Doesn’t like any vegetables at all?
I was just watching a video about a man who wanted to find recipes he could eat that don’t contain vegetables as he doesn’t like any veg.

I mean come on.. there’s as many flavours in different vegetables as there are colours in the world.. yet he would proclaim to ‘hate all colours’

I just don’t get it. Kids I sort of understand; especially when they descend from fussy parents. But I just think ‘grow up’ when I read about adults not touching vegetables. I’m not talking about “I don’t like broccoli or carrots” - won’t eat vegetables at all.

And the “salad? Do I look like a rabbit?” Slur that comes from people

Who won’t eat anything remotely green or healthy, that saying really boils my piss. Just say no thank you?!

I know IABU as it’s none of my business but it just made me roll my eyes and would be interested to hear others opinions on it.

@LifesLittleDeciders - I just want to say that you sound like a very understanding and lovely person.
It’s very difficult to say how I’d feel in that situation but I think it’s best to take each day as it comes. Communicate, tell him how you feel and be honest and open with each other.

gabsdot45 · 18/03/2021 11:30

I'm not keen on vegatables and would quite happily live the rest of my life without eating anything green ever again .
I make myself eat veg though because I feel it's important to do so for the nutrition.
I'll usuall go for salad or soup rather than cooked veg though.

I've never liked veg actually. As a child I always refused veg and I basically didn't eat a single vegatable apart from sweet corn and potatoes until I was in my 20s.

I'm pretty healthy although I am overweight.

AjayChe · 18/03/2021 11:42

I don't understand how anyone could not like fried onions. Food of the Gods.

Lexilooo · 18/03/2021 11:54

I describe myself as a veg dodger and DH despairs that I don't eat cauliflower, peas, brussels, parsnips etc but actually there are lots of vegetables I do like just not the traditional roast dinner ones.

I love mushrooms, peppers, aubergine, courgette, leeks, water chestnuts, bean sprouts, spinach, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and manage a few veggie meals a week.

In my case its the opposite. I rarely eat meat.
No, I'm not a vegetarian, and do not have a problem with the concept of eating meat.
But most meat, and lots of vegetables I just cannot eat. I have a real food fussiness.
In my case it is definitely upbringing, and realised it stemmed from school dinners.
In my day (I am late 60s), there was no choice of school dinner; we were made to take it; and made to eat it. So much of my food fussiness comes from this.
On the few occassions where we had a salad, it was often spoiled by having some ghastly protein with it, such as some kind of tinned fish, and the entire salad would be coated in greasy oil, making it unedible (to me). I was eventually (at secondary school), allowed to take a packed lunch, for which we had to produce a 'doctor's letter', bizarre!
The meat thing is that most days we were given a thick slab of cold roast meat (presumably beef), boiled cabbage, lumpy mashed potato and brown jelly gravy.
At the time, I wondered why they bothered to 'mash' the potatoes, and only later realised it was re constituted powder. And no, I still dislike mashed potato, and never eat cold roast meat, and it was 30 years before I could eat cabbage again.
When I occassionally eat roast meat, I will have just 1 slice, very thinly cut, and it must be hot from the oven, never cold the next day.

Gingernaut · 18/03/2021 12:02

There are certain veggies I won't eat

Cruciferous veg - Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale etc

Broccoli

Beans - I can eat them blended into sauces, but not whole.

Sweetcorn

Mushrooms

I can eat them to be polite, but won't go out of my way to eat them

I will eat aubergines, sweet potato and I like most salad veg (not radish)

People who actively avoid all veg are doing themselves no favours.

I think some families eat more than others. When my DSis was first dating her now-DH she visited his house for the weekend. He'd told his mum she likes fruit, so she bought her one banana. Shock They had a roast dinner, and his mum cooked one carrot between her and my DSis, because none of the others would eat vegetables!

The next time she went to visit, she took a bag of apples and some satsumas and carrots so she could have them on the journeys and if her and her boyfriend went out for the day. Grin

I have to admit, I'm not very keen on bananas and some types of mushroom — it's definitely a texture thing for me. I'll eat stuffed mushrooms because they're roasted, but I'm not keen on them in a sauce unless they're cut up very small. Part of it is a mental thing as well though — "slug stroganoff" from school really stuck with me! It was halved mushrooms in a cream sauce, and the sauce went grey from the spores and it was just all soft and squelchy. I'm not sure I could eat it now to be honest (and I'm generally an adventurous eater).

tillyandmilly · 18/03/2021 12:08

I dislike fruit and vegetables- can’t eat fruit anyway as gives me stomach gripes from the acidity - I do eat vegetables reluctantly though for my health - I eat them first as a meal to get it over with - like medicine! I also take a multi vit as well

Swordfish1 · 18/03/2021 12:10

Don't even get me started on the whole won't east chicken if its got a bone in it thing. I know 2 adults like this!
But they will eat the exact same bit of chicken if its cut off the bone.
It's Bloody loony.

