To think I am not the only one who thinks about doing stupid things?

I don’t know if there’s a name for it, but that weird urge to do something really foolish, even though you know it’s stupid.

I was just using the shears and was thinking about putting my tongue on the blade (I’m obviously not going to do that), but these odd thoughts just pop up. I’m in no way thinking about self harm or even feel low, so I can’t really explain it. Does anyone else have these odd urges or should I be worried?

Yes on the motorway, what if I just really sharply turned the steering wheel to the right?

Pandoraslastchance · 17/03/2021 18:37

Mine is losing my shoe/phone/purse/keys etc over ledges or down draons

PantherPantherus · 17/03/2021 18:38

Yes, on the motorway too. Drive into one of the bridge supports on the left where it rises up from the hard shoulder. But I always refrain. Wait until I am on the normal single carriageway roads.

When I go I want to take some others with me. And they know who they are.

elizabethdraper · 17/03/2021 18:41

I want to jump from heights, or drive my car at speed in to certain places on the motorway

calimommy · 17/03/2021 18:45

I have learned something new today! I didn't realise it had a name either. I've had this for years, I'll be walking across a bridge and hold extra tight to my handbag to quell the urge to fling it in the water. Or I'll be chatting nicely to people at a party and envision myself suddenly vomiting everywhere. 😂 I have yet to follow through with any of these activities thankfully.

Hendalle · 17/03/2021 18:46

Yes I have this too and feel better to see I’m not alone.
My ones are generally silly and along the lines of being on the tube and suddenly having the urge to just start screaming (to see what happens), or wanting to start throwing packs of loo roll around in the supermarket, or juggling apples.. daft stuff.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/03/2021 18:51

The bridge/platform one is called High Place Phenomenon aka the call of the void. I get the imp of the perverse. Usually in boring meetings where I envision scribbling on a colleague's face with my pen!

CaffeineAndCrochet · 17/03/2021 18:54

I get this but it's often wanting to say things to people that I know would offend them, or reply to their Facebook posts with some kind of insult.

I did once burn my thumb on a car cigarette lighter but that was more because I didn't believe it was as hot as it was.

megletsecond · 17/03/2021 18:54

Radio 1 have just played a song called Intrusive Thoughts.
Always makes me think of MN.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 17/03/2021 18:56

If I'm on a bridge I often wonder about grabbing a stranger by the ankles and tipping them over the edge!

Badgerstmary · 17/03/2021 18:56

I used to get this on the big wheel at a fair or on the tube. What if I jumped...

XenoBitch · 17/03/2021 18:57

I have heard it called "call of the void". It is normal.

user1490814754 · 17/03/2021 18:57

Intrusive thoughts can feel like this. Can be symptom of anxiety or OCD

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 17/03/2021 18:58

No, but I've read a lot of these threads over the years.

They used to kind of amuse me, but thanks to peri menopause they now make me anxious.

Do my warning is not about sharp knives or cliffs, but about enjoying slightly scary films/books:threads while you can 😂😂

Be safe!

Tal45 · 17/03/2021 18:59

I often think 'what if I just took off all my clothes and started dancing naked on this table' obviously I'd absolutely never do it!! I have suffered with intrusive thoughts before though so I'm careful not to overthink it.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 17/03/2021 18:59

I've got a rechargeable lighter thing for candles, like a mini tazer. Every time I use it I think about using it against my skin to see how much it hurts Hmm

FreeAt50 · 17/03/2021 19:00

@MaidofKent78

Yep. I've always wanted to know what would happen if I pull up the handbrake whilst driving at speed....
It's scary as hell. Happened to me once when I had an absolute knobhead ex in the car.
Iceskatingfan · 17/03/2021 19:01

I get almost an urge to jump when I am up high somewhere, and feel like I have to suppress this instinct, seems it is this call of the void thing!

BurgundyBells · 17/03/2021 19:02

I used to be terrified I’d shout something during a play at the theatre. The temptation is so great

Or at a funeral. I have this horrible feeling that I may laugh or shout something out.

saveforthat · 17/03/2021 19:03

I want to drive onto a vehicle carrier if I am driving behind one but I think the Italian Job is responsible for that Smile

Iceskatingfan · 17/03/2021 19:03

And thinking about it I get the same urge to jump into the sea if I’m on a boat or onto electrical lines when I’m at a tube station if I’m close to the edge. Weird!

Iceskatingfan · 17/03/2021 19:04

It’s odd that’s it’s suposed to be a safety mechanism because I would have thought that if you visualise something you’re more likely to do it not less? I mean they tell atheletes to visualise scoring a goal etc!

Hortuslover · 17/03/2021 19:05

I’ve had a few of these from jumping overboard on a ship to jumping in the tiger enclosure at a zoo!

I have also had visions of me randomly kicking shit out of MIL mid way through her talking. For what it’s worth, I’m not a violent person and I love MIL to bits but the thought makes me internally shudder!

GoWalkabout · 17/03/2021 19:05

I can't use the hand blender without imagining the blade injuring my tongue, though why I would have it near my tongue is a mystery.

moita · 17/03/2021 19:06

Agree with the tube - I'm not and have never been suicidal but I have a fleeting thought of jumping in front of the train as it comes into the station.

Throwing my car key into a high refuse bin is another one or a clothes bank. Very odd.
