How do you make your house smell nice?

Posting for traffic. I have an interview tomorrow and they're coming to my home, interviewing me for a cleaning role. Going to have a long night of cleaning as I've let things slide a bit but I've also noticed it smells a bit stale. I know that sounds gross but it definitely smells a bit of old cooking, burgers, etc. It doesn't smell fresh. I don't have any carpet, upholstery or air freshener type things though I could nip out quickly in the morning if I have to. What can I do??

Best thing is to open windows.

Dazedandconfused2021 · 16/03/2021 21:49

Open all the windows. My house always smells so nice if I open the windows for a few hours. Good luck!

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 16/03/2021 21:49

Open windows front and back and let the fresh air blow through. Seriously, it’s the best way. Bonus if you mow the lawn at the same time and let the fresh cut grass smell in.

Brew some strong coffee just before they’re due.

WellIsntThisA · 16/03/2021 21:50

Just curious - Why your home? Never heard this.

Open the windows, fresh air and cleaning will help a lot and if you want to add air freshener or use a scented floor cleaner or something but definitely open the windows.

Coronawireless · 16/03/2021 21:51

Open all windows and doors for an hour before they come.
Scented candle if you have one, placed as low in the house as possible to let the scent rise through the house. Light it about an hour before they come.
Wash clothes with fabric conditioner and drape them on a radiator to dry.
Dab some fabric conditioner on a warm radiator or lightbulb.

Just seeing the other comments. There was none when I was typing.

GracieLouFreebushh · 16/03/2021 21:51

I think cleaning floors/surfaces with zoflora and really hot water. Freshen upholstery with spray of water mixed with a nice fabric softener. If you have a dryer I think that always makes the house smell nice!

Some essential oils in a diffuser or oil burner if you have one?

Crankley · 16/03/2021 21:52

I agree, open the windows.

StoneofDestiny · 16/03/2021 21:52

Open the windows - don't use air fresheners - they always smell like you are trying to hide smell 😂

Tangledtresses · 16/03/2021 21:53

What is it with zoflora here?? I've never used it in my life... and I bloody love cleaning 😂

murbblurb · 16/03/2021 21:54

I tried zoflora the other day for the first time - diluted to half as strong as the instructions and it still stank the kitchen out for a day and a half. Houses should not smell of anything!

Strange interview!!

LolaSmiles · 16/03/2021 21:54

Another vote here for opening the windows.

MegaScared · 16/03/2021 21:54

We definitely don't open the windows enough, actually never really. I know we should but we have a cat that isn't allowed to go outside so we just tend to keep the windows shut. I'll try and get them open for some time beforehand. I have some incense so I could burn that too.

Fresh laundry drying out of sight or just a facecloths dipped in water and fabric conditioner hung on radiators out of site, lemon and vanilla essence (or coffee or orange, whatever you have) simmering in a pot of water on the stove or a drop of essential oil on radiators.

Aquamarine1029 · 16/03/2021 21:55

Make sure all surfaces/walls near your cooker are properly scrubbed to get the grease smell off.

ThunderSocks · 16/03/2021 21:57

Definitely windows open. Bicarb sprinkled on carpets, left for half an hour (or overnight) then hoovered up helps too.

thelegohooverer · 16/03/2021 21:59

Get rid of any source of bad smells - litter tray/bins, and open the windows to get a good cross breeze.

You might want to change the filter in your extractor fan of food smells are a problem,

I’d avoid any artificial smells. Nothing smells as good as clean. Although I have been known to spray a squirt of furniture polish behind a radiator back in the days when I cared what my mil thought!

speakout · 16/03/2021 22:01

I can't imagine living in a house that isn't aired regularly.
No amount of smelly stuff will disguise stale air.
My windows are opened every day- in summer I live with open windows and doors, even in the coldest weather I open my windows for a short while.
Even just 10 minutes makes a massive difference.
OP could you just lock the cat in a bedroom with a snack for half an hour?

Alternista · 16/03/2021 22:01

Baby powder or bicarb on your carpets, hoover up in the morning.

Clean greasy surfaces with water and vinegar tonight.

Open the windows first thing tomorrow.

Just before they come, put a few drops of whatever you own that smells nice in a jug or vase, then pour a couple of inches of boiling water on it. Lemon, zoflora, fabric conditioner, even perfume!

Good luck :)

Happenchance · 16/03/2021 22:04

Empty your bins and recycling or put them outside.

If you have some baking soda put some in bowls around the house.

Stuff newspaper in any wet shoes and put some in your fridge to neutralize any odour that may be coming from there.

LemonRoses · 16/03/2021 22:05

Open windows.
Clean kitchen sink with bleach.
Wipe off surfaces.
Bring some flowers inside.
Use Mr Sheen or similar polish around front door frame and on every suitable surface.
Just before they arrive make fresh coffee.

Wingedharpy · 16/03/2021 22:09

You should have the windows open all the time these people are with you with Covid about - and tell them this is why. I'd give you brownie points for it. Good luck.

PermanentTemporary · 16/03/2021 22:12

Open windows
Bleach the loo
Empty bins and get the main bins away from the house
Run water down all the drains
Wash soft furnishings like cushion covers
Flowers - not loads, just a bunch of fresh daffodils or something

Happenchance · 16/03/2021 22:20

Will the interviewers be wearing masks the entire time they are at your house? If they will be, your house will just smell like their breath (to them anyway) Grin

VestaTilley · 16/03/2021 22:23

Open all windows now and an hour before hand to air the rooms out.
