How do you make your house smell nice?

Posting for traffic. I have an interview tomorrow and they're coming to my home, interviewing me for a cleaning role. Going to have a long night of cleaning as I've let things slide a bit but I've also noticed it smells a bit stale. I know that sounds gross but it definitely smells a bit of old cooking, burgers, etc. It doesn't smell fresh. I don't have any carpet, upholstery or air freshener type things though I could nip out quickly in the morning if I have to. What can I do??

I would be a little concerned that someone working as a cleaning professional wouldn't know the basics of how to keep a home smelling fresh.

Fresh air every time!

@speakout

I can't imagine living in a house that isn't aired regularly. No amount of smelly stuff will disguise stale air. My windows are opened every day- in summer I live with open windows and doors, even in the coldest weather I open my windows for a short while. Even just 10 minutes makes a massive difference. OP could you just lock the cat in a bedroom with a snack for half an hour?
It's awful actually and I lust after having my windows and doors wide open all day, especially in Summer. But the house definitely needs airing regularly so I'm going to have to do that, shut cat in one room for a short time just to get some air in. I'll shut him in my bedroom when he's having a nap on my bed, I doubt he'll even notice!

Is this a wind up? You're interviewing for a job as a cleaner but you don't know how to make your house smell clean and fresh?

They will likely be wearing masks so I would perhaps concentrate on de-cluttering, tidying, dusting? If they aren't wearing masks perhaps politely insist they put them on as you do not want to risk catching Covid. That way they won't be able to smell anything!

I still don’t get how they are allowed inside your house during Covid lockdown restrictions. Why isn’t the interview being conducted via Zoom?

I have an old (rental) house that always smells old and musty, no matter how clean it is. I open all windows and spray on the 1001 scented carpet spray, leave for 10 minutes and then hoover. Leave the windows open so smell isn't overpowering. It definitely removes the burger/food smells.
