To ask cyclists to follow the rules!!!

summeriscomingsoon · 18/03/2021 16:14

Nearly hit by a cyclist going through a red light again as I was crossing the road. We have numerous offenders doing this.

Also going on the pavement to avoid traffic jams.

Cycling has increased so much since lockdown and great health benefits but some of them make me mad!!!

Aibu to expect them to behave as if they were a car on the road and stick to the rules.

PattyPan · 19/03/2021 18:44

My DP has a car, although cycling is his preferred method of transport. It was recently written off due to a dent in the door and the wing mirror being knocked off, which only cost a couple of hundred for us to repair. The bar for a write off can be very low!

Sbk28 · 19/03/2021 18:52

@skirk64

Your comment is truly shocking. You are actively encouraging stereotyping sexes, races and... Cyclists Confused.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 19/03/2021 18:52

@PattyPan ok, the damage to my car was much more extensive than a dent in the door but I appreciate you're trying to minimise or dismiss my claim that a cyclist caused serious damage to my car.

Chanjer · 19/03/2021 19:00

Cyclist not injured and a vehicle written off. It must have been pretty spectacular tbf

I once ran into the back of a bus at about 20mph (the alternative was hitting the child that ran out in front of me) and it wasn't pretty

MsTSwift · 19/03/2021 19:35

Yabu. Could car drivers take more care one drove into me the other day left with very bruised arm 🙄🙄. Yes it was entirely his fault he pulled over and was in tears.

Oldsu · 19/03/2021 19:35

@Chanjer

Cyclists are as dangerous to pedestrians as cars are to cyclists but this is always totally overlooked.

Evidence?

Want some? then I will give you some, my 16 year old Niece is brain damaged, in a wheel chair, doubly incontinent, she cant communicate apart from screaming and she has violent fits she will never get job, marry or give my Sister a grandchild, my Sister had to give up work to care for her, she will need care for the rest of her life, Why, because she made the mistake off opening her front gate only to be hit by a bike going at speed on the pavement, she hit her head on the pavement and that was it - game over, the bike didn't stop and there was no CCTV so she (yes it was a woman) got away with destroying a child's life, if she had hit her with a hammer or large stone instead of a bike she would have been charged with at least GBH of not attempted murder. I will every time challenge any adult (not with a child) if I see them riding on the pavement and am not polite about it either.

Oh FFS. You've got me, @Chanjer, I make up lies about cyclists on Mumsnet. Sure.
Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 19/03/2021 19:42

@Oldsu oh my goodness, that is horrific. My heart goes out to your niece and sister. How devastating.

Angel2702 · 19/03/2021 19:47

Are you joking behave like cars and follow the rules? Speeding, using phones, mounting pavements, not indicating.

All road users should follow the rules there are car drivers and cyclists that don’t follow the rules, let’s not pretend car drivers are rule abiding perfect drivers.

Not too hard to imagine. Avoiding a collision by swerving off the road and hitting a wall/tree. Certainly a rare event but not implausible.
Sadsiblingatsea · 19/03/2021 19:52

Plenty of dangerous drivers Op. perhaps save some disapproval for them too?

kaleishorrid · 19/03/2021 21:08

@Beseigedbykillersquirrels

YANBU. Cyclists want it all ways. They want cycle lanes, so they build them. Then they don't use them but stay on the roads. They expect people to pootle along behind them as they cycle along on their merry way. No thought or consideration for anyone else who wants to get to work on time. However, they are not prepared to wait behind pedestrians on shared paths and often ring their twatty bells with the expectation that they will part like the red sea and let them through so they can continue on their merry way. I once was stuck behind a cyclist for miles and managed to overtake on the one stretch of road for five miles where it was safe to do so. I then waited at temporary traffic lights for a few moments and in that time, the cyclist had caught up to me, overtaken me at the lights and made sure I was stuck behind him again for the remaining miles of my journey. Why would anyone behave so utterly selfishly? Maybe it's just the cyclists where I live that have exceptionally poor manners. I hope it is, but reading some of these comments I'm not so sure.
Do you live near me? Cyclists round here are absolute entitled twats. Where my parents live in the north the local council has spent an absolute fortune on building cycle lanes. I have yet to see a single cyclist on them. But it has narrowed the roads for motorists and annoyed all of the residents.
kaleishorrid · 19/03/2021 21:16

@1Morewineplease

They never will! As long as you are in a planet destroying electric vehicle on FOUR wheels , and THEY are SAVING THE PLANET on two , then you are an evil bastard. It really doesn't matter if they jump a red light or ride at 40mph on a narrow pavement, they are wearing Lycra , therefore they are exceptional human beings! Funny that in Holland, Denmark etc... people just get on an ordinary bike and just cycle to where they want to go, while wearing ordinary clothes. Yet in UK, you must wear Tour De France standard Lycra skins.
GrinGrin made me laugh because it's so true around here
Solidaritea · 19/03/2021 21:45

@kaleishorrid

Our local council has spent money on cycle tracks. I cycle on the road. Because it's safer than going along a cycle track through everyone's driveways, where pedestrians often walk in the cycle section. I'd rather annoy a driver a bit than get knocked of my bike or hit a pedestrian.

According to you, I should be thankful that the council spent money on these dangerous cycle tracks and use them despite the fact that they're not fit for purpose, right? Or have I misunderstood your complaint?

Macncheeseballs · 19/03/2021 21:49

I don't wear lycra and I cycle

Pan2 · 19/03/2021 21:51

YABU

and as usual with drivers exhibiting an embarrassing level of lack of self-awareness.

FFSAllTheGoodOnesArereadyTaken · 19/03/2021 22:04

The shared use cycle lanes round me are basically just pavements. With some extra lines on that pedestrians ignore. There is absolutely no point in them, you have to go so slowly to make sure pedestrians are safe and you have to slow down to cross a road every two seconds and people reversing out of their drivea can't see you. They are a complete waste of money.

FFSAllTheGoodOnesArereadyTaken · 19/03/2021 22:08

I dont get why this has turned into a cyclists vs non cyclists thread. I cycle. I hate shitty dangerous cycling (and shitty dangerous drivers). The two are not mutually exclusive.

KarmaViolet · 19/03/2021 22:17

Everything said on this thread is absolutely true of all cyclists in all circumstances, and I can confirm that because only yesterday I was nearly run down by a cyclist who was riding on the pavement straight through a red light, dressed entirely in black and almost invisible despite the high lumen flashing beam that dazzled me, dawdling along delaying traffic at a dangerously fast 35mph, dressed entirely in Lycra just like Miss Marple.

And I bet the bastard hadn't paid any road tax since 1937 Angry

I know a few places like that. On the main road you can whizz along safely at a decent speed. On the adjacent cycle track you have to cross numerous side roads. I do wonder if it's one of those things where the local authority has had money in its budget to install cycle lanes and just puts them in without thought for how they'd be used.

How are they selfish?

You have misunderstood me. Nobody wanted these cycle lanes - this is an A road in which I had never seen a cyclist

kaleishorrid · 19/03/2021 22:32

Sorry pressed post too soon. I have never seen a cyclist on that toad in the 30 years that my parents have lived. This money was wasted

kaleishorrid · 19/03/2021 22:33

Road not toad
