To assume families with children too young to be vaccinated won’t be able to holiday overseas for years?

ohcarolina2001 · 18/03/2021 22:56

So various countries are welcoming vaccinated people. By autumn my partner and I should both have had both vaccines, but our 1 year old DD is not eligible for a vaccine and by the time all the trials etc have been done on progressively younger people, we are years away from her being vaccinated. AIBU to assume we can’t take her on her first overseas holiday any time soon, because there is no exemption for unvaccinated children who can of course still spread Covid-19?

The only possibility I can see is going to a country which doesn’t require anyone to be vaccinated - but surely these destinations are a much riskier prospect (with an unvaccinated toddler licking everything and no vaccine 100% effective anyway).

Looking at holiday websites, most package holidays seem to be sold out for autumn already. These can’t all have been bought by couples without kids and older couples with adult children, surely? Have families with kids who won’t be vaccinated booked too and are hoping for positive news that kids will be exempt from the requirement to have their vaccines before entry?

it's not really anyone's place
That did make me laugh. I thought I'd wandered onto the Downton Abbey set.

Sorry to be a downer but listening to today's news, it is highly unlikely that unessential travel to Europe will be legal this Summer. Low vaccinations and high exponential Third wave now being experiend in Germany, France Poland and other European countries. My DS has a honeymoon booked for June which he is able to cancel if the situation remains so dangerous for travel. I would be happy for all people to have their holidays, I wouldn't be happy about them coming back to UK to bring in new variants and put our success at the vaccination program into jeopardy. Forgive me please but I think it is irresponsible and selfish. At least wait until the country you want to go to has more than half the population vaccinated and the infection rate has fallen. We need to think globally, not individually.

Crazycatlady83 · 20/03/2021 13:51

@Ineke that’s one persons opinion published on a slow news day. The government has to weigh up all the opinions (one being the tourist industry employs 1.4 million people in this country and is worth £90 billion) Let’s wait for the review on the 12th April before jumping to conclusions.

minniemoocher · 20/03/2021 13:55

If anyone is allowed overseas this year (no guarantee) they will make arrangements for under 16's. AZ is currently in trials for 6+ and moderna is in trials for 6 months +

thecatandthevicar · 20/03/2021 14:12

We'll just have to find some "essential" reasons to go on holiday.

Enough already, most people in this country are breaking the lockdown every single day, don't give a crap about anyone else, tell everybody to "fuck off" (as seen on a very recent thread), think guidelines don't apply to them, live normally because of "bubbles"

so fine, but I am not sacrificing my holidays and my mental health when no one cares anyway!

bechr · 20/03/2021 14:18

Seems a bit pie in the sky to think that people will be going away in less than 2 months with the situation in Europe. I’m sure when they came up with that date they would have expected the Europeans to be much more advanced in their vaccine rollout.

TrustTheGeneGenie · 20/03/2021 14:20

@HalfGalHalfCake

I'm looking forward to a couple of years of holidays without screaming kids ruining it
Adults only has always been a thing Hmm

@thecatandthevicar can’t agree enough with you!
lockdownalli · 20/03/2021 14:39

I guess it depends on where you want to go.

Spain is currently on lockdown, cases are rising in Italy, Germany and France.

I don't think there's any harm in booking a holiday because it really gives you something to look forward to, but I wouldn't be relying on it. Too many variables with us being able to travel from UK to certain countries with or without vaccines or tests.

I have booked a summer holiday in UK (before kids break up for holidays as mine are older) but also have a holiday in Spain with my mates planned for autumn - keeping everything crossed but won't be amazed if we have to cancel.

TurquoiseDress · 20/03/2021 14:44

No I don't think will be the case

Lots of countries rely heavily on tourists during peak summer season

I can't see them banning small children without the vaccine, it's not even licensed for young children yet so you couldn't get it done even if you wanted to

IMO too much loss of income at stake, I can't see Spain turning down families who only have adults vaccinated

I’m still abiding by it luckily I don’t know many who are ignoring it all

But anyway are you ok with hotel quarantine? That’d put me off it esp with young dc.

QuentinInQuarantino · 20/03/2021 15:13

#Spain is currently on lockdown'

@lockdownalli is it? I'm waiting go for a friend in a bar in Spain as I type. If it is, nobody has told the Spanish!

lockdownalli · 20/03/2021 15:17

@QuentinInQuarantino

According to BBC
Spain is under a nationwide curfew until early May 2021.People are only allowed out in that period to go to work, for education, to buy medicine, or care for elderly people or children. Anyone aged over six must wear a face covering on public transport and in indoor public spaces nationwide. They are also compulsory outdoors in many regions.

QuentinInQuarantino · 20/03/2021 15:18

Yes the curfew is after 10pm. And we aren't allowed to leave our counties and we have a rule of 6 which is sometimes 4.

Curfew doesn’t mean lockdown. @QuentinInQuarantino is right. People have got more freedom in Spain right now than in the uk

Ps quentin , my sister is in Zarauz today. She says it’s damm busy

QuentinInQuarantino · 20/03/2021 15:21

Everything is open though and so as long as you're home by 10 life feels pretty much normal. I suppose that probably feels like lockdown to a lot of Spaniards but I have small dc and am in bed by then normally anyway!

lockdownalli · 20/03/2021 15:22

Fair enough if that's your idea of a summer holiday. It's not mine Grin

Most of my friends around the country have been doing pretty normal life. I’ve a few friends that have moved from one city to another despite the local restrictions , the ertzaintza has stopped them and asked them where are they going (it wasn’t allowed at that time to leave the town ) and they have allowed them carrying on
Rollmopsrule · 20/03/2021 15:24

I think kids will be exempt from a vaccination passport but will need a neg covid test.

QuentinInQuarantino · 20/03/2021 15:25

Oh @EasterIssland I wouldn't dare!! I think they're extra strict in the puente and Easter which is the only time we can go away anyway. We've booked a weekend in La Rioja instead and will hope for sunshine in Donostia! I do miss my little flat in Catalonia though.

thecatandthevicar · 20/03/2021 17:22

I'd rather quarantine at home frankly! Or at least chose my hotel, some of them are REALLY grim.

Otherwise, it will have to be a long enough holiday.

Donotfeedthebears · 20/03/2021 17:29

It’s not like anybody will be going on holiday, vaccine or no vaccine.

MrsPear · 20/03/2021 17:37

In Israel children are just simply not permitted in many places. They have trailed a Covid passport - no passport no entry and they have applied it to children. So they can’t go out apart from school. It was on the bbc. So all those without children and the retired will be very pleased. No more noise. If I knew this was going to be the childhood for my children then I would have thought twice. They are prisoners with only release for exercise for an hour and eduction - although that could be taken away with no notice.

Moomin12345 · 20/03/2021 17:40

I'm gong on holiday abroad in early July, can't wait. My friend spent a couple of months in the Canaries this winter with her newborn and she found it fab.

PantherPantherus · 20/03/2021 17:42

You won't need passports. Just get a dinghy and sail anywhere. Just say you don't remember where you came from.
