AIBU not to want a dishwasher?

My DP and I are currently planning our kitchen. We don't have dishwasher in our current kitchen and I'm not too bothered. He thinks it's an essential, and it'll become more essential as our kids grow - they're tiny atm. The new kitchen doesn't have a huge amount of cupboard space so I think we should save the space and go without. What do people with slightly older kids think? Is it something that would put you off buying a place if there wasn't a dishwasher? We might sell the house in a few years. I'm a bit torn - I don't mind washing up - sometimes it feels like a break!

The suggestion/suspicion that people are ‘lazy’ for having a dishwasher is a strange one if you ask me. Should we be washing our clothes by hand too?

MissingLinker · 20/03/2021 10:30

I've never had one, never needed one. I don't mind doing the washing up compared to most cleaning stuff, though, if I hated it I might get one. It really doesn't take that long to wash up.

Is it useful for some people? Yes. Essential? No.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 20/03/2021 10:31

Ours broke and new one didn't arrive for weeks - l don't mind washing up but the kitchen never looked tidy so dishwasher is a useful storage space too in a way!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 10:33

@Cadent you seem to be taking everything here really personally even if it isn't aimed at you directly.

Are you ok?

monstermissy · 20/03/2021 10:35

I had one then redone my kitchen and didn't want to lose cupboard space so didn't get one. Everyone and their mum told me I'd made a mistake but I honestly don't miss it. I manage just fine and have 2 older teens.

CounsellorTroi · 20/03/2021 10:35

Even when we cook from scratch that only usually involves chopping boards and some utensils and a bowl or two. I use a hand mixer for cakes, beating egg whites etc so that’s just the beaters to wash.

When ours broke, my choice about which model for the new one and where it came from was strongly influenced by who could deliver the quickest.

Curry's could deliver a Bosch one the next day for £50 less than John Lewis who would have taken a week to come up with a similar model.

No, I’m just replying to a thread like everyone else.

Are you ok?

midgedude · 20/03/2021 10:38

Both me and dh came from houses with dishwashers and decided our kitchen was too small

Moving house and designing larger kitchen, we are not bothering with a dishwasher

Whathappenedtothelego · 20/03/2021 10:39

I don't understand why people without dishwashers think they take a long time to load and put away.

If you are washing up by hand, you 1.transport the dishes etc from the table to the worktop next to the sink.

  1. Add hot water and washing up liquid to the sink. Wash up and put the dishes next to the sink, possibly in a rack.
  2. Remove the dishes from the rack. Dry the dishes one by one with a tea towel and put them away.

Versus 1. Transport the dishes to the dishwasher and put them inside.

  1. Add the detergent and press start.
  2. Remove the dishes from the dishwasher one by one and put them away.

Unless you keep your dishwasher in a separate outbuilding, the amount of transporting dirty and clean dishes is basically the same.

And you don't run out of hot water half way through washing up.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 10:44

@Cadent no need to be shitty. I just know that we are all having tougher times now🤷🏻
I mean thanking someone for a judgment when they didn't judge you was bit out of "normal replies" but fine.

Cadent · 20/03/2021 10:46

Isn’t a faux-concerned ‘are you ok?’ shitty?

MrsKeats · 20/03/2021 10:53

I love my dishwasher. We have a slimline one too.

m0therofdragons · 20/03/2021 10:55

@SchrodingersImmigrant stop being so patronising then pretending genuine concern.

Anyway, I’ve not been without a dishwasher since I was 24 and I’d never go back to piles of plates by the sink again. Dc empty the dishwasher and put dishes away and that started about age 6.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/03/2021 10:57

Fucking hell

HedgeOwl · 20/03/2021 10:58

I genuinely don’t understand not having a dishwasher

So rude! I'm not surprised @Cadent is taking it personally, I am too. So far people without a dishwasher have been called idiots, been assured of lying about how long dish washing takes, been accused of living on takeaways or freezer foods.

For what it's worth I also cook from scratch, can afford a dish washer, have a large kitchen so space for a dish washer. I just don't want one Hmm.

londonscalling · 20/03/2021 11:00

I wouldn't be without one and actually contemplated getting two as there are seven of us in the house.

littleredberries · 20/03/2021 11:02

@anniegun

Its an essential appliance for most people. It is also a more environmentally responsible way of washing up. I am not sure I could face the aftermath of a full Sunday lunch without one! Also baking seems to create an amazing amount of washing up
Really? I have honestly never heard it being more "environmentally responsible"! I would have thought the opposite were true! Hand washing tends to use less water. Especially when you consider the electricity needed as well... but enlighten me.
Cadent · 20/03/2021 11:03

Thanks @m0therofdragons and @CeeceeBloomingdale Flowers

littleredberries · 20/03/2021 11:03

Not to mention the resources used in the building of the machine!
Not saying a dish washer is a bad thing at all. Just somewhat thrown by the "environmental" argument.

FreakinFrankNFurter · 20/03/2021 11:06

It’s an essential for us. We have a slimline one which is perfect day to day for the 3 of us.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2021 11:06

YANBU, I've never had one and don't see the need personally. But then there are only 2 of us in the house so washing up really doesn't take long.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2021 11:07

@HedgeOwl

I genuinely don’t understand not having a dishwasher
Really? Why is it so difficult to understand that people live differently?
