Neighbour throwing cat poo into my garden

anticatwoman · 16/03/2021 11:41

I think my cat hating neighbour has thrown bagged cat poo into my back garden. It would be cat poo from my cats who like to shit in her lovely lovely garden.

I have two children under three and we were playing in the garden this morning when I spotted the bag (looked like a fragranced sanitary bag) in the top corner of our garden filled with what is most definitely cat turds - although I couldn't confirm if they are from my cats of course.

We've lived here 3 years. Had cats for two. She's a proud gardener and my entitled cats love to shit in her vegetable patch and play on her lawn. I've seen her chasing them off/ throwing water at them, putting chicken wire and spikes on the fence to try and stop them getting over. They enjoy the challenge. If I see them in her garden I try to entice them back to mine with treats. As long as she isn't hurting them I don't mind her chasing them off. Not everyone loves cats and that's fine. It's complicated by the fact the old lady next door again loves my cats and frequently lets them in and spoils them. So our shared neighbour's garden is a passage way to tastier cat food and non stop affection.

My back fence is very tall and has no back access. It backs on to a main-ish road. After my back fence is a little stone wall about a metre tall which is filled with prickly blackberry bushes, then the path, then the road. My point being here is that if a dog walker was going to dump a bag of poo from the main road they could easily toss it into the blackberry bushes and not be noticed rather than throwing it miles over my fence to land in my garden. My other next door neighbour has a scary dog so my cats don't dare visit that garden.

I can't prove it's her but the fact that it's cat poo and where it's landed makes it quite probable. I have an indoor and outdoor litter tray but cannot control where they roam.

Whilst I sympathise it's annoying for her, I'm not breaking any law whereas I think she is by throwing things into my garden? If she's going to the trouble of bagging it why not just bin it instead of acting out of spite?

What should I do? Clear it up and forget it? Wait to see if more shows up? Loudly proclaim in the garden that I'm checking cctv for the culprit? Ask her directly? I've clearly and calmly explained to my cats not do do it anymore and am hopeful the message has got through.

Make sure your cats poo in your own garden.

BlackCatShadow · 16/03/2021 11:44

Oh, dear. This thread is not going to go the way you think.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/03/2021 11:46

We have two cats and I think you are being very unreasonable. Our cats trued going into our neighbours garden - they are very proud of their garden and didn't want them there so I showed them how to spray the cats with water and that did the trick.

WinterRobin · 16/03/2021 11:47

If you know your cats are pooing in her garden, the nice thing to do would be to offer to go round and pick it up. Cat poo is horrible. At least she bagged it up.

Hercules12 · 16/03/2021 11:47

What's your neighbour done wrong?

Haydugi · 16/03/2021 11:48

Apologise for the fact your cats are causing her a nuisance? Offer to buy a sonic deterrent? Offer to come in and clear up the shit yourself?

Moondust001 · 16/03/2021 11:48

Which law do you think she's breaking? I believe she is simply returning your property.

Seriously, I have nothing against cats (but have a dog myself) and I understand that unlike dogs there isn't a method of following them around to pick up their poo. But if you know that your cats are doing their business in her garden, but object to it being "returned" then you are being massively unreasonable. If you don't want cat poo in your garden, then don't keep cats.

Servalan · 16/03/2021 11:48

I think apologising to your neighbour might be a start - and try and have a respectful, non-accusatory conversation with her about how to deal with her needing to constantly pick up after your cat and what you can do to improve the situation/help.

Thehawki · 16/03/2021 11:49

Why don’t you have a word with her and ask if the cats are bothering her? Don’t mention the poo! Try to come up with a solution, one of those anti cat noise things you could buy for her? At least let her know you’re trying, tell her if she sees them she can spray (not with a jet though lol) them or shoo them away as well.

PlanetPuddle · 16/03/2021 11:49

Offer to go round once a week and clean up the cat poo for her?

DogsSausages · 16/03/2021 11:50

Cat proof your garden. Go and pick up their poo. Apologise. Is this thread real.

SemperIdem · 16/03/2021 11:50

🤨

Is this a reverse?

minipie · 16/03/2021 11:50

Honestly I’d be grateful she threw it back bagged rather than unbagged. Much easier for you to bin.

I have a cat

NuclearDH · 16/03/2021 11:51

I think it’s fair enough and I say that as a cat owner.

onlythewildones · 16/03/2021 11:51

I don’t think you should mention the bags to her. However I do think as cat owners we have a responsibility to try to help our neighbours with any problems our cats cause!

I used to have a next door neighbour who (absolutely fair enough!) complained to me about my cat pooing in her garden. I offered to go round daily and pick it up (her garden could be accessed from the street) which she declined, I also offered to buy her cat aggravating alarm type things which she similarly declined. In the end she came up with her own deterrent which was putting tea tree oil on tea bags and leaving them around the beds. But we always had a good relationship and I think she really appreciated me trying to help her with the problem. We choose to let our cats outdoors, so...

idontlikealdi · 16/03/2021 11:51

Good on her.

onlythewildones · 16/03/2021 11:52

Cross posted with loads of others!

Potterythrowdown · 16/03/2021 11:52

Stop your cats shitting in her garden?

gingerscot · 16/03/2021 11:53

Are you actually kidding? You’re complaining that you’re inconvenienced and disgusted by her throwing cat poo into your garden. Poo that came from THE CATS YOU CHOSE TO HAVE. That’s she’s having to deal with? Really? FFS. Keep your cats in your house and then no one will have an issue with cat poo in their garden. It’s rank.

requitalissima · 16/03/2021 11:53

You should thank your neighbour for bagging up your cat-shit and buy them a supply of bags for this very purpose.
And apologise for the fucking inconvenience your cat is causing to them.
Profusely.
A case of wine a month would be a nice touch as well
Hmm

scochran · 16/03/2021 11:54

My neighbours are keen gardeners so I've put inward angled fence top round my garden to keep my 2 in. Made it from brackets and chicken wire. Not expensive. We are on busy road as well and don't want them causing accidents with their poor road sense.

mummymeister · 16/03/2021 11:54

So, would you be happy if she had two dogs that she regularly let shit in your garden that you then had to clear up before your little ones went out to play? thought not. i just dont get the different ways that we treat dog and cat owners. Its like cat owners sort of just shrug their shoulders and take no responsibility for where their cats go. they dont care if they dig up their neighbours gardens or shit everywhere. These are your pets. You know they are shitting in next doors garden. go round and offer to clear it up or get rid of the cats if you dont want to be responsible for them. You need to make an effort to stop your pets doing this. You should be glad Im not your neighbour. not only would I have bagged it and thrown it back but next time it would be unbagged on your doorstep so you could step in.

Jijithecat · 16/03/2021 11:54

If your neighbour did do that it's quite passive aggressive.
Maybe ask her if she's noticed any items being thrown into her garden (in a non-confrontational way) and take it from there. If she says it was her then you can offer to go round and clear it up once a week.

FAQs · 16/03/2021 11:54

I’d pop by with some chocolates as an apology and offer to clear it up as and when needed.

changi · 16/03/2021 11:55

Oh, dear. This thread is not going to go the way you think.

On the contrary. This thread is going to go exactly the way the OP intended.
