I'm on a group whatsapp chat with some friends. Mixed group, mostly white, one Asian, one black girl, 3 gay. I'm female, white, straight. Group is just mates talking nonesense, sharing memes etc.

White male posts a petition to reinstate Piers Morgan at GMB. Follows it up with 'I love Piers Morgan, he speaks for lots of people.'

I found this in poor taste and said so, cue a big kerfuffle, mostly denying that there was anything untoward about it. Black girl leaves the group. When contacted to ask why she left, she says she 'has a lot on and the group was a distraction' which they accept.

For context, he has form for stirring the pot, the party line is to condone, that's just x, we all know what he's like.

Was I being unreasonable to take issue?

YANBU - I would have and have done the same as you. You are not required to stay silent on things that compromise your belief system and well done for calling it out.

Agree with you 100% about Piers Morgan. How he managed to get a job on prime time TV after the phone hacking is beyond me - he is absolutely vile

HavenKimmel · 17/03/2021 18:34

The reason that there are comments here about people being 'thick as pigshit', is that hateful, divisive commentary has pretty dire consequences when amplified to the extent that it shapes public perception. When someone demonstrates that they either do not know, or do not care, about the ramifications of using a vast public platform to denigrate people, one does wonder whether all synapses are firing, or whether you're dealing with a sociopath.

Flowers24 · 17/03/2021 18:37

I really like him but that's my view and id respect others if they didnt

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 17/03/2021 18:50

Yes. YWereBU.

Zevia · 17/03/2021 19:00

He should profoundly stupid. Piers morgan flounced - he wasnt fired. What's to reinstate?

Zevia · 17/03/2021 20:05

Should = sounds...

sst1234 · 18/03/2021 10:56

OP, your thinking is basically that people who agree with Piers Morgan are bigoted. People with this stance often consider themselves to be progressive, which is ironic as they are not progressive enough to let anyone else have a differing opinion without insulting them and calling them a bigot. You really need to expand your horizon and not label people because they disagree with your stance.
It’s always surprising that people have not learnt anything from outcome of western electoral choices in the last 5 years. Keep calling people bigots and they will show you their frustrations at the ballot box. Keep lecturing them about your progressiveness and let them talk back.

HavenKimmel · 18/03/2021 12:50

The point has gone overhead at 1000ft. It seems you've bought into the petulant narrative that any call for the media to behave with a modicum of respect, integrity, fairness, impartiality, or consideration for the casualties of outrage punditry, must be met with cries of oppression. We're talking about a man involved with phone hacking and faking images of soldiers urinating on civilians. Is it really asking too much to expect a bit better than this?

When I said 'bigoted old windbags' I was applying that directly to the likes of Piers.

bigot
[ˈbɪɡət]
NOUN
a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

Piers Morgan summed up to a T.

Yes it has because you asked a question about your friend but you seem to want a thread bashing Piers Morgan. I'm no fan of his but I'm not going to cancel anyone who is.

greycloudysky · 18/03/2021 13:42

I have mixed views on PM. I have never watched him on breakfast tv and thought he was abhorrent until he began speaking about TWAW and the clash with women's rights. He's been a huge advocate for women's rights. Conversely, I find his obsession with MM creepy. I liked the way he pressed politicians on their policies, particularly over COVID. At one time, it felt as though he was the only person holding the government to account.

Having said that, I've only got those views from clips and his Twitter account, so if he's a vile misogynist when he's not fighting for women's rights, I haven't seen that.

OP I find it odd that he's a friend one day and you want to ostracize him for liking PM the next. You don't sound like much of a friend because surely friends can talk about these things and discuss how they feel. PM seems quite divisive but I've noticed that a lot of SJW, tend to act on knee jerk reactions, rather than an in depth analysis. For example, there are many women who support trans rights without fully understanding the impact of those rights on them and other women. I don't want to derail the thread with Trans rights, it's just an example of what I've noticed.

RolloTomassi · 18/03/2021 13:45

@tangerinelollipop

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

No one should have to lose their jobs or be ostracised by society for thinking differently to the 'approved' narrative

This. People need to get over themselves. (Not even a PM fan!)

