This is my 4 year old homework. I need google to do it, seriously maths has changed since I was at school.

My 4 year olds homework??

@AndyBarbersIntern

This is year 2 work. My DD did this during lockdown
Same here.

My (summer born) reception child can do this work. They covered 3D shapes in lockdown (she was at home so I know for certain the covered all aspects of this including vertices and DC knows the correct terms to use).

Having said that, I think the pictures make it quite an abstract concept and when DC did this they were asked to find these shapes around the home in real objects (like an orange for the sphere) and they learnt it with real things they could physically touch and explore rather than work from images which meant it made sense to my child. I think introducing the topic with these pictures is probably quite confusing.

SquirtleSquad · 19/03/2021 18:30

My twins are in reception and did 3D shapes, vertices, edges and faces during lockdown. I queried it with SIL who teaches EYFS and her school did the same.

skeggycaggy · 19/03/2021 18:32

@ByTheNine

We had the same for my reception aged child during lockdown - they had to do a shape hunt but also a sheet like that, so it's not just your school and probably not a mistake. It was fine, vertices is a funny word but it just means points so we used that instead.
Same here.
jessstan2 · 19/03/2021 18:35

I think it is good to start children off with things like that and gradually build up to puzzles. So many kids are confused by NVR. This will make her think and work things out.

Gatekeeper · 19/03/2021 18:37

Bloody hell...when I was 4 we had a sand and water tray in the class room and a wendy house with dressing up clothes. Stories from the teacher, singing , painting and practising letters was about the limit and thats what I think it should be like

Viviennemary · 19/03/2021 18:38

Who on earth set this work for a four year old. They must be totally clueless and inexperienced. Send it back. Can a four year old even read the question.

thecatandthevicar · 19/03/2021 18:40

I don't even think a 4 year old should be at school to be honest...

our system is wrong.

Defmy · 19/03/2021 18:43

That's a very lazy homework. Was this a recap of what was taught in class? Even so I can't believe the children are expected to recognise these terms in writing!

There are much better resources easily available to the teacher. You could use a Twinkl PPPT to complete this with your child. But he/she should have set something more appropriate.

year5teacher · 19/03/2021 18:49

I voted YABU because all vertices are is a fancy word for corners, and we do teach this in the summer term at my school. However I don’t really think it’s that helpful or necessary for reception children to know this and I also wouldn’t set it as homework.

QueQueQue · 19/03/2021 18:51

The worksheet is from Twinkl (they've deities the title though) and it's in the KS1 section

Iwillgotothegym · 19/03/2021 18:51

Why are you looking at the answers? Help your child do their best. If the answers are wrong the teacher can explain. If a lot get them wrong the they know it was too hard. That won’t happen if all the parents google the answers.

alibongo5 · 19/03/2021 18:52

Personally I think its crazy giving a 4 year old homework full stop.

I completely agree. And also with @thecatandthevicar that it is arguable that 4 year olds should even be in school. But if they are, they should certainly have some down time when they come home.

For the last time, I’m not giving her the answers I’m checking to see if she’s getting them right!

You needed google??
Hmm
My five year old was ok with this but he's not in school in the UK.

QueQueQue · 19/03/2021 18:53

Answer sheet!

My 4 year olds homework??
thecatandthevicar · 19/03/2021 18:54

You needed google??

there's always one 😂

year5teacher · 19/03/2021 18:55

@Alonelonelyloner well yeah, who the fuck knows what a vertex is unless they actually do something that involves that word or is a teacher??

Alonelonelyloner · 19/03/2021 18:57

Well I knew. I think most people on here do. I'm no teacher. If you are, your rude response is surprising.

Happymum12345 · 19/03/2021 19:01

Perhaps the teacher was desperate to find some homework and came across this quickly. It does look challenging but not impossible for reception if explained properly.
Imagine having your work put on an open forum for the world to critique during a pandemic. It’s not nice. Just tell the teacher if it’s too hard for your child.

alexdgr8 · 19/03/2021 19:01

i don't think homework should be set for this age group. not until age 7.

Flipflops85 · 19/03/2021 19:03

My Y2 child has done a similar exercise this term. She's at a fairly academic indie

It’s on the mainstream year 2 curriculum too. It often gets covered in year 1 for the higher ability children, usually alongside the physical shapes. I’d always start with these - as someone said diagrams are very abstract.

I agree it’s not appropriate for Reception. In terms of the EYFS, id expect them to use 3D shapes for printing, building or recognising them in the environment etc - potentially learning some mathematical language along the way. However I disagree that it’s ridiculously hard.

Smartiepants79 · 19/03/2021 19:03

That is not part of the eyfs curriculum.
Have no idea why a reception class teacher would be sending that home.

alexdgr8 · 19/03/2021 19:03

i would have no idea what a vertex is, like the vast majority of the population.

littlewhitestar · 19/03/2021 19:03

I'm nearly 50 and remember counting faces and vertices on 3D shapes in reception as extension work for the "top table" although they didn't call it that obviously. I guess it could be the same for your DD?
