AIBU not to want a dishwasher?

My DP and I are currently planning our kitchen. We don't have dishwasher in our current kitchen and I'm not too bothered. He thinks it's an essential, and it'll become more essential as our kids grow - they're tiny atm. The new kitchen doesn't have a huge amount of cupboard space so I think we should save the space and go without. What do people with slightly older kids think? Is it something that would put you off buying a place if there wasn't a dishwasher? We might sell the house in a few years. I'm a bit torn - I don't mind washing up - sometimes it feels like a break!

How bizarre some of these responses are! My husband is a chef and almost everything we eat is cooked from scratch. Pre COVID we hosted dinners for up to 12 in our home...we don’t have a home dishwasher. Partly because our favorite dinnerware is hand made and is not dishwasher safe. We wash and clear as we go, then at the end of the meal it’s just a few plates and glasses.

Bythemillpond · 21/03/2021 15:04

Surely if you clear as you go then your washing up must take longer than the few plates at the end or don’t you count the washing up done before you have eaten.

When you cook there are shortish moments of downtime, where you don’t want to leave the food unattended. For example imagine you are making vegetable soup for lunch. Whilst the soup simmers and the veg softens, you have 15 minutes or so, which is ample time to make toast or croutons, stir the soup occasionally to stop it catching, and wash up.

"Yes, poke bowls and sugar free, gluten free cakes made with things like courgette are known for being massively unhealthy, you're not wrong there."

You must have misread my post. I didnt mention any of those 😉. They'd be really healthy though as I'd consume no calories as I wouldn't eat anything like that.

"What do you do if you have a dinner party though? You can't really wash up as you go when there's guests waiting for their meals and cocktails."

I've never had a dinner party in my life. I might go out for dinner with friends or they might come over and we would get a take away but we don't do dinner partys. Nor cocktails. I don't drink alcohol. I'd wash up the next day if there were dishes as I'm not such a knob that I can't adjust my routine for one day.

(awaits further abuse for being the Onslow to your Hyacinth)

@TheKeatingFive Glad you've seen the error of your ways Smile

As @ElephantsNest has said there are natural gaps which are filled by multi tasking as things simmer etc.

I haven't had the need to count dish washing minutes or justify my yokel status before this thread, sorry the counting isn't to your standard by not factoring in the 5 minutes I would be occasionally stirring and where I washed a knife and a bowl during this time. Will I count that as 1 minute or 5?

HeronLanyon · 21/03/2021 17:57

I agree with downtime cleaning - my kitchen is often it’s cleanest as whatever it is finally goes in the oven or whatever - wiling down and washing as I go is easy.
Also had a thought - I almost always listen to The Archers when I do dishes. On sounds and headphones - I’ll miss that when I get a dishwasher (still a convert here overall).

Vetyveriohohoh · 21/03/2021 18:13

We’re about to redo our kitchen and I’m putting 2 in. YABU

JustDespair · 21/03/2021 19:13

@CeeceeBloomingdale

My point about the takeaway was that you said it was full of lard. That's certainly true if you're going with pizza or Chinese food, but there's so many lovely and healthy takeaways these days.
The same applies to baking, it doesn't have to be full of sugar and fat, thought I think we can both agree the vegan courgette cake, though lovely, doesn't really beat the chocolate fudge cake.

I don't think wanting the kitchen cleaned on the night is being a knob. In my case for example, we were straight out the door the next morning to go away for a few days.

Well now I want chocolate fudge cake. Screwed myself over there.

There are so many lovely and healthy takeaways in London maybe. Not where I live. There’s the standard pizza, Chinese and Indian. There’s one Lebanese about 10 miles away which is incredibly exotic for these parts and I can’t think of any other choices. I wish there were. When we go away in the UK we tend to go to quite remote areas of Scotland where there is even less choice, the place we go to most frequently doesn’t have anywhere delivering takeaways and to drive and fetch even just a Chinese would take 30 minutes each way driving down unlit country lanes. This is probably why our takeaways are rare as they are quite unhealthy and a pain in the arse to get.

I’m not sure I could ever by convinced by courgette cake, chocolate fudge cake isn’t really my thing either. I prefer fruity flavours to chocolate , although now you’ve mentioned it I could have a go at a small portion with a dollop of cream if anywhere delivers!

GhostCurry · 21/03/2021 19:43

I was like you, OP... until I got one.

JustDespair · 21/03/2021 19:55

@CeeceeBloomingdale

London definitely has the best takeaway options and I do envy all the amazing foods they get to experience there. We live in a village but are lucky enough to have a city about 8 miles away.

Honestly, the courgette cake is lovely and I can't wait for the vegan café to open again so I can go there and pig out Grin If I had the recipe, I would 100% be willing to wash everything up by hand after, though I do prefer my little dishwasher Halo

Either way, as far as dishwashers go, it's everyone's choice to have one or not. I couldn't go back to not having one, not only because of the time I save but also because I now suffer from nail psoriasis and I cannot get my hands wet more often than necessary and even just using my hands at all ends up with more symptoms of it, so the dishwasher is a life (nail) saver for me. Especially in these covid times when they're always wet from soap and water or hand sanitiser as it is!

Skyliner001 · 21/03/2021 20:06

YANBU they are grim

Absofuckinlutely.

I never wanted to want a dishwasher but shit, now we have one... the fairy liquid can get to fuck!

DaisyWaldron · 21/03/2021 20:14

Same, @JustDespair. It's eczema for me, but the dishwasher and bread maker both do work that my hands really shouldn't do.

Bourbonic · 21/03/2021 20:21

I've loafs of room for a dishwasher but I don't like them so haven't got one. If I were selling the house I could quite easily fit one.

TheKeatingFive · 21/03/2021 20:22

Dishwashers are grim now? 😂

This is truly the site that keeps on giving

HeronLanyon · 21/03/2021 20:25

Although I am a convert I also have always felt they aren’t partic clean. When I’ve used one I’ve hated that smell as you open it - kind of stale steam - this with new and cleaned machines. And not when left for ages before unloading. That’s actually my main reason for not ever having wanted one. In the past.

Skyliner001 · 21/03/2021 21:05

This is exactly it, they are just grim 😏
TheKeatingFive · 21/03/2021 21:14

So grim because they produce steam? Confused

HeronLanyon · 21/03/2021 21:22

I said stale steam didn’t I ? Scrolls back. Yes. It’s that stale smell I’ve never liked.
I think I’ve every right not to.
If you’ve differing views that’s fine too.

TheKeatingFive · 21/03/2021 21:27

I don’t even understand what you mean by ‘stale’ steam.

There’s a faint ‘detergenty’ smell from the aftermath of the dishwasher tab, but nothing I’d describe as even close to ‘stale’.

HeronLanyon · 21/03/2021 21:33

Ok - bloody hell having made an Unheard of conversion from hater to really thinking about getting one (upthread) I now feel as though I’ve joined some fringe sect !
I disagree with you keating. I am deffo not forcing you to agree with me.

TheKeatingFive · 21/03/2021 21:40

I am deffo not forcing you to agree with me.

I know that, I just genuinely don’t get the objection. 🤷‍♀️

HeronLanyon · 21/03/2021 21:42

You don’t need to. I don’t need to ‘get’ anyone else’s differing opinion either. It really is ok and frankly wouldn’t the world be a more boring place if heron and keating both smelled that steam the same ?
Wont use the loathed shrug emoji Grin

Ineedaneasteregg · 21/03/2021 22:03

Dishwashers are so clean that you can use them to sterilize items.