For people who don't eat any veg at all. What one earth do you eat with your roast dinner? Just meat and potato? For me the veg is a really important part of a roast dinner.

BungleandGeorge · 18/03/2021 12:11

I think the people I know who have more extreme eating patterns probably have other medical diagnoses (often undiagnosed) e.g. ASD, eating disorders, severe allergies. Most of them don’t expect others to conform to them, so really it’s not up to judge!

Bimblybomeyelash · 18/03/2021 12:12

It blows my mind that there are people who don’t eat veg. I can’t imagine how boring their food must be. Lots of meat and potatoes I suppose?

Fifthtimelucky · 18/03/2021 12:13

My husband is like this. He doesn't like any vegetables (other than mushrooms) or salad- type stuff. He will occasionally grudgingly eat carrots and peas.

He also won't eat any fresh fruit at all, but likes raisins.

Fortunately neither of my children (now adults) have taken after him.

Cam77 · 18/03/2021 12:13

Generally speaking Brits just boil or microwave vegetables (or roast for special occasions), with either a sprinkle of salt or swimming in gravy.
Therein lies the problem.

You know what. I thought that every time I read similar threads people talk about boiled cabbage and such. Obviously there is going to be some information bias here and people who grew up with different type of cooking aren't here or commenting (kind of like with relationships on here, isn't it), but yeah. It sounds like that.
Shinyletsbebadguys · 18/03/2021 12:18

@CounsellorTroi

Exdh was terrible for this , taught by his dm that vegetables and fish were for posh people and disgusting. Sparks flew when he complained about me eating fish fingers ( alright hardly the epitome of culinary excellence but I was hankering after my university days staple of a fish finger sandwich) and was quite silly when at a wedding some fish was put in front of him (that I ended up eating )

I make myself eat fish occasionally for healthy diet reasons but it’s far from being my favourite food. I wouldn’t be happy at being given fish at a formal occasion without any choice in the matter.

To be fair I used the minimising phrase " was quite silly " when the actual behaviour was fake gagging , holding his nose and loudly proclaiming it was disgusting. There is not being happy and then there is being a performative idiot.
Butchyrestingface · 18/03/2021 12:21

I don't understand how anyone can dislike WATER, but I've known a few. ¯\(ツ)

Lacucuracha · 18/03/2021 12:22

YANBU. I don't trust anyone who doesn't like fruit.

Meowchickameowmeow · 18/03/2021 12:23

I really couldn't give a tiny rats arse what other people eat or refuse to eat, I certainly wouldn't spend any time getting riled up about it.

CounsellorTroi · 18/03/2021 12:23

Shinyletsbebadguys. Gosh I would not have done that!

MishaHarrow · 18/03/2021 12:23
@MishaHarrow but a salad can have that in!
I make a salad with roast chicken, Parmesan, handful of quinoa, salad leaves, cucumber, spring onion, tomatoes...
or roasted veg with cous cous and feta
True...but usually salads dont tend to have enough chicken or similar.

idontlikealdi · 18/03/2021 12:25

My husband used to hate vegetables because his mother was of a generation where you put the cabbage on Saturday to eat on Sunday. He has learnt to like them.

However, htere are a lot sensory issues that would now be diagnosed in children that are undiagnosed in adults so I wouldn't force it. Neither would I pander to making different meals if DH didn't want what I was cooking. My kids eat all sorts.

CounsellorTroi · 18/03/2021 12:26

And it’s really fucking rude to express disgust, make faces or say yuck when people are enjoying food you don’t like. I’ve known some people like that.

sqirrelfriends · 18/03/2021 12:26

Me neither OP, I love veg and get cravings if I'm away from home for whatever reason.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 18/03/2021 12:26

@CounsellorTroi

Shinyletsbebadguys. Gosh I would not have done that!
Sorry ! I didn't mean to suggest you would. I used quite minimising language so it wasn't clear. Ha theres good reasons he is an exdh as you can see . Grin
