AIBU not to want a dishwasher?

My DP and I are currently planning our kitchen. We don't have dishwasher in our current kitchen and I'm not too bothered. He thinks it's an essential, and it'll become more essential as our kids grow - they're tiny atm. The new kitchen doesn't have a huge amount of cupboard space so I think we should save the space and go without. What do people with slightly older kids think? Is it something that would put you off buying a place if there wasn't a dishwasher? We might sell the house in a few years. I'm a bit torn - I don't mind washing up - sometimes it feels like a break!

From a selling POV just make sure there's a 600mm cupboard in an appropriate place (snd plumbing point) for a dishwasher - then a new owner can easily put one in, if they want one.

I'm doing my kitchen too - due to doors/gas meter (that cannot be moved) etc etc there is only space for a slimline. I can't decide whether to get one or not, but I think I will - I'm fed up of the mess on the side, more than washing the dishes, my hot water takes ages to come through do it feels wasteful to do just a couple of bits.

I have one and dont want it and never use it. It's now storage for my Instant Pot. Would rather have it as a cupboard and I'm not even short of space!

Fiftyand · 19/03/2021 21:47

My husband felt the same as you. There was a dw in our current home when we bought it and he wouldn’t live without it now!

CrackersDontMatter · 19/03/2021 21:50

We're a family of seven. We have just got a dishwasher and it has changed our lives. Would NEVER go back to washing by hand.

CherryCherries · 19/03/2021 21:50

I use a commercial dishwasher at work and you definitely want to be pre rinsing before you load. Otherwise your dishwasher will be just clogging up with food debris, grease, general grime, meaning you'll need to be cleaning the dishwasher all the time.
At work we need to drain and clean it each day, I imagine at home it would less so. We also need to salt it once a week. Cleaning your stuff in a dirty dishwasher is pointless and it won't be clean if you're chucking in dirty food items without a pre rinse everytime.
More hassle than they are worth!

StrongerOrWeaker · 19/03/2021 21:50

I have never found them useful.i am with you on this one!

@Parkerwhereareyou

MADNESS.

Put a dishwasher in.

I would consider a house without a dishwasher a potential disaster throughout. Because I'd think 'Who the f would have done a new kitchen and not had a dishwasher?'

Often with young kids we start out being very virtuous and idealistic.

They get older. The dishwasher becomes more and more attractive. One day you'll seriously have a moment where you start thinking the dishwasher is more useful and more attractive than your husband.

Get a bloody dishwasher and don't be an idiot. : )

All virtues and ideals (and hopes and ambitions, and energies and sense of self, and sleep and sanity) are long gone. I take your point though. We're getting one.

Would put me off a house and if a kitchen didn’t have a slot for one I’d discount the cost of a new kitchen from any price I’d offer for a house. Most people would consider it to be an essential for any kitchen especially with kids.

dottiedaisee · 19/03/2021 21:52

I most definitely consider a dishwasher as a necessity...I don’t have the time or inclination to wash up after a meal!

Kendodd · 19/03/2021 21:52

I'm with your husband.

I remember when our dishwasher broke, bloody hell, I spent my entire time washing dishes. And there were plates and cups and pans all over the place.

I want to get a robot vacuum soon and am hoping that'll change my life as well.

Vierty · 19/03/2021 21:53

I can’t think why on earth you wouldn’t have one.

Benjispruce2 · 19/03/2021 21:53

I love mine and would never be without it.

frazzledasarock · 19/03/2021 21:54

For years I didn’t have a dishwasher, we’ve got one now.
I love it more than DH, I’m claiming it in the event of a divorce.

Who does the dishes in your house? They should get the deciding vote.

Betbloom · 19/03/2021 21:54

Essential

ichundich · 19/03/2021 21:55

It saves sooo much time. Before we had a dishwasher I used to spend about 1h a day washing up. That's 7h per week! I also used to break way more cups, plates and glasses and the mugs, frying pans and copper pots were never as clean.

grafittiartist · 19/03/2021 21:55

Don't have one, and don't particularly want one- seems quicker to do it by hand than load a machine.
Each to their own!

Skysblue · 19/03/2021 22:00

Its an essential for us. Washing up may not bother you now but wait til kids are older and constantly snacking!

Jemenfouscompletement · 19/03/2021 22:00

Had a dishwasher for years. Moved house and now don't have one, don't miss it one bit but there are only 3 of us or 5 sometimes when DD is back from university with her BF
Everyone takes their turn at washing up. Before it was me who loaded and unloaded the dishwasher.
I think with a lot of young kids it's more important to have one - at least until the older ones are capable of washing up!

Durtyblurty · 19/03/2021 22:00

I never wanted one, OH always did. I thought 'use too much electricity, use horrible harsh chemicals, use too much water (I am very frugal with the hot water when handwashing dishes, even though I rinse everything), etc.
We got one.
I would now never be without one.
Total game changer.

Zig4zag · 19/03/2021 22:02

I'd much rather the extra cupboard space

Twofurrycatsagain · 19/03/2021 22:05

I'd rather lose my washer and have to do laundry in the river than not have a dishwasher.
I hate washing up.

Kendodd · 19/03/2021 22:07

I'd much rather the extra cupboard space
I'd take everything out of that cupboard, put it all in the bin, and get a dishwasher.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 19/03/2021 22:07

Ive never owned a dishwasher in my life. It's never crossed my mind to get one.
Even if I go someone in UK on holiday and there's one in the lodge or whatever I still don't bother using it.
If your new kitchen is small I'd definitely prefer the extra cupboard.

Nonbio46 · 19/03/2021 22:08

I’ve never had a dishwasher and my ‘kids’ are 21 and 18. I’d rather have the cupboard space and it’s one less thing to break. I also don’t mind washing dishes by hand as I can watch the birds in the garden. 😊

Newkitchen123 · 19/03/2021 22:08

I don't have one.
Used to have one. By the time you've rinsed it all you may as wash it
Don't miss it one bit
