Piers Morgan

I'm on a group whatsapp chat with some friends. Mixed group, mostly white, one Asian, one black girl, 3 gay. I'm female, white, straight. Group is just mates talking nonesense, sharing memes etc.

White male posts a petition to reinstate Piers Morgan at GMB. Follows it up with 'I love Piers Morgan, he speaks for lots of people.'

I found this in poor taste and said so, cue a big kerfuffle, mostly denying that there was anything untoward about it. Black girl leaves the group. When contacted to ask why she left, she says she 'has a lot on and the group was a distraction' which they accept.

For context, he has form for stirring the pot, the party line is to condone, that's just x, we all know what he's like.

Was I being unreasonable to take issue?

Another newspaper.
I’m signing off. Sometimes there will be no resolution, you are obviously very set on just seeing one side of the dice.
Have a lovely weekend

Isn't most of this kind of a red herring? Or alternately, proving the point?

No wonder some people think PM is an ass, or disagree with some of his views. No wonder some people dislike the kind of typically late Victorian upper-caste views regarding other groups of people, held by Churchill among many others of pretty much every civilisation on Earth.

And...

No wonder some people think PM is kind of funny, or doesn't back down when he gets into an important issue, or is willing to say things a lot of people think and would like to be said openly. No wonder a lot of people admire what Churchill did, or his sometimes startling political perception, or thought he was a pretty brilliant writer.

Which is why basically telling someone, supposedly a friend, that they can't state these kinds of things without it being beyond the pale, and especially can't object to the fact that people think they should be beyond the pale, is pretty dumb.

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2021 21:54

Not so much fun when people like PM question your right to live in your own country, as he did to Professor Kehinde Andrews in the video clip I shared here

I watched your video clip. I saw something rather different.

You would.
Iamthewombat · 19/03/2021 22:01

You don’t know the first thing about me, but carry on with your prejudice against anyone who doesn’t think exactly like you.

Strangekindofwoman · 19/03/2021 22:03

I know all I need to know about you from your posts on this thread.

User133847 · 19/03/2021 22:03

Churchill had some abhorrent views, said some abhorrent things and did did some abhorrent things in his career/life.

He also won the war and saved us from Fascism. He's rightly revered for that.

It's hard for many people to accept both sentences together as true. For people like Piers Morgan, a hero (i.e. Churchill) can do no wrong and a villain (i.e. Meghan) can do no right. I don't really see the fascination in people like that. Go on about free speech, but woe betide anyone who disagree with them.

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2021 22:04

You are hilarious. Unintentionally.

Iamthewombat · 19/03/2021 22:08

Don’t be silly.

Anyone who doesn’t exist in your echo chamber is a fan of hate speech, are they?

TedMullins · 19/03/2021 22:34

OP YADNBU, “shit funnel” is brilliant and I’ll be using that, and everything you’ve said is absolutely how I feel. Funny how the freedom of speech mob being censored are usually white middle class men with columns in the spectator isn’t it? And that those in agreement with them don’t actually want people who don’t agree to express their opposing opinions. You could almost call it... an echo chamber!

It sounds like you could all do more to call out the Piers lover and support your Black friend if these issues are long running (judging by the comment about leaving parties). But you absolutely did the right thing.

PM is a knob
And people must be allowed to have different opinions

Strangekindofwoman · 19/03/2021 22:52

My opinion is that PM is a cunt. A racist cunt and anyone who agrees with him doesn't know the difference between free speech and hate speak.

No wonder the internet is full of trolls when people mistake free speech for hate speak.

JaneJeffer · 19/03/2021 23:24

What about women no longer being allowed to describe themselves as such?

User133847 · 20/03/2021 07:56

PM is a knob And people must be allowed to have different opinions
Unless they disagree with Piers.
enigma16 · 20/03/2021 08:50

If you disagree with PM or his fangirls and -boys they flounce off or resort to playground taunts. Few seem to be able to engage in actual conversation about anything.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 20/03/2021 09:13

@Iamthewombat

Spouts nothing but hate and rubbish.

Nothing but? Are you sure? I get that you don’t like him but to claim that every word that somebody speaks is ‘hate and rubbish’ tends to undermine your position. You’d do better to acknowledge that you don’t like the position he takes on most issues. Then you would sound more credible and reasonable, because that would be a credible and reasonable view. Others may disagree, of course.

Nicely reasoned post.
Iamthewombat · 20/03/2021 09:13

Oh, the irony.

That was in response to this.

User133847 · 20/03/2021 10:49

Oh, the irony.

The irony is Piers Morgan has become the people's champion of free speech.

Maxnon · 20/03/2021 10:54

Why is Piers Morgan, the self-proclaimed Champion of Free Speech, not talking about the restrictions to right to protest? Or any of the other bills going through to curtail our democracy and freedom?

Where is our Hero?

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 20/03/2021 10:58

Hmm. Disparaging a group of people based on sex and race. That's bigotry.
TedMullins · 20/03/2021 11:08

Not someone saying middle class white men, one of the least oppressed demographics in the nation, are victims of “bigotry”, is it? Come back with some examples of systemic bigotry against that demographic that genuinely subjugates them then we’ll talk.

tangerinelollipop · 20/03/2021 11:33

We are in a pandemic. Activism, uncontrolled large gatherings that often result in agitation or violence towards people and property puts everyone at risk.
