Horrid, cringey things people say

I nanny for a family that call dinner ‘sup sups’

It makes me feel ill. I’ve tried and tried to get the kids to stoppit and almost succeeded but due to lockdown, their mum is at home constantly and feeding them these twee little sayings as apparently it’ll be ‘a shame when they grow up and don’t say them anymore’ Hmm

Sup sups is the absolute worst but we also have ‘beddiebyes’ and ‘pop pops’ (I can’t even write what that one means because Its nauseating but it’s a bodily function)

The children are 6, 9 and 11, not babies.

It sounds dramatic but the thought of hearing these stupid phrases again tomorrow for another weeks is spoiling my Sunday Grin

Anyone got any to add to make me feel better?

I think this is more funny than cringe but your story reminded me of when I was a nanny years ago and the dad called his dd’s comfort blanket her blanky wankit Grin

@RhubarbTea

Making Memories Live Laugh Love Hubster Husbot Hubby Famalam Holibobs Love you to the moon and back This one (i.e 'Out for the day with this one' aka their child) Blessed Furbaby Nom / Noms - I think that last one grinds my gears more than anything else on this list. It makes my teeth itch with irritation.
@RhubarbTea that's a rich seam you've hit there, and you appear to live in my road - I've got a cringeworthy neighbour who must play bingo with that lot I swear she gets most of those in, every day, on her facebook page.

i wouldn't have you as a Nanny, for posting about a family that you work for,and divulging the family's little personal sayings,,and that it all makes you feel ill.. You just work there, and are not a parent there.

We all just work at our work, but can still laugh if they use silly language. In my case it would be jargon and abbreviations. She hasn't really divulged anything because she hasn't named the family.

"I swear on my child's life"

Staffy1 · 21/03/2021 15:19

I'm guilty of one: "juicy Lucy" for juice when DS was younger.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 21/03/2021 15:20

@FurrySlipperBoots

I'm a nanny too and the family I'm currently with are big on baby talk. It's quite alarming that I'm finding myself saying it all too!!
Yes, be careful. DH and I started saying yog-yog for yoghurt as a pisstake, after staying with some baby-talking friends, and now it's stuck.

The rules do vary by country though - in Australia, brekkie, rellies and veggies are totally normal speech and not twee.

Cheeeeislifenow · 21/03/2021 15:25

Again, I am astounded how people on mn cope in real life when they are perpetually irritated by everything in life.

Twobrews · 21/03/2021 15:27

This puppa was so psyched to meet his chicken brother".
Chicken brother has really made me laugh Grin

HazelBite · 21/03/2021 15:29

Hospical instead of hospital gets my hackles rising, also kiddiewinks, sprogs, and holibobs.

My DIL who used to work in a nursery said parents are doing their kids no favours by calling "bodily functions" by words other than wee or poo, it just causes confusion and distress to kids and staff,

TeckanandMultra · 21/03/2021 15:29

People who say "love you to the moon and back" or "love you all the world", thinking they're original and that it's "their" phrase, when they're both pretty ubiquitous.

I also DESPISE people calling their unborn child "raisin" or "peanut" or "bean", because "that's how big it was when we find out". Just awful.

reesewithoutaspoon · 21/03/2021 15:30

Lookatthemshine · 21/03/2021 15:30

Adults talking about ‘nibblies’ - I know someone who does this and it winds me up - ‘just going to have some nibblies tonight’ grrr

hellywelly3 · 21/03/2021 15:31

My DH family do this with loads of words. Everyone has stupid nick names. It used to really drive me mad, just use the right bloody word! I’ve learnt to just ignore it, luckily my DC haven’t picked it up

cathybates · 21/03/2021 15:31

I am guilty of saying the following to my toddler and newborn however:

Nap nap (nappy);
Yog yog (yoghurt);
Bot bot (bottle);
Pop pops (fart);
Choo choo (train)

Sidewalksue · 21/03/2021 15:32

I think Hun always sounds passive aggressive.

I know a couple who use #makingmemories (hashtag on Facebook) when they take their kids out once a year or something. No mention of the rest of the time when they are trying to get rid of them to do things alone.

RelaisBlu · 21/03/2021 15:35

Isn't there a bit in "Killing Eve" where Villanelle mocks somebody who invites her for "family sups" and makes the comment "Why do posh people talk like children?"

misssarahh · 21/03/2021 15:35

Those poor kids are getting bulied when they go back to school.

Frazzledd · 21/03/2021 15:38

@Morello339

I used to be a reception teacher and parents were always amazed when their child wasn't getting where they should be in communication and language. One mum asked me why and when I said ' in all my observations he is calling animals by the noises they make (moo moo) cars (broom broom) and he can't use tenses correctly'. She said ' well yeah, but he's 5. He won't do it forever'. Funnily enough I can't assess a child on what he WILL do one day.
But you did know he was 5? Hmm

You don't get to control what your employees do in their own time. Hmm
StillCoughingandLaughing · 21/03/2021 15:41

Presumably she assessed him against the expected level for a five year-old?

SanFrancisco49er · 21/03/2021 15:43

Foraging. Or 'foraged'. No, you just picked something in the suburban area you live in. 'Foraged blackberry crumble tonight!'

And fur babies of any kind. And food baby.

Also hate the word 'belly'. It's stomach or tummy. Belly pork is fine though (unless it's been foraged).

NormanStangerson · 21/03/2021 15:44

I’m sorry, I’m all over this thread. I’ve thought of another one. I’m not sure why it annoys me so much. It’s just so infantilised it makes me really cross. 🤷🏼‍♀️

And also, it’s one of which so many parents seem to be guilty:

“Pass me a muzzy...”
“Have we got a muzzy?”
“All I was given when I had a baby was millions of muzzies.”
“You can’t move in our house for fucking muzzies.”

Etc.

Foraged...so true! I'm doing that a bit myself soon... With wild garlic... I'll offer my "foraged wild garlic pesto" to some friends... See how they respond. Grin
