My 4 year olds homework??

For a 4 year old that looks hard!!

At least it has the images so you could maybe count each of the things it asks for so he/she can learn that way?

Allthenumbers · 19/03/2021 16:10

That’s ridiculous and not appropriate for a reception child. I’m a teacher.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 19/03/2021 16:12

4 years old so reception?? That's on the year 2 curriculum. Is your child in the "top group"?

pollylocketpickedapocket · 19/03/2021 16:13

I feel the school push quite hard, clearly. There doesn’t seem to be much praise either, just on to the next thing.

Yes reception. I’ve no idea if she’s in the top group, if there’s reception child doing harder work than this they’ll be oxbridge when they’re 9!

There's a difference between pushing quite hard and setting completely inappropriate work though. This is not a suitable activity for an EYFS child though. I'd go on a 3D shape hunt instead and in the "comment" you're invited to make tell them it wasn't suitable. 🤷‍♂️
tulippa · 19/03/2021 16:19

In the comments box you could say he struggled with it because it expected him to understand content that is not taught until KS1. Very lazy of the teacher just to print off a Twinkl worksheet that is completely unsuitable. I like the PP's idea about a 3D shape hunt.

EugenesAxe · 19/03/2021 16:24

Agree that looks more like Y2 work. It's much too hard for age 4! I'd be giving any YR kid I met kudos for just naming 2D or 3D shapes...

Is it a private school or anything? Some of those are a big freakish when it comes to expectations of attainment at an early age.

MoonriseKingdom · 19/03/2021 16:25

This looks to be much too abstract. I would think the vast majority of 4 year olds would not be able to visualise a square based pyramid based on that drawing. They need to be looking at actual objects and counting faces, sides etc

MissFlite · 19/03/2021 16:26

Good grief, that's ridiculous, more like year 2 work.

I would raise this with teacher (I am one too FWIW)

firstimemamma · 19/03/2021 16:28

I used to teach reception and that homework is inappropriate.

whatsleep · 19/03/2021 16:28

I work in a school, I’d assume there’s been a mistake as that is definitely not an EYFS target! Maybe the wrong sheets were picked up from the photocopier and given out by mistake?

2020isnotbehaving · 19/03/2021 16:28

Not many 4y can visually how many sides a shape has when they can only see half of them. Much better have them as picture (as reminder to parents) and then ask you to find something similar at home and count.

That’s exactly what I thought! We had a 3D shape hunt back in November, I was going to do it again then ask the questions. I’ll definitely mention this to the teacher though, I’m my dd answers them great, I’ll have to check google.

Dd is Y1 and did 2D and 3D shapes last week. So she could name all those shapes now, but probably couldn't do most of the rest of that sheet. Far too hard and too abstract for Reception - when Dd was in Reception it was recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes, shape hunts etc.

ByTheNine · 19/03/2021 16:33

We had the same for my reception aged child during lockdown - they had to do a shape hunt but also a sheet like that, so it's not just your school and probably not a mistake. It was fine, vertices is a funny word but it just means points so we used that instead.

ExplodingCarrots · 19/03/2021 16:34

This is a similar work sheet my year 2 DD was given not long ago. She would have struggled with this at 4!

lanthanum · 19/03/2021 16:35

The title doesn't match the task, either...

EugenesAxe · 19/03/2021 16:36

And @MoonriseKingdom has it perfectly when she says they need to be handling examples of the objects. You could do this quite easily at home though; ball, tin can, dice, 8-spot LEGO brick or a rectangular box, Cornetto. Pyramids and triangular prisms you'd have to get inventive with based on what you had!

It never does! I thought that odd too.

That's insane. And inappropriately pitched for a 4 year old.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 19/03/2021 16:38

FGS it's the first 3D shape sheet to come up on google. Lazy teacher.

Swordfish1 · 19/03/2021 16:39

That is crazy for a 4 year old.

Personally I think its crazy giving a 4 year old homework full stop.

Thankfully my dc school made homework optional for the years below year 5. They are a great school and totally understood that sometimes both parents work, can get in at 6pm, do dinner, bath kids and there is no time for helping with homework on alot of occasions as it can impose on family time. So it was a case of do it if you want, If you prefer to go to the park, play a board game or build a snowman, that's fine too.

Dementedswan · 19/03/2021 16:39

That seems far too hard for a 4 year old. Unless you collect items in those shapes and explain each one.

My year 4 child could do them... just... but the sphere ? That's got to be a trick question 🤔

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 19/03/2021 16:40

You don't think she's picked it up by accident do you? It could've been in the scrap paper drawer...? But as I said previously, lazy teacher. Totally inappropriate and not suitable for an EYFS child.
