Would you employ this person?

Negatives:
The job is pretty physical and the applicant is obese.
The applicant also does have experience but it's from 10 years ago.

Positives:
The applicant is very enthusiastic about the job and building a career in this job and has proven record of steady employment.

In general, when hiring I am looking for enthusiasm and commitment and integrity. How fit you are doesn't ever come into it.

That said, if you weren't actually capable of doing the job it wouldn't really work, would it?

I would go for it and apply, OP. See how it goes.

BertramLacey · 15/03/2021 13:49

If I were you I'd apply for it OP. Just be aware that the job market is very, very tough at the moment. There may well be several people ahead of you in the queue, with current experience and a good track record. Enthusiasm won't count for much unless it's demonstrable e.g. has taken the form of volunteering in a relevant role because you want to get back into the field. Anyway can look enthusiastic at interview, it doesn't necessarily translate into ability to do the job.

hereyehearye · 15/03/2021 13:55

Agree this is all useless unless you clarify (1) how physical and (2) how obese.

30 stone and a job at an amazon factory - no
Light lifting and 16 stone - obviously not even relevant.

LIZS · 15/03/2021 13:56

Most interviews are on zoom etc now , so less opportunity to judge you physically.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/03/2021 13:59

I’d assume if the person had applied for the job and had experience in it then they could judge their own physical capabilities.

Sadly, that's really not the case in all applications. We had stairs in our place. There was no other option. We even put it in the ad after 1 person commented "I didn't know stairs are involved", which was fair enough. We still had people doing "Oh, I have bad knee/bad foot/other alignments so I can't really do stairs up and down all shift". A lot of people!

notdaddycool · 15/03/2021 13:59

If they are the best applicant then employ them, if they aren't up to it then they won't pass probation and you can get rid. If it's really physical they may lose weight quite quickly.

iklboo · 15/03/2021 13:59

Welcome to MN, OP. Did you put no fatties in the job advert?

OP is the candidate.

Nenevalleykayaker · 15/03/2021 14:14

I wouldn’t want to work for an employer whose recruitment officer asks Mumsnet (of all places! ) their opinion on whether being fat means they can do the job.

Lucky then it's the candidate asking, not the hiring manager.

In this case, OP is wondering if she should apply!

MinnieJackson · 15/03/2021 18:25

I think they should get a chance for sure!

nitsandwormsdodger · 15/03/2021 18:51