OhWhyNot · 18/03/2021 14:19

I know quite a few people who love Piers Morgan and no doubt we shall start hearinf Piers for PM soon. He is the Jeremy Clarkson of 2021 who many people also felt spoke the truth

The media is awash with older miserable men who are combative some channel it others just rant and bully just listen to LBC

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 18/03/2021 14:45

No, OP. Your point was very clear: only those who agree with you are allowed to have an opinion.

Justcallmebebes · 18/03/2021 14:59

I agree as above. I think OP expected to post her thread and everybody agree with her that Morgan is a terrible misogynistic, bullying racist. I don't like the man but i will stand up for free speech. "I may not agree with what you've said but will defend to the death your right to say it" (Voltaire or biographer).

I said yesterday when I commented that tens of thousands have signed petition supporting Piers. It is now hundreds of thousands so thank God we are in the majority. A quarter of that number have complained about him

Strangekindofwoman · 18/03/2021 15:09

I'd think anyone who liked PM and started a petition to get the dickhead reinstated was a bit of a twat and I certainly wouldn't want to be in a Whatsapp group with them.

The evidence is staring people in the face, too. Gordon Brown calling a woman who tried to discuss immigration a bigot didn't help his electoral performance. Trying to shut up anyone who holds views you don't approve of never ends well.

100 million % THIS.

So well put!

This. And as I have said before, it's ALWAYS the ranty liberal-left and 'woke' who do this. I never hear people who are right of centre, Conservative, or even centrist, trying to tell people with left wing views that they are WRONG.^

Yet the liberal-left always insist anyone who disagrees with them are all thick, racist, bigoted gammon, whose opinions are WRONG! These 'woke' liberal-left types are the most dim, intolerant, bigoted, narrow-minded people I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. Truly nasty, repugnant individuals, and I rarely engage with them anymore.

And when anyone points this out, the person the comment is aimed at insists they are not 'woke' and not liberal-left... Yeah, SURE you're not! Wink

Yep I think this too. Although she would never admit it, @HavenKimmel is furious, but also shocked that most people disagree with her about Piers Morgan.

I said yesterday when I commented that tens of thousands have signed petition supporting Piers. It is now hundreds of thousands so thank God we are in the majority. A quarter of that number have complained about him.

I haven't seen that petition. I will go look for it, because I'd like to sign it. Smile

This ^
Piers Morgan is the result not the cause. Depressingly the backlash will only get worse because people hate not being heard and self described progressives cannot tolerate debate or difference of opinion, look at the names used to describe him and anyone who agrees with him on anything, there is no attempt to engage in a respectful way. Its interesting the OP has given the definition of bigotry.......... I don't think you'll be needing a size adjustment for your head wear.

It's quite ironic that so many posters here have determined a member of the group left because she didn't like someone else's point of view. Assuming you know someone's political views on the basis of their skin colour isn't racist at all!

FWIW I can't bear watching him, he doesn't know when to pipe down and let others speak.

Iamthewombat · 18/03/2021 16:07

The point has gone overhead at 1000ft.

That’s right, OP. Anyone who does not empathise with your decision to cancel your friend because he likes Piers Morgan is simply too thick to understand.

It seems you've bought into the petulant narrative

Flouncing from a WhatsApp group, and binning off a friend, because they like something that you don’t, is the very definition of petulant, I’d say. As is insulting posters who aren’t on the same team as you.

I’ve asked you twice to show us your evidence base for asserting the following:

  1. Piers Morgan regularly punches down (at ordinary people)
  1. Piers Morgan is a misogynist.

You haven’t come up with anything other than his involvement with phone hacking, which is not in itself evidence of either of those things.

I don’t have any strong feelings about Piers Morgan but I think that it is healthy to have a few contrarians around. The thought of pubic figures being censured and censored for departing from the narrative du jour, set by intolerant people, is chilling.

enigma16 · 18/03/2021 16:10

Hi littlepattilou

Do you know what 'woke' actually means? "Being alert to injustice in society, especially racism." Are you saying you don't care about injustice and racism?

Time to rethink your values.

Piers Morgan
enigma16 · 18/03/2021 16:16

No, I'm sorry but I can't. Maybe I got lost in her rant against the "dim, intolerant, bigoted, narrow-minded people and "Truly nasty, repugnant individuals".

Please enlighten me.
