Horrid, cringey things people say

I nanny for a family that call dinner ‘sup sups’

It makes me feel ill. I’ve tried and tried to get the kids to stoppit and almost succeeded but due to lockdown, their mum is at home constantly and feeding them these twee little sayings as apparently it’ll be ‘a shame when they grow up and don’t say them anymore’ Hmm

Sup sups is the absolute worst but we also have ‘beddiebyes’ and ‘pop pops’ (I can’t even write what that one means because Its nauseating but it’s a bodily function)

The children are 6, 9 and 11, not babies.

It sounds dramatic but the thought of hearing these stupid phrases again tomorrow for another weeks is spoiling my Sunday Grin

Anyone got any to add to make me feel better?

My ex used to refer to his family (Mum, Dad and brothers) as his 'famalam' it honestly used to make me feel ill and I think is part of the reason we aren't together now. He also used to call his Grandpa 'Gramps' I mean that one isn't so bad but I think the 'famalam' thing and 'Gramps' together was just too much for me to handle.

I must admit though I have a two year old and I do refer to her leggings or any type of bottoms and 'bot bots' I really should stop because it's cringe but it just comes out! I also refer to her nappy as a 'nap nap' don't ask me why! I feel ashamed.

SozzledSausage · 21/03/2021 11:44

Someone on social media who regularly posts #boom #goals #dropthemic.

She's mid 40s and a bit overweight but seems to think she is fit, hip and trendy. I really like her but absolutely cringe when I look at her social media.

KitchenFairy · 21/03/2021 11:46

Famalam and holibobs are two non-words guaranteed to make me never want to see or speak to you ever again.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/03/2021 11:47

Agree about sup sups - I don’t even like ‘supper’ TBH, but since first having dcs we’ve always used beddybyes, not to mention beddybyebabies. Dh and I (now GPs) still do - ‘Goodnight, I’m off to beddybyebabies’ - (me to dh.) 😂
(Or 🤮 if that’s how you feel.)

Shodan · 21/03/2021 11:48

#holibobswiththefam.

Honestly. All on one FB post. Not a friend, but one of those FB friend collector types. Unfriended, speedily.

Choccy-biccies

🤢

notanothertakeaway · 21/03/2021 11:51

OP, your post makes you easily identifiable if your boss is on MN

gottenhaitch · 21/03/2021 11:51

My mum used to say beddibyes to me and it slips out of me occasionally...

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/03/2021 11:52

@notanothertakeaway don’t worry, I appreciate the concern but her and her peers are VERY vehemently not Mumsnet people.

Lol. You're the NANNY, not the parent. I'd fire your condescending arse out of the front door if I got wind of you trying to belittle and undermine my parenting like that.

lemorella · 21/03/2021 11:53

There was an advert back along that used the term rellies for relatives Confused think it was DFS

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/03/2021 11:54

@Zancah ok 😂

My DM persisted in trying to get my two DS to use moo-cow, baa-lambs, grunt-grunts along with din-dins, beddybyes and many more. DH and I never used those words, we just used normal words. She stopped when on DS around aged 9 asked "Granny why do you say all your words funny when you speak to me but use normal words for everyone else?" I was secretly very pleased! Supsups would also wind me up and YANBU. I can't understand why people insist on babying kids, especially the age you are looking after.

Stronghold · 21/03/2021 11:54

I actually agree that its not your place to try and stop the family having their own words and phrases for stuff. My family had nonsensical words for things and it was part of our bond.

AlCalavicci · 21/03/2021 11:55

Not quite the same but my DH use to change everyone's name slightly , so Tony = tone
Karen = kaz
Billy = billy bob
Paul = pauule 0r paulie
David =davy-do
My name has two very common abbreviations both of which I am fine with but oh no he has to make up his own

Nuitsdesetoiles · 21/03/2021 11:55

Friyay instead of Friday
Only x amount of "sleeps" until a particular event....
Holibobs
"Making memories" on social media. All guaranteed an unfollow..

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/03/2021 11:56

Sure, they can use them when I’m not around to each other if that’s what they do, but just as I won’t speak in whine, I won’t speak in twee saying either.

I agree!

They aren’t your children. You’re their nanny

Brefugee · 21/03/2021 11:57

Making memories is nauseating! Some of my friends do it and it's just cringeworthy.

I loathe holibobs and famalam too but can cope with most other things. Although what i see a lot here is spuds and/or jackets and it makes me irrationally angry.

For you brekkie people: Brekkies is a brand of cat biscuits in Germany (like Go Cat) so think on that. Grin

SpnBaby1967 · 21/03/2021 11:58

Anyone who hashtags #MakingMemories deserves to be shot.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/03/2021 11:59

For some reason, this brings to mind another thread where a man had been told that his grandad had been taken into hospital, went to the hospital and asked to be able to see him - BUT this grown adult gave his grandad's name as 'Grandad' and was really unpleasant to the receptionist when she couldn't locate a patient of that 'name' on their lists Grin

I know it's divisive on MN, but we know somebody who insists that their children still call them Mummy and Daddy, several years older than their friends have reverted to just Mum and Dad. They want to use the less babyish terms as well, but keep getting 'corrected' as if they are being rude if they forget, just for wanting to use age-appropriate terms.

Oh, shush! People are allowed to find their boss annoying, and sup-sups IS bloody annoying.

I actually don't think I can top that, sorry OP Grin

thepeopleversuswork · 21/03/2021 11:59

There’s one of these threads on here every day and they are just snobbery or bitchiness masquerading as social commentary. It’s a new socially acceptable snobbery to laugh at people for saying “hubs” or “hun” or “sup sups” or whatever. It just makes the people doing it look small minded and unkind.

I honestly think if other people’s family words for things rile you up this much you either need to get out more or find another job.

Life is too short to get this invested in stuff which is none of your business.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 21/03/2021 11:59

Sup sups is fucking awful. I thought 'supper' was horrid enough, but sup sups ffs.
