To ask cyclists to follow the rules!!!

summeriscomingsoon · 18/03/2021 16:14

Nearly hit by a cyclist going through a red light again as I was crossing the road. We have numerous offenders doing this.

Also going on the pavement to avoid traffic jams.

Cycling has increased so much since lockdown and great health benefits but some of them make me mad!!!

Aibu to expect them to behave as if they were a car on the road and stick to the rules.

I wasn't saying cyclists were using the pavement or the road - there are no cyclists there

Sbk28 · 19/03/2021 23:05

@KarmaViolet

Everything said on this thread is absolutely true of all cyclists in all circumstances, and I can confirm that because only yesterday I was nearly run down by a cyclist who was riding on the pavement straight through a red light, dressed entirely in black and almost invisible despite the high lumen flashing beam that dazzled me, dawdling along delaying traffic at a dangerously fast 35mph, dressed entirely in Lycra just like Miss Marple.

And I bet the bastard hadn't paid any road tax since 1937 Angry

Superb.
Blockedoff · 20/03/2021 06:32

What research or data do you have to say it's newer cyclists that don't know the rules @Xenia?

Or have you just made that decision based on your own rambling thoughts?

Because it sounds utter bollocks to me.

NewPapaGuinea · 20/03/2021 06:59

Very easy to misunderstand when you said cyclists are entitled twats and that the council spent huge amounts of money on unused cycle paths. You should be directing your anger towards the council. What they probably had was budget left over and needed to spend it.

MsTSwift · 20/03/2021 07:04

Seriously all you cyclist moaners need to adopt a “can’t beat em join em” attitude. I do most local errands on my shopper bike much quicker easier and better for environment also no parking faff.

Also putting my bike on a turbo and pedalling daily whilst watching Netflix I’ve lost 2 stone! Get your fat bottoms out of your cars

QuidditchQueen · 20/03/2021 07:06

YANBU
I live near a park rhat was closed to traffic ‘due to covid’ Hmm natch but bit to sanctimonious cyclists who now use it in large peletons —because they have tiny dicks—terrorising pedestrians more than the cars ever did.

Blockedoff · 20/03/2021 07:18

@QuidditchQueen is the park closed to female cyclists then?

@MsTSwift could you link what turbo to use please? I've been considering this, but not had a particular one recommended. Thank you?

YoYoYumYum · 20/03/2021 07:53

YABU. There'd be virtually no accidents and no road deaths if everyone - cyclists, pedestrians and motorists - followed the rules.

So all 3 types of users break some rules but cyclists seem to be the most hated group. Why is this?

What about the electric scooters whizzing along the pavements or in parks where cycling is banned? But that's another issue altogether.

LongDistanceClaret · 20/03/2021 07:59

YANBU. Of course they should stop at red lights etc. If I am a pedestrian in a place I have right of way, and a cyclist is doing a dick-head manoeuvre , I always remember that if we collide, they will (generally) come off much worse than me.

summeriscomingsoon · 20/03/2021 08:39

I've never heard drivers defend other bad drivers. Quite the opposite.

But the cyclists rushing to deflect or defend is staggering. You sound like a cult.

I'll say it again. I was nearly hit but cyclists continually going through red lights as I'm crossing the road. Not all but quite a lot of them do it. It's a real problem.

Chanjer · 20/03/2021 08:48

Literally every cyclist itt has said that they don't like bad cyclists though 🤷

Blockedoff · 20/03/2021 09:10

I simply don't believe that you're nearly hit often @summeriscomingsoon !

I think you're massively exaggerating.

We have repeat offenders.

@Noodlewave

Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them. Motorists are afraid that a cyclist will delay them. Cyclists are afraid that a motorist will kill them.
This. A thousand times this.
DdraigGoch · 20/03/2021 10:10

Because motorists are an impatient lot who detest having to wait for a safe place to overtake. Half of their complaints are nothing to do with safety, it's all about having to slow down - moans about men in lycra on country lanes etc. Yet when they get stuck in traffic during the rush hour it does not occur to them that if more people cycled there wouldn't be the same congestion in city centres.

What about the electric scooters whizzing along the pavements or in parks where cycling is banned? But that's another issue altogether.
Oh god those things are lethal. I was walking in central Liverpool in December and was passed by a man and a woman riding the same scooter. They had little control of the thing on the narrow pavement and managed to collide with a parked car. It's illegal to use the things on pavements and unless you're hiring it they're also illegal to use on public roads.

Are these terrorising tiny-dicked pelotons cycling in fact, on a road then that has in fact just been closed to motorised vehicles rather than 'traffic'? How can that be so terrifying to pedestrians, who presumably are using the pedestrian footpaths, and looking left and right before they cross the road?

@summeriscomingsoon

You are joking right? Never heard drivers sympathising about how unfair it is about speed cameras, parking wardens, having to slow down for cyclists, having to watch out for kids, 20 mph zones, too many pedestrian crossings? Never seen a load of comments in support of a driver who killed a cyclist because the cyclist must have being doing something wrong, the Lycra-wearing twat? You have a sheltered life. Or maybe you think all those things put in place to protect vulnerable road users from bad drivers are “a war on the motorist”.

Sure, drivers condemn what they think of as “bad driving”, but they set the bar for “bad” so very very high that drivers can do some pretty dreadful dangerous things and no one bats an eyelid.

summeriscomingsoon · 20/03/2021 10:46

I've heard drivers complain about the rules etc but not defending bad drivers. Just my experience.

Saw two cyclists go through red lights this morning. One at a busy junction. It is a problem.

Maybe cyclists need to pass a road test too. Or some sort of road training.

Why would a test help? Do you really think that these people think that they aren't meant to stop at red lights? I think it's highly likely that they're dickheads, not idiots.

In the same way, the drivers that whizz past schools at 40 have passed their driving test. Getting all drivers to do an additional test will not deter them, but will inconvenience law abiding drivers.

Tinygem · 20/03/2021 10:51

YANBU, get so tired of seeing cyclists making their own rules up, jumping up on pavements, running red lights, going the wrong way on one way systems. It's as if they don't think the rules of the road apply to them.

KarmaViolet · 20/03/2021 10:52

Most adult cyclists have a driving licence.

Doh...complaining about the rules is defending bad drivers! The rules aren’t a problem if you drive well and considerations because you would be doing that stuff anyway.

That’s what I mean about setting the “bad driver” bar so high that actual bad driving is just seen as normal.

The drivers who killed 400 people didn’t think they were bad drivers either.

NailsNeedDoing · 20/03/2021 10:55

So all 3 types of users break some rules but cyclists seem to be the most hated group. Why is this?

Because they cause the most inconvenience to other people. I’ve never had to wait up to ten minutes for a motorist or pedestrian to slowly do their thing without any consideration for the people stuck behind them, but I have had to wait for cyclists plenty of times. They have the option of moving aside or stopping when they know they are on roads that mean they can’t be overtaken, and they choose to carry on anyway, because they are selfish. That is why they deserve the most hate. Although personally I wouldn’t choose the world hate, I just choose to give a fuck about them as little as they choose to give a fuck about anyone else.
