/2021 12:07

My kids childminder used to say bok bok for bottle, as it was apparently short for bokkle. Sometimes a lickle bokkle if it was small. Hate holibobs and famalam, but cheeky anything is ridiculous. It's just a nandos, what's cheeky about it? Glass of wine not cheeky vino ffs.

StellaKowalski · 21/03/2021 12:08

@Mum497

My ex used to refer to his family (Mum, Dad and brothers) as his 'famalam' it honestly used to make me feel ill and I think is part of the reason we aren't together now. He also used to call his Grandpa 'Gramps' I mean that one isn't so bad but I think the 'famalam' thing and 'Gramps' together was just too much for me to handle.

I must admit though I have a two year old and I do refer to her leggings or any type of bottoms and 'bot bots' I really should stop because it's cringe but it just comes out! I also refer to her nappy as a 'nap nap' don't ask me why! I feel ashamed.

My partner's family group chat is titled 'Famalam'. I cringe every time it pops up.

Lol. You're the NANNY, not the parent. I'd fire your condescending arse out of the front door if I got wind of you trying to belittle and undermine my parenting like that.

I think we found the mother.
